Hi Listers,

Any Cat Power fans out there? I've been listening to her new album "The
Greatest" (not a hits collection) constantly for the past week. Really
excellent. Much different than Patti, but there's a similar worldliness that I
think will appeal to Patti fans. Highly recommended. I'm taking my daughter to
see her in L.A. on the 22nd.

Phil

The new album is great. I've liked all the Cat Power
records. Each new one becomes my favorite. I'll be
seeing her in New York on the 14th.

I have a copy of the Easter show, and I will offer it to the first 5
people who e-mail me offlist with their name and mailing address. I hope
that you in turn will pass it on.

This is the first time that I have been a "copier", so please let me
know (gently) if I'm doing anything wrong.

It is a wonderful, wonderful disc. The poems, especially.

I offered this up a few weeks ago, and only got one response.
I'd like to give myself one more chance, so I don't feel guilty about not
spreading enough 'love'...er cds.

I'm offering up 4 copies of the 12/30/05 Bowery Ballroom show that Anthony
was gracious to spread. Weed 'em if you can, if you're burnerless I'll still
send you a copy. This is an audio cdr offer.

Send your mailing address offlist to my email address here.

Thanks,
Jeff

GREAT! I got four more requests, so I'll be mailing them out in the next day
or so.
Look for others on this list to keep spreading this show.

It was thirty years ago today,
that the band began to play...

(okay so it was 35 years ago) when Patti and Lenny took to the stage of St Marks Church to begin an amazing career...

Patti sang MACK THE KNIVE and performed an early version of
Ballad of a Bad Boy, written for Sam Shepard...

  ******************************

PATTI SMITH: Lenny Kaye and I have a tape of our first poetry reading on February 10th, 1971 at St. Marks Church. It will be its 35th anniversary and we do have a tape of that, so Lenny is going to put it out as a Mer Record. It was on Bertold Brecht's birthday, and Lenny Kaye played the guitar, while I read poems and sang Mack the Knife.

MACK THE KNIFE (By Kurt Weill & Bertold Brecht)

Oh the shark has pretty teeth, dear
And he shows them pearly white
Just a jack knife has MacHeath, dear
And he keeps it out of sight

When the shark bites with his teeth, dear
Scarlet billows start to spread
Fancy gloves though wears MacHeath, dear
So there's not a trace of red

On the sidewalk, Sunday morning
Lies a body oozing life
Someone's sneaking round the corner
Is the someone Mack the knife?

>From a tug boat by the river
A cement bag's dropping down
The cement's just for the weight, dear
Bet you Mack is back in town

Louie Miller disappeared, dear
After drawing out his cash
And MacHeath spends like a sailor
Did our boy do something rash?

Sukey Tawdry, Jenny Diver
Polly Peachum, Lucy Brown
Oh the line forms on the right, dear
Now that Mack is back in town

"You'll go down if you don't stand up"

With shorn head and his convict face, the great German playwright Bertolt Brecht swaggered his way into the landscape of theatre and revolutionized it. A poet with a genius for dialogue, his plays are bold, simplistic and monstrous with poetic vision.

He has given us world and world peopled with the likes of Baal, Jenny the Pirate, Mac Heath and Mother Courage. Characters who make us think. He has, in his brief fifty-eight years, brought the downtrodden into the boxing ring to spar endlessly with the oppressor.

He used his gifts to speak for the people. He paid a high price but such as he usually do. We send you greetings B. B.! Like Jean Genet you stand as one of the sacred bums of art.

THE MURDERED BOY (for Sam Shepard)

  the murdered boy
the murdered boy
the murdered boy

Oh I was bad
didn't do what I should
mama catch me with a lickin'
and tell me to be good
when I was bad twice times
she pushed me in a hole
and cut off all my fingers
and laid them in a finger bowl

My mother killed me
my father grieved for me
my little sister Alma Lee
wept under the almond tree

Oh I loved a car
and when I was feeling sad
I'd lay down on my daddies ford
and I'd start to feel good
but I got real bad
robbed hubcaps from the men
and sold them to the women
then stole them back again
and you know when I was grown
had hubcaps of my own
and a Hudson Hornet car
and rolled the pretty ladies
and often went too far

I went to Chicago
I went to Kalamazoo
I slid down to Nashville
raced in Tolkume
I rode to Salinas
rode by the sea
but the people all scolded
and pointed to me
they said there's a bad boy
I was so bad boy
that they gathered their daughters
I heard what they said
stay away from him honey
cause that boy is bad
and though he's hung good
and flashes that loot
steer away from his highway
he rides a wrong route
cause he's a bad boy
Yeah I was so bad boy
my mama killed me
my father grieved for me
my little sister Alma Lee
wept under the almond tree

