Patti and colleagues did a scorching version of "Beneath the Southern
Cross"; the show was worth that alone. I overheard several others
commenting on it after the show. And I could practically taste "Pissing in
a River." Lenny and bass guitarist were superior, while Oliver seemed to
struggle but kept the pace. Jay Dee was commanding. Patti's voice was
gloriously hard and true. I hope she can sustain this for the duration of
the tour. All in all, the band was the tightest I have ever seen them and,
in the rock n' roll arena, possibly the tightest band I have ever seen.
sidenotes:
The American flag used as the backdrop contained only 42 stars (???!)
When Patti said "I know any number of people here who will kick your ass"
she was talking to the kid who interrupted a silent break with "call off
security" as he was promptly hauled off by said security to which he loudly
responded "this is bullshit." i.e., Patti responded to this last outburst
which was *not* directed at her.
The audience was more polite than I've ever encountered in Los Angeles. The
entire crowd seemed reverent and wanted to catch every word from Patti.
Patti recited the entire version of Piss Factory with extraordinary feeling
and a couple of good throaty hawkers aimed to her side on the stage.
Babelista Melinda, who I met at the show, has a friend who retrieved the set
list from the stage after the show. Melinda, you are the first person from
a computer group that I have met in the flesh! I'm glad we talked.
And to Gypsy, from Venice, it was most extraordinary to see you after these
few years, especially to congratulate each other on our clean time! Gypsy,
I know you're out here somewhere!
