On Friday night, I was invited by a friend to attend a screening at the Cantor Film Center in NY which was a part of a project called "The Downtown Show: The New York Art Scene 1974-84". The screening was of footage shot by Pat Ivers and Emily Armstrong at various clubs and of various bands during that period. It was originally shown on "Nightclubbing" a local NYC cable access show in the early '80's. The screening was great fun and made me want to go out and start a band immediately.

Bands included in the edit they screened were:
Talking Heads ("Psycho Killer", as a trio)
Blondie ("Femme Fatale", before the boys got their haircuts)
The Heartbreakers w/ Richard Hell ("Chinese Rocks")
Dead Boys ("Search and Destroy")
Dead Kennedys
Lounge Lizards
Teenage Jesus and the Jerks
Contortions
Dead Boys w/ Divine
Stilettos w/ Tish and Snooky
Richard Hell and the Voidoids
Suicide
DNA
Iggy Pop
Levi and the Rockcats
The Cramps
The Heartbreakers
John Cale
The Offs
Max Blagg
Bush Tetras
Bad Brains
The Go-Go's
Pylon
Ballistic Kisses

During the Q&A after the screening, the filmmakers said that they always made friends with the soundmen at the venues where they shot, and got a soundboard feed. Theirs is apparently the only footage from that era with synchronized live sound. They said they were working on a DVD release for next year, so look forward to that. They shot tons of stuff, over a period of years, and said that a great deal of their footage was stolen at one point. Pat Ivers said that she was inspired to document these events by a performance by the Patti Smith Group and Television at Max's Kansas City. Ironically and unfortunately, once the project began, these two bands did not want to be filmed. A dapper Jay Dee was in attendance at the screening.

The footage of the entire Talking Heads set is up on Dime.

-Tom

Arquette probes music biz blues in documentary
Reuters. Tue Mar 7, 2006

[snip] But the film is far more than a bitching session about how the
good ol' days have passed. There's some stereotype-busting, too: Hynde
talking about wearing a nursing bra while rocking out onstage; Patti
Smith discussing how being a parent is the most important job she has
ever had; and Tom Petty and Elton John wistfully admitting that being
on the road without someone you love makes for an unbearably lonely
ride. [snip]

Taking to the director's chair, Rosanna Arquette interviews 50 of the
genre's top acts in any fan's dream come true.

[snip] The film is billed as "a Rosanna Arquette Experience," and to
allow you to experience her experience, she inserts herself into the
action, the way any fan might want to squeeze into a picture with
Patti Smith or Chrissie Hynde or Alison Goldfrapp. (Well, I would.)
There is a certain amount of kissy-huggy showbiz intimacy on display,
but Arquette is one of the tribe after all [snip]

Former lovers Peter Gabriel and Rosanna Arquette sat down for an
awkward chat as the actress filmed her new documentary "All We Are
Saying." Filmmaker Arquette interviewed rock superstars like Gabriel,
Patti Smith, Sting and Chrissie Hynde, among others, about their
musical inspirations and life away from touring.

But it's her chat about Gabriel's happy home life that stands out as
the film's most awkward moment - he famously dated the star in the
1980s and penned his hit "In Your Eyes" as a tribute to the actress.

Talking about combining his career as a rock star with his personal
life at his home in Box, near Bath, he tells Arquette, "I try to get
balance by integrating enough normal life in there but there is that
energy there and there are those temptations but I think the older you
get... I had my sort of middle period when I was doing my running
around - you may be aware of that. I'm a bit more settled now."

As Gabriel uncomfortably rocks in his chair, Arquette states, "I'm
glad you're settled, I am. I'm happy for you... You seem good. It's
good."

I finally watched this last week two times....

I'm assuming the interview with Patti took place in her home prior to
a BB show. There are 4 or 5 excerpts that make it in the final cut. (I
REALLY would like to see the footage off the cutting room floor,
especially after the credits ran with some outtakes.) There are also
several shots of her preforming on stage (and one in studio with
Lenny) - notably as the visual to RA's statement about rocknroll being
a powerful force.

The documentary is really a stream of consciousness (sort of) type of
thing - it meanders through many topics/threads.

I'm not recalling what Patti said at the end, but that was my favorite
excerpt. Anyone with a better memory who has seen it to help fill in
what Patti talks about????

Talk about access! While I can think of plenty of other folks I would

I got the feeling that the interview with Patti was backstage somewhere in
LA. At the beginning it says Los Angeles in the subtitle.

Here's most of the Patti bits from All We Are Saying. It might take a
moment to load or you can right-click and save the clip to your hard drive.
It's about 12.5MBs and 5:24 long.

http://www.rockndog.com/Patti_Smith_All_We_Are_Saying_300k.wmv

I wish someone would post the complete documentary in one of the
newsgroups. The only thing I found really off putting in the whole
documentary was what a big whiner Steven Tyler is.

