I'd give Oliver a little credit as an OK guitar player.  But the
difference between him an Tom Verlaine is night and day.  
Verlaine is a genuine major talent and Oliver just isn't.

One time at a concert I attended Patti let Oliver sing a song and
his voice was horrible.

I do give him credit for two things.  First of all, he collaborated
with Patti in writing Fireflies, which is one of her best songs of the 90's
IMHO.  And the other thing, of course, is that he cheered her up 
a lot after the death of so many other people close to her in 1995.
