legendary rock music photographer MICK ROCK
talk, slide show & book signing
Monday, November 21, 2005 at 7 pm
--- Mick Rock has become as important in defining the images of punks
and glam rockers as his subjects were in making music history. Join us
for a very special evening with the legendary rock music photographer
as we celebrate the publication of "Raw Power: Iggy and the Stooges"
and "Moonage Daydream: The Life & Times of Ziggy Stardust."

images in rock music history - including those of David Bowie's Ziggy
Stardust period. Rock also shot album covers for Syd Barrett, Lou
Reed, Queen, The
Ramones and Joan Jett. He was also the chief photographer on the films
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," and
produced and directed Bowie's early music videos.

A complete recording of of the FM broadcast on WBCN of the Patti Smith
Group concert at the Jazz Workshop, Boston MA, 9 January 1976 is now
being torrented at Dime-a-Dozen.

http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=66792

This definately one to pick up. If you already have the 'short'
version that has circulated for several years, you will still want to
get this 'complete' version.

Setlist: We're Gonna Have a Real Good Time Together, Privilege (Set Me
Free), Georges Franju/Ain't it Strange, Kimberly, Redondo Beach, Free
Money, Pale Blue Eyes/Louie Louie, Pumping (My Heart), Child of
Paradise, Birdland, Mafia, Land, Time Is on My Side, Gloria, My
Generation

Apparently Neil Young is on Late Night with Conan O'Brien each night
this week. But Patti is on next week, Wednesday, 9 November 2005. I
suppose she'll sing a song from Horses.

Kind regards

AUGERIES OF INNOCENE REVIEWED

Ecco Press, New York. Hardcover. 80 pp

To see a world in a grain of sand

And a heaven in a wild flower,

Hold infinity in the palm of your hand

And eternity in an hour.

William Blake

Patti Smith's latest book is a masterful culmination of all her poetic work to date, drawing as it does on her long and varied influences, including Arthur Rimbaud, Joan of Arc, Pablo Picasso, Virginia Woolf and of course, William Blake, whose famed poem Auguries of Innocence, has been borrowed as the title of this superb collection. It is Blake, the visionary British artist whose influence is most pronounced on the 26 poems included here, but especially on "Worthy the Lamb Slain for Us," which directly addresses Blake's poem "The Lamb." Here, Ms. Smith gives Blake's innocence an edge of modern day horror, relating it to modern man's cruelty, as demonstrated by this passage: "And he, a governed soul, broad shouldered with eyes like Blake, lamented who bred thee, nursed thee on mead and flowers, as he ripped her apart."

Obviously, for readers expecting a kinder gentler Patti Smith, it's best to be forewarned, as this book, despite its title, is no collection of innocent auguries or vapid verses. Indeed, Smith gives us a vision of atrocities and horror which might give even the most seasoned reader a reason to stand up and shout against the fear and madness that seem to have descended on today's world like a biblical plague of locusts. Smith addresses global injustices, animal extinction, death, sorrow and loss, and does it all with the voice of a true seer. As Blake did, Smith contrasts the inherent innocence of children against the unholy terrors of their exploitation, whether as in Blake's time, by taking children and turning them into mistreated laborers, or as is done today, by stripping away their innocence away through various forms of mass media, an even more insidious method, since it can happen so subtly, a child or parent may never even notice it occurring.

Several of the poems are vivid and horrific reminders of what the so-called civilized leaders of this planet have done in the name of peace and progress during the last century. Namely, bombing innocent men, women and children who have no connection to the political agenda's or visions of grandeur espoused by their misguided leaders. Three separate poems address specific bombings, including George Bush's bombing of Baghdad, Iraq, Ronald Reagan's bombing of Benghazi, Libya and Adolph Hitler's bombing of Guernica, Spain. And ironically, Smith is able to transmute the horrors of modern warfare into a truly touching and beautiful artistic vision, as in the lengthy poem, "Birds of Iraq" where Patti speaks about the supposed sanity of America's launching a preemptive strike on Iraq, by contrasting it with the madness and hallucinations of Virginia Woolf, whose loss of control over her own life, ultimately resulted in her tragic suicide. Likewise Pablo Picasso's outrage over the bombing of
the Basque village of Guernica resulted in that artist's masterpiece, and Ms. Smith imagines the horrors of the that fateful Spanish day in 1937 without flinching: "...She crawled with one shoe the other foot gone a trail sticky and warm... dripping blood from the wounds of Spain."

