About Vault Radio

Bill Graham and his concert promotion company, Bill Graham Presents,
produced more than 35,000 concerts all over the world. His first
venue, the legendary Fillmore Auditorium, was home to many of rock's
greatest performers - Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Doors, The
Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Led
Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Prince - and the list goes on and
on.

Graham taped thousands of live performances and stored the tapes in
the basement of the BGP headquarters. These tapes and the concerts
they captured lay dormant until the Bill Graham archive was acquired
by Wolfgang's Vault (Bill Graham's given first name was Wolfgang) in
2003.

Vault Radio is now playing selected tracks from these concerts in an
FM-quality, 128K digital radio stream. Songs will be added to and
removed from the radio show on a regular basis. We will be
broadcasting unaltered live performance music from many of the
greatest bands of the last 40 years. The music you hear on Vault Radio
has not been sweetened or polished. You'll be listening to what the
band played that night - nothing more, nothing less.

I use Azureus, an older version I have on my powerbook. On my iMac I updated to the newest version and every time I go
to use it, it crashes as soon as it opens. I tried to go back and get the older version but the same thing happened so I'm not
going to update my powerbook. Then I use xAct to turn it into either a wav or aiff (?) file. Next I use Toast to burn the shows
on to cds. But to use Azureus on my powerbook I did have to buy an external mouse so I could "right click" to open the file. I just couldn't figure out a way to do it w/o the ability to right click and I tried a whole lotta different ways.

Greetings Babelites and Other Seekers of Tower of Tongues,

Does that sound pious enough? I'm practicing being a new age
prophet so I can build a web site to unload several pounds
of mystical self-help books that have become completely
useless to me.... maybe it's just me, but......

The real point of this post is: If you are an artist of any kind
and you've had your ass kicked by life, the world, circumstance,
whatever, keep on plugging and growing.

I know a woman who a couple years ago didn't think her
CDs could be found anywhere but the 99 cent bin. She never
gave up and she just got a major label deal. On top of that,
one of her songs was nominated for an Oscar... and she'll
be performing it live tonight at a gig that rates higher than
the Grammys.

Hard work and talent is one thing, but add to that the fact
that Bird is one of the nicest, most up-front and honest, for
real human beings on this planet.

If anyone cares to join, I do a Yahoo group for her. Most Patti
fans would like her music.

www.yahoogroups.com/group/VelvetWings

Here's the main site (that will be re-vamped very soon)

www.birdyork.com

(I've teased her that the above reads like Birdy Ork)

The song and the movie Crash mean a lot to me personally.
It will blow my mind if she wins tonight. If she doesn't, oh well,
there's still no stopping the well-spring of love and creativity
she has cultivated within and around her.

Paul

And now back to our regularly scheduled over-barring religious
programming.

For lo, my brethren, ye cameth not unto the land of those
who sing praises of evil for the gold of the....

The March 2006 issue of Harper's Bazaar includes a two page article
written by Patti about ties. It doesn't seem to be available online.

If you're trying to find it on a newstand, it has a red cover and a
photo of Madonna. Patti's article is on pp.209-210.

C.B.G.B. owner says Essex building doesnbt rock

By Lincoln Anderson

bThis ainbt no Mudd Club, or C.B.G.B.,b David Byrne sang. Hilly Kristal, owner of C.B.G.B., feels the same way about a property the city recently offered him for a new home for the legendary punk music club.

At the end of last year, Kristal reached an agreement with Bowery Residentsb Committee to vacate his space on the Bowery by this coming Halloween. Since then, hebs been looking both in Las Vegas and Manhattan for new locations to reopen.

Speaking on Monday, Kristal said hebd just returned from Vegas where he was checking out several different spaces. He said he likes one of the locations a lot but is bgetting the money situation together first before we doing anything.b

bI like Las Vegas,b he said. bIbm a little sore about what happened in New York. But I really feel I would like to do it in New York, despite what happened. I have about three New York spaces Ibm looking at, and Ibm going to look at others too.b

In addition to B.R.C. effectively kicking Kristal out of the property C.B.G.B. occupied for 23 years, Kristal was also disappointed when Mayor Bloombergbs pledge to help him find a new space didnbt pan out. According to Kristal, the city offered him the Essex Market building on Essex St. south of Delancey St. in the Seward Park Urban Renewal Area.

bWe looked at that place that the mayorbs office was offering,b he said. bIt has a little liquor store and coffee shop in it b we would have gotten the rest of the buildingb&. It was nothing b itbs just a shell. They wanted an advance of $5 million. It was a bit of a shock to me. I thought they were going to get me a place that was going to be reasonable.b

By contrast, Kristal said, bThe mayorbs office in Las Vegas has been very helpful. Theybve been finding me places. Itbs a good feeling.b

Meanwhile, he said hebs having more luck working with Newmark Real Estate. Hebs currently looking at two spots in Times Square, two in the East Village, one in Noho, another in Tribeca and two or three places above 14th St., including btwo floors in an old printing factory around W. 18th St. Itbs pretty reasonable,b he said.

