For 32 years the Poetry Project at the Saint Marks Church has a poetry
marathon on New Years Day and Patti was there again. She usually reads a
poem but last night played a guitar (one chord used as rhythm) and sang
Gandhi Gandhi. Sang it as a poem-not sure how to explain that. It was
wonderful. As someone adjusted the mike for her guitar she said "that's
OK, it's only one chord." And it was! Lenny had earlier read a piece
about CBGB that was great as well. Jim Carroll read an amazing poem.
It's a fantastic event. I live across the street and was married there
so I usually attend. Allan Ginsberg once was entering the front door as
I was leaving but I was too astounded to say anything to him. Happy New
Year to you all.
