FW: A little Hey, Joe history

Don't know which Warlocks they're talkin' about.

Jerry, Pig, Bobby, Billy and later Phil played their first gig on May 5,
1965 at a pizza parlor in SF.

They changed their name to the Grateful Dead in November.

I had no idea. The only versions I ever heard were Jimi Hendrix and
Patti.

Weren't the Warlocks a Lou Reed pre-Velvet Underground band?

PS - I always liked Roy Buchanans' version!!!

Do you know of any others?

What's your favorite version?

Hey Joe - Introduction

"Hey Joe", a traditional song performed by many artists. Sometimes
credited to
Billy Roberts. Sometimes credited to Chet (or Chester) Powers a.k.a.
Jesse
Oris Farrow, nie Dino Valente who became the lead singer of Quicksilver
Messenger Service. In 1965 "Hey Joe" was recorded by The Leaves. In 1966
they
recorded it again with a fuzztone guitar sound. Also the Surfaris,
Byrds,
Love, Shadows of Night, Warlocks and many other bands recorded the song
in
1966. Tim Rose recorded "Hey Joe" in 1966, one month before the Leaves'
version entered the charts. Rose played the song at less than half the
tempo.
He changed the key of the song to E instead of A. Rose also roared out
the
verses, and added his own variant on their structure. Jimi Hendrix
picked up
this version of "Hey Joe" and made a European hit out of it in 1967.
Since
then many other great guitar players have performed this song. A
Japanese
group called the Golden Cups recorded a version in 1968 that adapted the
song
to different cultural standards.

  HEY JOE! - 23/10/1953

2 weeks at #1 - 8 weeks on chart

Hey Joe, where d'ya find that purdy girly

Where'd ya get that jolly dolly

How'd ya rate that dish I wish was mine

Hey Joe, she's got skin that's creamy dreamy

Eyes that look so lovey dovey

Lips as red as cherry berry wine

Now listen Joe I aint no heel

But old buddy let me tell you how I feel

She's a honey she's a sugar pie

I'm warning you I'm gonna try

To steal her from you

Hey Joe, though we've been the best of friends

This is where that friendship ends

I gotta have that dolly for my own

Hey Joe come on lets be Buddy buddies

Show me you're my palsy walsy

Introduce that pretty little chick to me

Hey Joe, quit that waiting hesitating

Let me at her whats the matter

You're as slow as any joe can be

  Now come on Joe

Lets make a deal

Let me dance with her to see if she is real

She's the cutest girl I've ever seen

I tell you face to face I mean to steal

Her from you

Hey Joe, we'll be friends until the end

But this looks like the end my friend

I gotta have that dolly for my own

I gotta have that dolly for my own