Punk Rock Faggots come under fire
A band of high-school punks inspire ire with online activists

On Saturday, Feb. 25, www.PDXPress.net sponsored a benefit concert at
Reed College that raised $900 for Oregon Books to Prisoners. A product
of the punk website's altruism, the event hardly seems objectionable.
So how did it become a flashpoint for online social activists? Seven
words: Wolfgang Williams and the Punk Rock Faggots.

A local high-school band that was set to open the show, WWPRF raised
the ire of a man who called himself only Topher. The man was allowed
to take the stage to share his views after organizers refused to boot
WWPRF from the bill at his request.

Witnesses report that Topher, who later turned down WW's request for
an interview, argued that an all-white band would never call itself
the Punk Rock Niggers, so calling a band of straight guys "faggots"
was just as offensive. Twenty or so hecklers out of the crowd of 200
did little to dispel accusations of homophobia, taunting the activist.
WWPRF's bass player, Andre Fortes, thanked the activist for sharing
his views, and then the band played, starting its set with the song
"I'm So Straight."

Fortes later explained to WW that the band played that songfeaturing
the lyrics "Punch me in the face and give me a beer/ I gotta prove I
ain't a queer""to point out the fact that everything we're about is
satirical."

But the satire fell on skeptical ears at Portland Independent Media
Center (www.portland.indymedia.org), where Topher published an account
of his experience at the show that elicited more than 50 comments,
almost all verbose and angry in their support of the activist.

In that article, Topher relayed a response from Fortes claiming that
the band was simply carrying on a punk-rock tradition, adopting the
moniker as a challenge to high-school bullies who called the band
members "faggots." Topher countered that apparently "they were
entitled to perpetuate this hate speech beyond their high-school
walls."

Band leader Wolfgang Williams disagrees. "We were trying to reduce the
power of the word by calling ourselves faggots," Williams told WW.

Since the performance, show organizers and the band have apologized
for the actions of the crowd, and Oregon Books to Prisoners even
posted an open apology on Indy Media. The apology is understandable,
but Indy Media's rejection of WWPRF's wordplay is a little more
puzzling, considering that community's history with slippery
semantics.

In 2004, an Indy Media author praised Patti Smith for her Crystal
Ballroom performance, citing her encore as "the best" part of the
show. The song the white punk legend performed was "Rock 'n' Roll
Nigger," which culminated in a group chant of "Everyone's a nigger!"
The article garnered four comments, all of which were supportive.

A.V. Club
Inventory: Ten Memorable Saturday Night Live Musical Moments
By Noel Murray
March 7th, 2006

[snip]

2. April 17, 1976Patti Smith

Though Saturday Night Live was broadcast from New York during an era
when the city's clubs were fostering a punk-rock revolution, the best
of those bands rarely got a chance to take the SNL stage in their
prime. One major exception was Patti Smith, who appeared after her
album Horses had become a cult hit, but before she crossed over to the
mainstream with "Because The Night." Suddenly, an audience raised on
The Beatles and The Grateful Dead was asked to appreciate an
androgynous, atonal beat poet, embellishing the garage-rock classic
"Gloria" with lines about boys humping parking meters and her lack of
faith in Jesus. The comedy of John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd had found
its analogue.

KT Tunstall New Single And Tour Dates

[snip]

KT [Scottish singer-songwriter] has now played live to over 150,000
people during her own sell-out tours, with 'Suddenly I See' becoming a
particular favourite of her fans.

"This song was inspired by the picture of Patti Smith on the Horses
cover," says KT. "The black and white one with her in a man's suit
with the jacket over her shoulder. I realised that this image had
really stuck with me from seeing it years ago. I remember thinking,
'that's what I want to be when I grow up' (despite being in my mid-20s
at the time.) You know, when growing up becomes much more about
getting wise. I adore the sound of this song - it tickles my hillbilly
leanings. We used this instrument called a cajon, it9s a Spanish
slapbox, which gives it that junkyard acoustic feel."