In short Auguries Of Innocence is a not to be missed experience, an exquisite gift for poetry lovers everywhere.

If anyone has knowledge of or has an extra ticket for the show at the Troubador,
I'm looking for one more.

Last minute OK...tho' I doubt you would have trouble selling it at the door on the night of....

Subject: Patti Smith to Appear at Tower Records in NYC on November 8

Patti Smith will appear at the downtown NYC Tower Records at 4th and Broadway
on Tuesday, November 8, at 7 p.m., to commemorate the release of
Horses/Horses.

Arrive early--space is limited. This exclusive event with Patti Smith, Lenny
Kaye, Jay Dee Daugherty and Tony Shanahan will include a Q&A, spoken word and
some acoustic songs. Following the performance, Patti Smith and the band will
be signing copies of Horses/Horses, the 2-CD 30th anniversary edition of the
classic Horses album. Each purchase will also include a free, limited edition
Horses/Horses poster.

November 2005 marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Patti Smith's debut
album, Horses, a groundbreaking rock & roll masterpiece which continues its
unparalleled influence on rock music, style and culture.
Arista/Columbia/Legacy Recordings will celebrate this musical milestone with
the release of Horses/Horses, a two-disc Legacy Special Edition of Patti
Smith's debut album, on Tuesday, November 8.

Disc One of Horses/Horses features the original album, in its entirety, along
with the bonus track, Patti's interpretation of the Who's classic "My
Generation." Initially released as the B-side to "Gloria," the first single
from Horses, in 1975, "My Generation" features John Cale, the album's
producer, on bass. The Legacy Special Edition of Horses has been remastered
by Greg Calbi producing superior sound to previous editions of the album.

The second disc of Horses/Horses showcases Patti Smith and her Band--Lenny
Kaye (guitar), Jay Dee Daugherty (drums), Tony Shanahan (bass), Tom Verlaine
(guitar) and featuring Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers--performing the
complete Horses album live, with a "My Generation" encore, at the Royal
Festival Hall in London on June 25, 2005. This historic performance of Horses
was the culminating concert at the 2005 Meltdown Festival, which was curated
by Patti Smith.
(Lenny Kaye and Jay Dee Daugherty were both members of the ensemble that
played on the original Horses while Tom Verlaine was a guest artist on the
1975 album).

Horses/Horses comes packaged with a deluxe booklet featuring rare archival
photographs, ephemera, lyrics and documentation of the 2005 concert as well as
Paul Williams' provocative essay on "Gloria."

is there a listing of live Patti material which has been officially
released?

(I'm planning to seed some live Patti shows on Dimeadozen, so I'll need
to remove tracks which were officially released, everything even if OOP
(which I think includes promos).)

thanks in advance!

Drug-sniffing dog dies in California after cocaine encounter

      ASSOCIATED PRESS

      9:48 p.m. November 4, 2005

REDONDO BEACH b Basko took a bite out of crime b but it cost him his
life.

The 5-year-old drug-sniffing German shepherd died Friday after he bit
into a bag of cocaine during an annual certification search in Riverside
County, according to Sgt. Jim Banach with the Redondo Beach Police Department.

Basko had successfully completed the search and was in his partner's car
for the ride home when he had a seizure. The partner, Officer Ken Greenleaf,
rushed Basko to a nearby animal clinic, where the dog died before he could be
treated, Banach said.

Basko had been with the Police Department for four years, helping to
apprehend suspects, including one wanted for murder, and assisting in the
recovery of narcotics.

      A memorial service was pending.

      =======================================================

      BAD Basko!!!

I ask you---Does any happiness ever come from REDONDO BEACH?