She Wept For Me

And I wept on the stock car
I crashed through the trees
fenders hot as angels
blazed inside me
I captured the junkyards
I jack knifed the cars
and sped to the canyon
but never hid far
from the auto mechanics
car wreckers
den of thieves
murderers greasers
I worshiped these men
but they hated me mom
They called me mamas boy
they screamed me to leave them
they threatened to me then
mom mom mom
Mom Mom Mom

Oh Monday at midnight
til Tuesday at two
drunk on tequila
I was thinking of you mom
I drove my car on mom
My stock car was blazing
wrecking cars was my art
I held a picture of you ma
close to my heart
I rode closed window
it was 90 degrees
the crowd was screaming
screaming at me they hated me
they said I was nonsense
true diver chicken driver
no sense

  But I couldn't hear them
I couldn't see
those fenders hot as angels
blazed inside me
I sped on lined with speed and heat
and mama I cracked up with the croud at my feet
I rolled in flames rolled in a pit
where you laid me out with a tire iron
and shot me with your shit

And I could've got up
bur the crowd it screamed no
That boy is evil
too bad for parole
so bad his mama
rolled him in a hole
and cut off all his fingers
and laid them in a finger bowl

His mother killed him
His father grieved for him
His little sister Alma Lee
wept under the almond tree

Did anyone attend?

I did but I just can't write the great reviews I read here so I 'll just
make a few comments until someone else steps up.

Surfice to say it was lovely. Pattil seemed to smile thu the whole evening.

Highlights-
She showed us her French medal!
She had a small laughing fit at the beginning of one poem, and said
something to the effect of when that happens she has to do something different and
then did an acoustic "my B. Year".
She told a funny story of running into Bob Dylan on the street (she tried
not to catch his eye) but he said "Hey, Patti" What's with this Dylan's Dog?
And she replied "It's just a dream, Bob".

I found it endearing the way she introduced almost every poem as "here's a
little poem" or "this is a little poem".

Mostly, the history of the place, the podium. Thinking of all the hands
that shuffled papers and touched the as described by patti "cracked leather".
Leading up to our girl/woman Patti.

Aside: the ppl behind me talking so much I almost had to move. At one
point one said "she's funny" with surprise. I knew when I would turn around at
the end it would be "kids". It was. It's ok :)

Patti recently confirmed that this recording does exist and that Lenny
was considering it for a "Mer Records release". I do not believe that
it has circulated amongst collectors.

That sounds incredibly great. I'll get one if it comes out.
Does Mer Records still exist or was that just a figure of speech?

An alleged copy of the performance was on ebay on cassette a while back. It
was yanked very quickly, however.

What'd ya'll think of the Opening Ceremonies? OMG, if there's one thing
it proved is that Italians have even funnier fashion sense than French
(Remember the weird shit at the opening of the '92 Games in Albertville?
WHEEE!)

And WTF was up with all the 70's disco music during the march of the
nations? That was just weird.

Ok, the lighting of the Cauldron was downright AWESOME! Still photos will
never do it justice, WOW! Why can't the USA figure out nifty ways to do THAT
like other countries do? The Lillehammer games had the Flame enter the
stadium...by a ski jumper! Barcelona's was lit by the archer with a flaming
arrow...which EVERY boy in history has wanted to shoot :) And the Sydney
games, the Cauldron rising up AROUND Cathy Freeman.

Anyway, I'm a huge fan of the Games, especially the Winter Games. Snow
and ice are just so dang purty :)

What DID I think? Was thinking involved? The whole event was pretty
wild. Even though there wasn't even a beer in the house, several
times I had that "Have I been smoking something?" feeling that 20th &
21st century Euro Festivities impart. The idea-free
choreography! The march-of-the-nations sign bearers wearing dresses
with mountains and teeny trees at the hem! The astounding,
inexplicable Disco Dance Mix march-in music selection! I recall
hearing "I Will Survive" and "Sweet Dreams Are Made of This" among
many other remarkable choices, and even the NBC commentators lost it
at one point ("Yes, I'm sure the Slovenian team made a special
request - we want 'YMCA' to be playing when we walk into the
stadium"). Finally my husband and I decided the DJ had locked
himself/herself into the sound booth and was going crazy, recalling
the glory days of Studio 54 and the Ritz Ballroom, while the rest of
the production team ran around looking for a fire axe to get in and
put on something more dignified.