[snip]

I checked the archives and did not see a mention of this, even though
this seems to be from August 2005 (so why it came in a recent google
alert, idunno).

Sonic Collage Coquette
The supreme extreme of Erica Quitzow
By Sharon Nichols

http://www.chronogram.com/issue/2006/03/arts/music/

She likens her work to a collage, layering and layeringMoog rumpus,
classical string pudding, heavy metal fever, quirky distorted vox
("Take the pieces that felt inspired, felt interesting, and capture
those pieces, try to put them together in a cohesive, songlike
structure," she explains). This artist is unclassifiable. Part
Rasputina, part Todd Rundgren. Patti Smith? Sure. Hole? Okay. Bach,
anyone? It's unequivocally refreshing and dramatic.

Identity & Anonymity
Basic human principles rear their heads in group photo show
BY RACHAEL LIBERMAN
Volume 5, Number 10 | March 9 - 15, 2006
http://www.gaycitynews.com/gcn_510/identity&anonymity.html

[snip]

Judy Linn's photography is an invitation to the Chelsea Hotel room
that Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe began sharing in 1971.
Featuring pictures of Smith, Mapplethorpe and Sam Sheppard, Linn's
black and white photography creates a voyeuristic view into the
personal lives of these famous names. "Robert Mapplethorpe in bed at
the Chelsea, #2" was a photo intended to help Mapplethorpe sell the
jewelry he was making and ended up being a stylistic inspiration when
he began his own career as a photographer. The playful photo shoot
allowed Linn and Smith to experiment with different identities; Smith
often liked to dress up as someone else, including Bob Dylan, and
expected Linn to do the same.

Patti featured on the official international media arm of the U.S.
government?

Wonder what she thinks of that, especially as the Bush Administration has
been moving to make it into a much cruder propaganda tool in the middle
east.

It's a surprisingly good article, no? I'm amazed to see it there. Perhaps the G-word is what made it happen... but to mention Ho Chi Minh? How in the world did this slip by the censors?

Good article - but some of the dates are wrong aren't they? BTN wasn't in
1983, and "Horses" came out in 1975, not 1974. Extremely nitpicky I know but
I guess I am like that..

...you'll know why. (This just HAD to be posted in its entirety!)

unfolding peace. Always, Dennis

Hallelujah and Namaste
By JESSIE TORRISI
Urban Studies
Published: March 12, 2006

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/12/nyregion/thecity/12yoga.html

THREE flights above the rumbling traffic of the Avenue of the
Americas, well-sculptured women and men rushed into Dana Flynn's
Sunday yoga class just before noon. Within minutes, they were lined up
on mats, legs crossed, backs straight, being led in chant as they
stared at mandarin and fuchsia walls.

"Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm," Ms. Flynn intoned.

"Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm," her students responded.

This was Sunday soul yoga at Laughing Lotus on West 19th Street in the
Flatiron District, or, as Ms. Flynn calls it, "Sunday morning
revival." For some New Yorkers, this sanctuary is as close as they
will ever come to church. Ms. Flynn is O.K. with that.

"People don't want religion, but they want yoga," she said the other
day after a session in which she melded vinyasa, an ancient flowing
yoga, with gospel hymns and sermons inspired by the music. "It just
feels natural. All of it is to exalt us."

The class had begun with the sound of "Amazing Grace" by the Blind
Boys of Alabama flooding the studio. Soon, 45 students were sweating
through warrior poses and upward and downward dogs. Within minutes,
the 16-foot windows were steamed over.

As students wobbled slightly in a tough pretzel-like position, their
eyes gazing skyward, Ms. Flynn raised the volume of the stereo. "Let
the music fill you with emotion!" she shouted. Bob Marley responded by
crooning, "Thank you, Lord!"

Ms. Flynn leads by example. Students have called her the drill
sergeant of love and the Janis Joplin of yoga.

"Dana has a way of reminding you of the greatness of life," said Nancy
Hess, a guitarist with the rock band Stereovision and a class regular.
"That's why people go to church on Sundays, to be reminded we're all
part of something."

Ms. Flynn, who is 44, came to yoga-as-church from Wall Street. In the
mid-80's, she left her job as a stockbroker at Smith Barney to open
Trixie's, a Hell's Kitchen hotspot that featured drag queen waitresses
and an amateur night at which Madonna was a regular. In 1999, she and
Jasmine Tarkeshi, her partner both at home and at the office, opened
Laughing Lotus.