      Redondo Beach - Patti Smith

      Late afternoon, dreaming hotel
We just had the quarrel that sent you away.
I was looking for you, are you gone gone ?
Called you on the phone, another dimension.
Well, you never returned, oh you know what I mean.
I went looking for you, are you gone, gone ?
Down by the ocean it was so dismal,
Women all standing with a shock on their faces.
Sad description, oh I was looking for you.

Everyone was singing, girl is washed up
On Redondo Beach and everyone is so sad.
I was looking for you, are you gone gone ?
      Pretty little girl, everyone cried.
She was the victim of sweet suicide.
I went looking for you, are you gone gone ?

Down by the ocean it was so dismal,
Women all standing with shock on their faces.
Sad description, oh I was looking for you.

Desk clerk told me girl was washed up,
Was small, an angel with apple blonde hair, now.
I went looking for you, are you gone gone ?
Picked up my key, didn't reply.
Went to my room, started to cry.
You were small, an angel, are you gone gone ?

Down by the ocean it was so dismal.
I was just standing with shock on my face.
The hearse pulled away, and the girl that had died, it was you.
You'll never return into my arms 'cause you were gone gone.
Never return into my arms 'cause you were gone gone.
      Gone gone, gone gone, good-bye.

Dear N.Y. friends,

Patti Smith will appear at the downtown NYC Tower
Records at 4th and Broadway on Tuesday, November 8, at
7 p.m., to commemorate the release of Horses/Horses.

Following the performance, Patti Smith and the band
will be signing copies of Horses/Horses, the 2-CD 30th
anniversary edition of the classic Horses album. Each
purchase will also include a free, limited edition
Horses/Horses poster.

Is there someone who can buy for me a signed copy and
send it to me in Italy ??
Obviously i will pay all the costs !

I will be eternally grateful !

Please write to me off list.

Many thanks
peace
Paolo

I think this is really outrageous, and was thinking about what
I could do about it. I wrote letters to Symantec and Sophos,
which are two of the companies that have anti-virus software,
asking them if they will make their programs protect PCs against
this Sony virus. Lots of people have those virus-protection
programs on their PCs, so maybe getting protection that way is
the best we can do.

Bought Horses/Horses today (a Sony/BMG release),
and disc 2 at least (live "Horses" all the way
through, with Lenny, JD, Tony Shanahan, Flea and
Tom Verlaine) is a straight-ahead, by the book,
audio CD, logo and all. No DRM, no funny stuff.

Tragically, it's not in Gracenote's CDDB yet, so
until someone successfully submits the song titles,
you'll have to type in your own titles when you
rip it for your iPod.

I thought the list would already be buzzing with folk listening to the
new album. Perhaps the time difference has given us Europeans an
advantage today.

First impressions are that the packaging looks great, nothing tawdry
or irritating. I might quibble with some details - the original
sleeve notes are included, but not Patti's signature - Land: gets a
colon, but Gloria doesn't - the reprise of Gloria on disc two isn't
mentioned - the track lists on the cover, the discs and the booklet
don't match - the recording date of the 1976 My Generation is missed
off. Still looks good though.

My ears aren't sharp enough to say how the sound of this remaster
differs from the LP and the two previous versions. I'll believe it if
they tell me it's better. The live disc sounds great - missing some
chatter and so on, but a great performance and completely real. If I
listen carefully I should be able to hear myself there at the Festival
Hall, clapping in a reserved English way, and smiling for all I'm
worth.

Okay, you've already got a copy of Horses - maybe two. Do you need
another one? You most certainly do!

Kind regards

Andrew

I've been on the list for a while but never posted anything as I'm mostly a
reader, but wanted to comment on the following:

First off, I just got Horses/Horses, had to go to two stores to find it. My
local Best Buy had 3 copies but they had sold out (or they didn't know where
they put them, which is the case more often than not). As much as I don't
like Best Buy due to them contributing to the destruction of nice little
music stores around the area, it is close to my home and it is convenient.
I ended up getting it from a local store (which felt much better to buy it
from them, though it is a longer drive), for a dollar less than Best Buy
even.

