Re: Patti and Lenny in San Francisco

And.... The best version of "Birdland" I have ever heard, and I have heard quite a few.

Okay, since no one else has posted I will post a few impressions of the San
Francisco show.

The Great American Music Hall is a relatively small place (600-800 people?),
ornately decorated, good acoustics. It hosts a lot of folk and jazz shows
as well as some rock.

You can find a picture here if you're interested:

I thought she was in pretty good form and clearly having a good time. There
were a few missed entries and during Redondo Beach she stumbled, they
stopped the song, and she did a verse over again. Later on in the evening
she was sort of pausing for a bit and then she said she had been stalling
for time because she didn't feel like doing a song, only then she had
remembered she'd already done it. Only Patti can get away with stuff like
that and still hold the audience in the palm of her hand. And she did.

She started off reading solo (including a reading of Piss Factory that as
excellent). After two poems, she was joined by Lenny. Hearing the two of
them play acoustic guitar together was a real treat. Over the course of the
evening they were joined on piano by Jessie and on bass by (I didn't catch
his name) the head of their crew. The show moved back and forth between
various configurations.....just Patti and Lenny together (with just the two
of them on stage you can really see the connection between them), with Lenny
sometimes on acoustic and sometimes electric.....Patti, Lenny and
Jessie...and all four of them. Patti played clarinet on a couple of songs.

One song dedicated to Richard Sohl.

She said something about the 30th anniversary and how initially she didn't
think it was that big a deal but now she was starting to really like the
idea of commemorating it. Someone shouted out "seems like yesterday" and
she just sort of looked at him and said, sarcastically,"yeah, all 30 years
just like yesterday". And at the end of the show she said "30 years, just
like *that* "

I did not take notes, so I don't have a set list. As best I recall, she
played the following, but this is not in order and I'm sure I'm forgetting
something. Maybe someone else will post a proper list or at least correct
my errors.

(Poem) Gloria in Excelsis Deo
(Poem) Piss Factory
Redondo Beach
My Blakean Year
Gandhi
Birdland
Kimberly
Wing
Ghost Dance
Seven Ways of Going
Beneath the Southern Cross
Dancing Barefoot
Like A Rolling Stone
Free Money
People Have the Power
Babelogue
Rock and Roll Nigger
Gloria

I hope someone taped this show....