Sophia Loren and Susan Sarandon and Yoko Ono! Peter Gabriel singing
"Imagine" to a crowd that included Laura Bush!

As for the dancing ... well, my fave was the chick enacting
Boticelli's Venus. Though she didn't have a lot to do; I guess it's
hard to choreograph a painting, but Uma Thurman did a much better job
w/ the same role in Terry Gilliam's "Munchausen" movie.

And I agree about the torch-lighting - not sure Barcelona will ever
be topped, but the pyro was just fantastic.

Now for a couple of weeks of campy fun ...

Hey, everyone.
I have received my copies of the
12/30 and 12/31 shows.
As promissed, I am offering to make copies to the
people who email me off the list.

For now, I'll make 5 copies of 12/30 show only. It's
a double CD set. So not to get confused I'll offer
12/31 after these are out.

I'll take the first 5 emails with the subject line
"Copy 12/30 Bowery show" (that's a popular list, so
please, identify what the message is about, somehow)

Also, if anyone knows, if someone has made an artwork
for these cds and it's somewhere on a web, I'd
appreciate an info.

I have discs of that one (14 June 1980). SQ is not good, though not as
bad as the preceeding show (10 September 1979 Florence Italy).

Back in the Spring of 1983 Suzanne Vega warmed up for the Lenny Kaye

Not much out there on the web about it that I could find [below is the
only review]. Has anyone seen it?

http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117927030?categoryid=31&cs=1&query=all+and+we+and+are+and+saying&display=all+we+are+saying

As with her first star-questing docudocu, "Searching for Debra
Winger," the greatest asset of this Rosanna Arquette pic is Arquette
herself. Her enthusiasm and openness encourage her favorite musicians,
an eclectic "Who's Who" of rock 'n' rollers, to answer questions with
astounding candor in this exploration of the music scene. Discussing
the current state of the bizbiz or how to balance life and art, pic is
edited in an unforced conversational flow, providing few revelations
but offering quality time with Joni Mitchell, Peter Gabriel, Andre
3000, Steve Tyler and Chrissie Hynde, among others. Pic should prove a
cable standard.
Bitterness and disillusionment about where the music business has gone
are the order of the day, especially among the older artists.
Mitchell, in virtual retirement, likens herself to an old horse that
refuses to go over the jumps again, unwilling to run an increasingly
hostile, aggressively dumb media gantlet. David Crosby compares his
heyday -- and its 40 or 50 smaller record companies -- with the
present handful of big conglomerates "who wouldn't know a song if it
flew up their nose and died."

MTV, with its emphasis on how a performer looks, comes in for its
share of flak.

Meanwhile, Steve Tyler bemoans his dramatic loss of income, as
Arrowsmith's catalog, which used to be worth millions, has now become
completely devalued by Internet downloading.

Some of the younger musicians, disgusted with profit-obsessed record
companies, welcome the alternate distribution possibilities opened up
by the Web. But even Thom Yorke of Radiohead feels that, all in all,
"It's really a good time to go and stand in the shadows again."

Arquette wisely times her interview snippets at varying lengths to
safely fall midrange between gimmicky sound bite and tedious rant.
Sometimes hidden just behind the camera, and sometimes onscreen curled
up right next to her subject, Arquette always manages to bring the
tone back to casual, thoughtful exchange, with a few well-timed
zingers thrown in for comic relief (i.e. Crosby's summation of Britney
SpearsBritney Spears: "About as deep as a birdbath...").

Marilyn Manson, Sting, Mary Blige or Annie Lennox talk with passion
about commitment to their art. Andre 3000 wryly recounts his
transition from shy composer to flamboyant front man for Outkast.

When the conversation turns to the stars' private lives, Arquette's
quiet acceptance and lack of prurient curiosity yield felicitous
results, particularly with distaff rockers. Thus Chrissie Hynde, who
always saw herself as "such a bloke," talks about how weird it felt to
be onstage performing in a nursing bra.

Wondering if there are two versions of the Easter show circulating. The copy I recieved is numbered and edited into tracks slightly differently than the one whose covers are on dimeadozen:

http://www.dimeadozen.org/attachments/76230/871600/Patti%20smith%2012-30-05%20front-%20fixed.jpg

http://www.dimeadozen.org/attachments/76230/871601/Patti%20Smith%2012-30-05%20back-fixed.jpg

It also has a couple of glitches, which is how it came to the person who kindly burned it for me, and seems to be missing "Privilege". Has anyone else noticed this?