Well, the CD is very nice, I really liked the packaging and it was worth
buying it, even though I already have two other copies of Horses. I really
liked what they did with the pictures from then and now. I haven't ripped
it to my ipod yet but I will later on tonight.

I bought 3 CDs today, Horses, Kate Bush Aerial (her new one) and Eurythmics
Ultimate Collection. I examined them at the store before paying for them
and examined the latest Santana CD (which I know for sure has that copy
protection/root kit/DRM thing). The CDs I bought didn't have that label
that states that it runs on Windows etc. etc. so I went ahead and purchased
them even thought they were Sony in one way or another. This brings me to
this posting. I've been reading a lot about this issue and as much as I
want to boycott Sony, it seems to me they have their hands on just about
every CD out there. I'm thinking for sure they are going to expand
eventually and put that root kit thing in more and more CDs. While I think
something should be done about pirating, this really makes it a pain to
manage my music. I personally like to make a copy of the songs, being
either a compilation CD or just a copy of the CD and archive my original so
that it will stay nice for many years, though lately I've been just ripping
them to my Ipod, ever since I got an Ipod.. I know for a fact that car CD
players and CD changers plus all the taking out and putting back in of a CD
can be hard on discs, plus there's the question of if the car gets broken
into, the thieves won't get away with the originals.

I've been thinking a while about this DRM situation and I'm hoping that we
as consumers can do something about it. I believe the whole statement about
music companies losing money is false, I know that people who love the
music, the fans will buy the CDs by a certain artist they love even if they
have it already, like Horses for example, just because it includes a better
packaging, a cleaner mix, extra tracks or whatever. I think the DRM is a
sham from the big record companies to have even more control over us ( the
consumer) than they already do. We need to stop them, though this probably
will be very difficult as, like I said before, increasingly it seems there's
only one or two companies running the show even though they use different
labels. I foresee myself not buying any more CDs no matter who the artist
is if this situation doesn't get solved. I don't want to in 5, 10 or 15
years to be reminiscing about the "good ole" days when CDs were not copy
protected. I do own about 5500 CDs and I'm a collector, but I can see
myself completely stopping my CD buying if I'm going to be restricted in any
way on how I can listen to my CDs. We the consumers and the artists need to
stop them!!!

Hope this makes sense and sorry if it was long, hope some of you got through
it.

It's nice that the live Horses is coming out on election day here in the USA, as during MY GENERATION Patti pointedly asks how her Generation could have given us George W. Bush.

Columbia is really doing Patti justice, issuing her second live album, (after the French double disc of Trampin' on CD). Just consider, after spending nearly 30 years at Arista, Patti never really had a live album on that label, althought the fact that Arista/BMG was brought by Sony is what makes this new Horses edition even possible. As Andrew notes, the deluxe packaging is really a treat, especially after the very simple sleeve that Arista provided for the original Horses Lp. Here we get to see many more Mapplethorpe shots of Patti, and a nice shot of Patti with John Cale taken at Electric Lady studios by RM. It's also nice to finally have the lyrics to all the songs along with the album, even if it took 30 years!

As for Patti's live performance and the recording of it -- both are absolutely staggering. As Andrew points out, the live song titles are not completely accurate though, as they leave out any mention of Patti's spoken intro to Break it up, as well as her reprise of Gloria at the end of Horses. Most of Patti's between song chatter has also been removed, but thankfully they have at least left in Patti's saying "side two" before KIMBERLEY.

ELEGIE also benefits greatly on the live disc, with the addition of a trumpet solo by Flea that closes the song as Patti recites a list of friends who are no longer with us today...

Now, I wonder if Horses / Horses sells well enough, Columbia might be willing to give us anninversary editions of Radio Ethiopia, Easter and Wave over the next three years! Of course, that means Patti would have to do live shows showcasing all the songs on each of those albums. Not such a bad idea...

