The couple of times I spoke with Oliver I thought he was rather nice. He
even expressed that his guitar playing wasn't good enough, so I don't think
he overestimated his ability. He played an important role in Patti's life
for a while, and like Mitch said, cheered her up at a rather dark time of
her life. Don't mean to preach, but there is a story about the who gets to
throw the first stone... Any takers?
And of course, there is no reason to compare his guitar playing with Tom's.
Tom has been playing guitar about as long or longer (?) than Oliver has been
around.
I just read that not only is the unemployment rate soaring, but christmas
spending is making the storeowners quite happy already (in Austria). What an
awful correlation!
In the hope that you all get through the holiday season sanely, and without
incurring too much debt,
Best wishes,
Alice

I'd give Oliver a little credit as an OK guitar player. But the
difference between him an Tom Verlaine is night and day.
Verlaine is a genuine major talent and Oliver just isn't.
One time at a concert I attended Patti let Oliver sing a song and
his voice was horrible.
I do give him credit for two things. First of all, he collaborated
with Patti in writing Fireflies, which is one of her best songs of the 90's
IMHO. And the other thing, of course, is that he cheered her up
a lot after the death of so many other people close to her in 1995.