About the April 14th show Kevin Dickson reported:
[snip]
3. The celeb count - which may in part have accounted for some of her
shyness - Rosanna Arquette, Eric Erlandson, Jackson Browne, Bijou
Phillips and Traci Lords, all in the two rows around me.
[snip]

At first I figured it might be there, but then I figured maybe Rosanna
was with friends/busy at that show. It was the place she was doing the
interview that made me think NYC. It was a guess as I have never been
to the BB, nor the Wilshire for that matter - let alone P's place!

I spoke briefly with one of them after the screening. I asked her if they had any Fleshtones or Slits, and she told me that they had filmed the Fleshtones, but that footage was stolen with a lot of other stuff at the same time as the equipment. She also said that the person she believed to be responsible was in the audience, but that she was a Buddhist and was letting that go!

Hello,

I've been away on vacation and came back to see all this activity
regarding the BAM trade. Is there a kind soul out there that can help me
out with a copy? I promise to send out four more to those that ask
including international fans.

I also have four copies of the 12/30/05 show. I offered them and no one
responded. Once again that can include international requests.

Please respond to any of these plea/offers privately.

Thanks.

Well actually what's 'interesting' about this is that it illustrates the
rather quirky way in which we Americans reckon dates. The example comprises, in
order,

hours, minutes, seconds, month, date, year

which isn't much order at all. A more, er, harmonious progression might be

    06.05.04 03:02:01

ie, 3:02:01 am on Thursday, 4 May 2006, or else

    01.02.03 04:05:06

ie, 4:05:06 am on Saturday, 3 February 2001. I believe the latter example
was actually mentioned in the press at the time.

But I quibble.

As is my wont.

Thank you Paolo!

I got the BAM shows today and offer them to 5 more fans out there who can or
cannot burn copies. Can't wait to have some peace and quiet and listen to
them! I'm in Austria, so Europeans are preferred, but I will of course send
to all.

Contact me off list.

Hour:minutes:seconds would be more consistent with year:month:day in
front as 06/05/04 01:02:03 or in back as 01:02:03 06/05/04 for May
4th, 2006, or 01:02:03: 04/05/06 on May 6th, 2004

meaning at 3:02 am it would cycle through 06/05/04 03:02:01 on May
4th, 2006; we already had 01/02/03 04:05:06 in Feb. 2, 2001;

Or if using the date as following the time then 01:02:03 04/05/06
during May 6th, 2004

Then are also the differences in American and European conventions(as
original propositioned) it would then be on May 4th, 2006, for
01:02:03 040/05/06

The only time this year those considerations collapse will be on June
6th at 06/06/06 06:06:06

09:O8.07 6543/2/1 9:08:07am on Jan. 2nd, 6543 should be interesting.

01:02:03 4567/8/9 Aug. 9, 4567 or Sep. 8
9876/5/4 03:02:01:00 - May 4th, 9876 or Apr 5
01:23:45: 6/7/89 - June, 7 xzx89 or June 7, xx89

01:02:03 4567/8/9 Aug. 9, 4567
9876/5/4 03:02:01:00 - May 4th, 9876
01:23:45: 6/7/89 - June, 7 xzx89

76/05/04 03:02:01 May 4th, xx76

(12/30/40 05:06:07 Patti's 95th Birthday)

Can you think of other permitations?

Hello,

Thanks to all the people that responded to my plea for a copy of the
show because I missed out while on vacation. Patti fans are truly the
best. Very generous indeed.

However I still have two copies of the 12/30/05 show if there is still
anyone that needs one. Apparently we are a group that has a lot of
burning capabilities and everyone ends up satisfied.

Thanks again everyone. You rock!

Dave

Hi all !

In a recent interview to an italian newspaper Patti
said:
"I'm coming back to New York to begin my new record.
The night of Friday before Easter i have an
appointment at the Jimi Hendrix Studio; the first
track to be recorded will be a song by Jimi Hendrix. When the album
will be ended i will be in Italy again during a great
world tour".

I have asked to the italian agent if any date in Italy
is already scheduled but at the moment i have not got
any reply.....

peace
Paolo

Program
"Effetto Glass"

Concerto Patti Smith-Philip Glass: "Footnote to Howl. The Poet Speaks".
Omaggio ad Allen Ginsberg. Prima assoluta

____________________________________
Philip Glass opened the monographic week at the 'Futuro Presente'
Contemporary Arts Festival of Rovereto, held at the MART, with a tribute to
Allen
Ginsberg. The afternoon session already made clear his indirect and absolute
vision of music, reasserted in this inaugural concert, in which he was joined
by
Patti Smith. The concert was an ideal and slightly nostalgic journey in which
the dominant expressive tension came from poetic references chanted by the
voice of the American singer; she gave us Ginsberg's poems b and her own b
using her customary rough tenderness. The sequence kicked off with verses from
'Notes to the Future', written by Smith herself, and then introduced some of
Ginsberg's poems such as 'Wichita Votrex Sutra VI', 'On Cremation of Chogyam
Trungpa, Vidyadhara' and 'Magic Psalm'. During the intermezzo dedicated to
Smith the singer-songwriter, Glass - joined by Giovanni Sollima b performed
songs
such as 'Beneath the Southern Cross' and 'My Blakean Year', followed by an
intense tribute to a vintage De AndrC(. Glass is no Pollini at the piano b
songs performed included the first one from the 1980s' album 'Glassworks' and
the
more recent 'Musical Journey' and 'Etude 2 and 10' b but his style of
composition still represents a fixed point for the various musical styles of
the
last thirty years, and is clearly anchored to the oriental concept of
repetition that has pervaded his music since the mid 1970s. The numerous and
enthusiastic public was the one Glass looks for in these concerts: a mix of
those who
follow his music with a majority of 'popular' music enthusiasts. The
operation was a success.