Here is a snippet from John Rockwell's original review of HORSES:

The Pop Life: Patti Smith's First Album Listens Well

By John Rockwell, The New York Times - November 7, 1975

Patti Smith's first album Horses, should be in the stores about now. It's an extraordinary disk, and every minute of it is worth repeated rehearings...

Miss Smiths visions arise out of normalcy but then transcend it almost instantly. Devotees of Miss Smith will want to know how honestly and accurately this record captures the feeling of her club performances and the answer ismarvelously! The balance between voice and band is perfect, and big basic sound is the tacky, ricky-tick rock that her quartet produces live. The songs are infused with discreet, subtle touches that enhance them, and the vocal overdubbing in Land is handled brilliantly. Horses may be an eccentricity, but in a way that anything new is eccentric. If you are responsive to its mystical energy, it will shake you and move you as little else can do!

Andrew F Wilson <andrewfwilson> wrote:I thought the list would already be buzzing with folk listening to the
new album. Perhaps the time difference has given us Europeans an
advantage today.

First impressions are that the packaging looks great, nothing tawdry
or irritating. I might quibble with some details - the original
sleeve notes are included, but not Patti's signature - Land: gets a
colon, but Gloria doesn't - the reprise of Gloria on disc two isn't
mentioned - the track lists on the cover, the discs and the booklet
don't match - the recording date of the 1976 My Generation is missed off.

Do you need another one? You most certainly do!

Kind regards

Andrew

I arrived there about 1hr 45 minutes before it was scheduled to start
after driving about 2 1/2 hours from Southern NJ & already there were
about 30 people in line. Went in, got my wristband & Copy of
Horses/Horses...Then it was waiting time. Was able to pass the time
with the woman standing behind me. Seems she was my age (42) & we
shared a lot of Patti stories & experiences. Made the time go faster.
At least it was VERY WARM for NY in November, that helped a bit.
Finally we were ushered inside the store. Patti, Lenny (acoustic
Guitar), Tony (Keyboards) & Jay Dee (Bass) performed 5 songs:

Redondo Beach
Kimberly
Wing
Free Money
Gloria

In between each song there was a few Q&A (some seemed quite silly &
Patti let us know). She reminised about Recording Horses @ Electric
Lady. She also took quite a few Black & White poloroid pictures of
the crowd. I later found out the camera was from 1963.

After the performance we were again forced to go outside & line up
for the signing. After about 90 minutes, I was FINALLY face to face
with someone I've admired for 30 years. I gave her a few pictures I
had taken when she first performed with her daughter Jesse in
Philadelphia a few years ago, she really seemed appreciative &
thanked me over & over. My brother (THANKS BILL), took a picture of
me & her I will cherish forever. Then she signed my Horses/Horses as
well as my copy of "Auguries of Innocence", then I was off to the
band to have them sign the CD. I also had Lenny sign my 45 cover
of "Child Bride", he seemed to enjoy showing it to Tony & JD. Then it
was another 2 1/2 hour drive back to the wastelands of South Jersey.

Sorry if this went on a bit long, but it was simply an AMAZING
EXPERIENCE for me, one I will never forget...OH YEAH, the live Horses
CD ROCKS, listened to it on the way home

Cheers,
Tom G

See, I can never keep straight what they mean on these
post-midnight show schedules. Why don't they just say
"Late night Wednesday" or "Late nuight Thursday"? That's
a heck of a lot clearer than the above...

See, I can never keep straight what they mean on these
post-midnight show schedules. Why don't they just say
"Late night Wednesday" or "Late nuight Thursday"? That's
a heck of a lot clearer than the above...

I've only got so much hard drive space on my Panasonic!!

Oh DAMN!! Cancelled? What, isn't Conan's hair dresser available?! Man.....I
still am going to watch just in case--one never knows, they may say something.
I can't call but I'm so glad YOU did, Seena--they wouldn't explain anything?
I wonder if its Patti or what? I mean....she IS in NYC right now isn't she?

Things that make ya go 'hmmmmmmmmmm', eh?

tonight's

showing a rerun. The NBC main number is: 212-664-4444, if you want to call.
Ask

Hi, all you fans out there!

