I'm going against my inclination of the past few months to not make
political posts, so here goes. I think Anthony R (and Dlofdahl as well)
makes some very good points, like that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is
one of the most important (Anthony says the single most) conflict since
WWII. But there was another thing that Anthony said that caught my
attention:
>Also, ABC New Nightline did a report last night that basically made the
point that
>if the Israelis and Americans will not negotiate peace until the suicide
bombings
>stop, then they will _never_ negotiate, if all it takes is one or two
suicide
>bombers to derail a peace process meant for millions of Palestinians and
Israelis.
I think this is the main reason Sharon's belief in a military solution will
fail. Under current conditions in Israel and the West Bank there are always
going to be enough people pissed off enough to become suicide bombers.
Israel will never be able to kill them all. That's why I think,
ultimately, the only solution is the creation of a Palestinian state
somewhere along the lines of the 1967 boundaries. It will take a lot of
guts on the part of Bush Administration to push this through. And frankly,
I'm not sure Bush has the courage or the vision. But I pray that he does.
Climbing back into my bunker :)