At the Sunday morning session, Ms. Flynn delivered lines from the Sufi
poet Hafiz, and then some words of her own, with all the fervor and
emotion of a fiery preacher from the pulpit: "You've heard people say,
'I been saved?' Well, yoga saves you from living the wrong life,
from a bad attitude, from negative thoughts that don't express who you
really are."

The students stood on their heads, then rested on their backs like
corpses. The voice of the rocker Patti Smith wafted over them:
"Everything is holy. Everybody's holy. Everywhere is holy."

It was early, but "interview" is so obviously inaccurate. So, yeah, me too.

That's GREAT. I wish my Sunday yoga class would play those songs.
But on the other hand the thought of intense Manhattanites rushing to get to
their
yoga class on time still makes me glad I don't live in the big city.
Namaste,

- Mitch

Somehow I've been lucky enough to get a copy of both of Patti's shows at
BAM last year and I'm willing to start a weed.

This performance features Lenny, Jay Dee and Tony supplemented by Tom
Verlaine, Flea and Jessie Smith.

Both shows are two discs with the first disc featuring Horses in its
entirety and the second disc containing the second half of the program,
and an encore.

Songs covered during the second half include Hendrix's Are You
Experienced?, Beneath The Southern Cross, R 'n' R Nigger, Pissing In A
River and others. The second sets vary somewhat. For instance Wild
Leaves is played 11/30/05 and PHTP on 12/1/05.

Personally I think the 12/1/05 show is better than what they did in
London because the band is playing it for the third time.

So I'm willing to burn these for 4 people who are willing to continue
the weed plus one person who is unable to do so.

I'll also do up to 5 straight trades.

Gary

Now that Gary's offering has closed, I am able to announce an upcoming
alternate opportunity that has been in the works for a number of days.

A friend of mine who got his BAM discs directly from the taper plans
another distribution in the near future. His plan is for a number of
weeds to be launched, with me to simultaneously torrent the shows on
Dime. Artwork is under construction; he is currently checking and
copying discs.

This is just to announce my friend's plan; we applaud Gary for sharing
this material so generously, and hope no one minds that we go ahead
with our plans too.

Peace and light,
coyote

Is there any chance that someone can post the shows as MP3s to a webpage for

I'd found mention about the suit in 1999 (which I had forgotten
about). However, I have yet to find any good/detailed information
about the case, its resolution and the parties' positions...let alone
the Valentine dispute.

In any case, looking at various song credits by "Blondie Music Inc."
material it all seems rather bizarre and petty.

My respect for Debbie has waxed and wained over the years, right now
it I am up in the air over this one. (Maybe she did deserve to be
slapped afterall. lol.)

>From what I can determine so far, the suit (which was denied by the
judge for the individuals but was allowed as co-owners of BMInc) was
over the use of "Blondie" when the band reformed. So obviously Infante
and Burke lost. (Did it come down to simply that they did not have a
controlling interest in BMInc.?) But positing it as them "suing to
rejoin the band," has me confused.

With all the industry 'chatter' it is hard to find an in depth report
of any kind about the case. Never mind the story behind the story,
which I suppose only they know (and of which there are likely at least
5 different versions).

And, even though I don't actually care that much, I am still curious.
For example: Did she ever make any statements as to why they were not
asked back?

I suppose it is the artist's/artists' prerogative as to who is in
"your" band...so I assume that is what the legal question revolved
around. From what I have garnered so far I think I would have ruled
the other way myself. Maybe if she had legally changed her name to
"Blondie" I would see it the other way.

Anyway, when I read this morning that they were actually on stage and
what happened I thought it was a _sad moment_ in RnR history - it
seems that is a legacy of the Hall of Fame itself, eh?

Kind of interesting in the context of Patti Smith vs./& PSG and the
HoFame.....so are the PSG a legal entity? I sure hope that doesn't
lead to a bunch of "shit" in the future! It would likely break my
heart.

Now I wonder also if it would be different if Burke and Infante had
not given up their rights to material to BMInc...would they at least
have been able to deny "Blondie" the current use of their songs?

It reminds me of when Johnette Napolitano was talking about song
copyrights and control at RockrGrl, cautioning song writers, but
saying also something like 'if Cheryl Crow wants to do one of your
songs she's going to do one of your songs."