It's a great show though. I love how she enunciates the words to R'R N diffrently than usual. Refreshing version of a song she does so often.

Anyone re-seeding that or the 12/31 show yet?

-Tom

Tom,

I wasn't aware there were two versions of the Easter show. There was a
mistake with the covers that you have linked below, but the show attached
to them is the same. Maybe that's where some of the confusion is coming from.

There is supposedly two versions from the 31st. One audience and one
soundboard, but they sound pretty much the same to me. The SBD show
initially had a glitch with one of Patti's raps between songs being
repeated. There was a patch posted to fix that. This show was initially put
up on DaD, but pulled because of the Sirius broadcast.

Probably not much help...

Some people (including me) prefer the SBD (Sirius) version of 12/31/05,
others prefer the AUD version.

Tom, does the version of 12/30/05 with glitches otherwise sound
identical to the other one?  I know of 2 AUD recordings of both shows;
on 12/30/05 both shared the same set of mics; I haven't heard that the
"other" AUD of either night circulates.

I prefer the SBD version too. At least, that was the one I chose to share
with friends. The audible differences are subtle I think, but the SBD might
sound a bit cleaner if that makes any sense.

Well, I've only heard the one I recieved. The sound is great, it just skips a little bit a couple of times, during applause, so no big deal, to me anyway. The main thing is that there's no "Privilege" on it. Does everyone else have that? It's listed on the cover from dimeadozen.

What's a good easy way to print these two pictures in CD cover size? Thanks,

Does anybody have a copy that includes "Privilege"?

I don't know why they always make them so large. Maybe something to do with people's screen resolution, or printer capabilities. Anyway, I don't have photoshop, so I rescaled them in MS photo editor. The back cover was way too wide so I fucked with it in the MS paint program and got it thinner. Had to move the picture over and under the lettering. Fun! I put it up here if anybody wants it:

http://www.fluencyllc.com/advopath/pattismith/12-30-05.html

This prints the perfect size in my printer anyway. Good luck. And all apologies to the original artist!

The one I got from the tree differs in that there is no "Privilege", track 16 on disc 1 is "Patti rap (that was my birthday gift to you)" from your second disc, and there are 9 tracks on disc 2.

Hey,

I'm totally new to being a weed, seed, leaf or whatever, but someone was
nice enough to send me two CD's of the 12/30/05 show. (I don't know if
Privilege is on it or not. I keep listening to Beneath the Southern Cross for
inspiration and the Lobster Palace song when I need a laugh.) Anyway, the kind
soul who sent it to me asked me to be a twig or mold spore or whatever and
make and send five copies to others. If you'd like a copy, send me your
address and I'll get it to the first five people who respond who aren't wrapped up
if Privilege is on it or not. Set me free.

Be well (and Happy Valentine's Day),

Kent

My Easter from the weed has Privilege and disc one ends on Patti sending
Godspeed to us after singing it. Disc 2 starts with Beneath...

I'll make four copies to those who want to get a complete copy.

It contained "Privilege".

Amateur footage of "Gloria" and "Redondo" at Tower Records:

Iwas hoping to see Sam Shepard in the audience, but no luck.
Is that JayDee playing guitar?

Another audience video, of "PHTP" at Columbia last week:

Pro video of "Don't Smoke in Bed":

Never saw that before. Looks like it's from the "Gone Again" period. I wonder who directed it. Didn't Les Blank do the "Summer Cannibals" video? This has a similar look.

the show posted by taper jon was not the sbd but an aud patched out of me. the glitch (spike in the applause) early in the show occured when i went to turn down my signal between songs and accidently caught the line/mic switch. the mics were senn 404's (to correct what jon listed on the dime).

i did record a sbd of the 12/31 show. it has some serious issues. it seems there was some sort of noise gate or limiter on the overall mix. at varying times, the kick drums, the bass and patti vocal's all suffer from distortion despite plenty of head room. i'm attempting a mix with the aud to see if it will even out the sound somewhat, but at best it will be heavy on the aud. i have yet to hear the sirius broadcast.

the only other "sbd" recording that i'm aware of is the feed that the soundman records directly onto hard drive so he can do a mix at a later date. i'm not aware of that being mixed yet or circulated at this time.

i did an aud of the 12/30. i will gladly circulate it if there is interest, but since there was already a version posted from another source i truly didn't feel that need to rush out another version (though folks who know me , "rush" is a relative term).

i hope this clears up a little of the confusion.

peace!
adam

I've had four takers. Thanks, everybody, but this ship has sailed for now.