There's a torrent of the complete Mother's Day
1979 Tower Theater broadcast up on Dime now
(ID=90797). The seeder claims that this is digitized
straight from a reel-ro-reel made of the original
FM broadcast, and is the complete set.

The complete Tower '79 show has been around for
a while (the vinyl "to the ones She Loves" did
not have a complete setlist.) and was even
torrented, but this is said to be a significant
upgrade, soundwise. Lineage:

Does anyone know in what city this show was recorded ?
She was in Rome the day before according to
http://setlists.pattismithlogbook.info/
Was this show also in Rome ?

I was about to archive a bunch of smaller Patti DVDs in PAL format on
a DVD when I noticed the info file for this show didn't have a city.

Artists Challenge Their Audiences, Creating a Sense of Discomfort
By BRADFORD MCKEE
Published: April 13, 2006

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/13/garden/13mbox2.html

IN a dim back gallery of the Triennale di Milano, the imposing museum
in Milan's city center, Patti Smith, the artist and punk godmother,
stood quietly, surveying what she described as a meditation room. She
and her friend the artist Marco Tirelli were wrapping up their
installation for a group show, "The Devil of Hearth and Home," timed
to coincide with the 45th International Furniture Fair.

The show, which was to open the following day, would feature 34 women
(plus Mr. Tirelli, thanks to his collaborator's insistence) presenting
their notions of domestic life. They included the artist Kiki Smith,
the Spanish video artist Lucia Gironis and the French designer Matali
Crasset, whose metal-and-wood garlands of flames occupied a central
position, creating a focus for the larger exhibition.

Patti Smith's version of domesticity involved a table and chair
sheathed in a rumpled cotton sheet on which she had scribbled
illegible fragments of poetry in pencil. A painting of a white sphere
in a black void by Mr. Tirelli hung in the background, on a dusky red
wall. "The red signifies sacrificial blood," Ms. Smith explained in a
near-whisper. "We are entering the season of the sacrifice," she said,
presumably referring to the Christian holy week.

Every year, while their more commercially minded colleagues exhibit
work at the furniture fair, a few designers and artists come to Milan
simply to vent or to show off. Some are well established, others
less so, but their installations tend to be similarly iconoclastic. If
much of the furniture at the city's fairgrounds and showrooms
reflected a preoccupation with comfort, the work of some of these
designers called attention to that by attempting to create a certain
discomfort.

"We live in a dangerous world," read the statement drafted by Droog
Design of Amsterdam, to describe the show assembled in a gallery next
to La Scala opera house. "Every day the media bring misery and threats
into our living rooms."

In response, the Droog designers created an escapist paradise called a
"Garden of Delight." Songbirds chirped softly over a sound system. On
a low picnic table, a white tablecloth by Maurice Scheltens displayed
burned-on shadows of chaotically arrayed dinnerware, napkins and
leaves. (One could only hope that the shadows were intended to suggest
a postprandial setting rather than a postnuclear one.)

Marcel Wanders redesigned a tree swing as a planting container with
ivy climbing up the ropes. And on the far side of the gallery, Susanne
Kessler and Petra Eichler erected a many-layered "forest" of
stencil-cut Tyvek paper, illuminated in various intense colors (while
I was there, the foliage had the hue of Bombay Sapphire gin).

In a 15th-century seminary in the next neighborhood over, the students
of the Dutch Design Academy Eindhoven abstained from that kind of
ilanthough not from black humorin their annual graduate exhibition.
The show, "Post-Mortem," was inspired by the death of a classmate,
Tessa Van Dam. In the installation by Hilde Koenders, "Bleeding Till
Death," 16 tulips were arranged across a table, each receiving a
transfusion of colored liquid from an intravenous drip bag.

The piece with the most currency, though, was Rogier Corbeau's "Bird
Influenza" wallpaper printed with what appeared to be electron
micrographs of viral particles.

The show created a lingering effect that took a few blocks' walk to
dissipate. Along the way, a poster on a sunlit cafe window advertised
an upcoming run of a 2001 play called "Xanax," by Angelo Longoni, and
a few doors down, another poster announced a performance of Mozart's
"Requiem" at the church of Santa Maria del Carmine, in observance of
the season of sacrifice.

And I waited so long to ge get it, it's no longer available
in the flesh, as I discovered last night. Any particularly
potent pearls of wisdom?