Ever since I've wondered about the covers of PSG material and how that
plays out/is determined. For example, did Patti and/or Lenny want
Marilyn Manson to do RnRN? What is the record company's [Arista's]
role and does it depend on the contract?

Under U.S. copyright law, anyone may record and distribute a cover of
someone else's already-released song. This is provided for by the
Compulsory License section of the copyright code, 17 USC 115.

	http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode17/
usc_sec_17_00000115----000-.html

The covering artist pays the copyright holder (that's the songwriter
[individual or group] or a music publisher who bought the rights, not
the record label or copyright holder of the original sound recording)
a fixed royalty based on a statutory scheme.

A good write-up on this is a "how-to" from CDBaby:

Now I'm pretty sure Johnette was directing her comments in the Q&A to
song writers who do not produce their own works. (Not that she needs
me to clear her from appearing to be [as] ignorant.)

Okay, let me rephrase my question to redeem myself and bring it to a
bit on-topic....

Has either Patti or Lenny ever made any comments about MM's cover?

ps: "Hanging on the Telephone" happens to be playing on comcast this
minute. I'm rockin' out - lol.

Which is itself a cover. The original was recorded by San Francisco-based
The Nerves in 1976 or 1977. Much less produced than Blondie's version, the
original rocks.

Patti's theme for the year seems to be fashion. There is also
an interesting interview with her in the current issue of an English
fashion mag called ANOTHER MAGAZINE. It is distributed
worldwide, so should be able to find it locally in places that sell
fashion magazines. (It is the Spring 2006 issue, with Winona
Ryder on the cover.) Patti is not mentioned on the cover or in
the index, but there is an interview, great photos and handwritten
items from pp 208-220.

Some of the article and some of the pictures can be found at
www.anothermag.com - look for the current issue, then under
"people" - but there is more in the print version.

Kind regards

Andrew

Is it the New Blondie? <G>

The New Cars were on the Tonight Show last night, it was kewl. I saw them
listed as appearing and didn't know if it had anything to do with the old
group or not. Until Ric Ocasek was there front and center with a weird
two-tone hairdo :)

The article that is quoted says Ric Ocasek is not participating
in The New Cars. Looking at TheNewCars website
http://www.thenewcars.com/thenewcars/intro.htm
it looks like the guy with the two-toned hair is someone named
Kasim Sulton. His bio says in part:

Kasim Sulton's Biography

A highly coveted sideman, singer/songwriter Kasim Sulton is recognized
and respected the world over for his work with other artists, including
Todd Rundgren and Utopia, Meat Loaf, Joan Jett, Hall and Oates,

Patti Smith, Patty Smyth,

Mick Jagger, and Celine Dion to name just a few.

That's from http://www.thenewcars.com/index.cfm/pk/content/pid/400064

I've never heard of him. Has anyone else heard of him working with
Patti?

If this were true, it would be interesting to finally have some kind
of link between Patti and Patty besides their names.

OOPS!

Color me embarrassed! It LOOKED to ME like Okasek, only older and with
added chins. I did think of Todd Rungdren too.

Anyway, the band sounded good on at least that one song.

She-Rock
By Karuna Gurung

BangkokRecorder | 15.03.2006

This Friday at Pla Dib, BangkokRecorder celebrates lady rockers in our
first underground party. Here, we pay homage to key female bands in
rock history. We're not giong to give you a comprehensive list of the
countless women in contemporary music, but just offering a little
taste of CHICKS who ROCK.

[snip]

While drawing from '60s garage rock, the rise of angry, anarchical
punk music also has a lot to owe to one rocking chick, Patti Smith
(not to be confused with Scandal frontlady Patty Smyth). Smith was
known as "punk rock's poet laureate," bringing a feminist and cerebral
streak to this fresh new genre. Her album Horses (1975) has been
acclaimed as one of the finest rock releases of all time and proved
influential to punk rock bands in the
mid-'70s.

We've been through this!
Tatum O'Neal lost one boyfriend (Oliver Ray) to Patti Smith, and one husband (John McEnroe) to Patti Smythe.

I've just been informed that Patti will be on 4/4/06 in Rovereto (Italy, near Verona, Trento) during the Futuro-Presente Festival
dedicated to Philip Glass this year (last year it was Merce Cunningham). It lasts near a week with music, cinema,
exhibitions, dance, theatre...She will perform for a unique concert called "Footnote to Howl" with Philip Glass on piano as a tribute
to Allen Ginsberg's work. Also an exhibition of Patti Smith's photographic work.