Patti's birthday is on Dec 30 and - as you all know - she usually celebrates with fans and friends at the Bowery Ballroom, NYC. Everybody expects her to do it this year.

Now I live in Germany and don't have the opportunity to go to NYC - therefore I decided to celebrate with fans in my hometown.

It is a small town in Northern Germany between Hamburg and Luebeck, quite nice for a little vacation.

If you want to be invited, please send an email to:
patti-smith-birthday

Maybe you like to come over and join?

Looking forward to see you -

Birgit

Sony rootkit sparks legal onslaughtClass action lawsuit filed against company's antipiracy software that allegedly enables World of Warcraft cheating.
The tangled web woven by music giant Sony BMG is getting bigger by the minute.

The label is already facing a class action lawsuit in California over its use of copy-protection software on its CDs that hides itself when the CD is played on a Windows-based PC.

And now at least two other suits are on the way, one in New York and another in Italy. The legal and PR nightmare stems from Sony BMG's use of a particular type of digital rights management copy-protection software on at least 20 of its CDs. Those CDs include Trey Anastasio's Shine, Celine Dion's On ne Change Pas, Neil Diamond's 12 Songs, Amerie's Touch, Pete Seeger's The Essential Pete Seeger, and Ricky Martin's Life. Partial lists of CDs are at Slashdot and the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

The software in this case, designed to prevent a user from copying a CD more than twice, was created by First 4 Internet. It is called a "rootkit," and once a CD is loaded onto a computer, a watchdog program is installed, and then hides itself deep in the core of the operating system.

That's where the trouble begins, first uncovered by programmer and blogger Mark Russinovich. A side effect of the software is that it can be used to hide any files with a certain string of characters in the file name. Already reports have surfaced of World of Warcraft hackers using the program to make their cheats impossible for Blizzard's Warden anti-cheating program to detect.

The California suit, filed last week in Los Angeles Superior Court by a Southern California attorney on behalf of all California consumers "who purchased or acquired one of the rootkit-installed CDs," claims Sony BMG broke three state laws--the Consumer Legal Remedies Act, the Consumer Protection against Computer Spyware Act, and the California Unfair Competition law--according to the filing.

It asks the court to force Sony to stop selling any more CDs containing the rootkit and seeks compensation for damage already incurred by users. The suit centers on the matter of user notification and the rootkit's removal. The filing claims that the license agreement that pops up when a protected CD is loaded does not indicate the potential damage caused by the software.

The agreement says, "The software is intended to protect the audio files on this CD. It will reside on your computer until it is removed or deleted." It does not say that the software hides itself.

The California lawsuit also charges that the agreement does not say that the computer will be damaged--the CD player becomes inoperable--if the user tries to uninstall it.

Sony has since released a patch that makes its software visible again. Sony has also sent the rootkit-cloaking information to antivirus software companies so they know to look for it.

The company has also said it has abandoned the rootkit strategy, but not, of course, the use of other forms of DRM copy protection.

In a related and considerably ironic matter, Sony has been providing a work-around at the same site that lets you copy the protected songs to a portable music player.

The California lawsuit was filed before even more problems emerged. Virus maker Sophos reported today that it has spotted an e-mail going around that tries to exploit the controversial file-hiding abilities of antipiracy software embedded on some of Sony BMG's music CDs.

So unless the owner of one of those CDs has already downloaded Sony's patch to make the software visible again, and antivirus software companies beat virus creators to the punch, some music fans have been hit with a Trojan horse virus as a result of listening to a legally purchased CD on their computers.

More suits are expected to follow the California filing.

A second nationwide class action lawsuit is expected to be filed against Sony in a New York court this week, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation in Italy has filed papers with the Italian police alleging Sony is guilty of "illicit acts" and calling for an investigation.

Another Italian consumer group, Altroconsumo, sent a cease-and-desist letter to the Italian division of Sony BMG, the group announced. The letter asks Sony to not distribute the rootkit CDs in Italy.

Sony BMG did not return calls seeking comment.

Conan's wife just had a baby the day before and the show had been in reruns
