This is a really interesting (and long!) article that I just discovered,
although it's more than a year old

It's about the economics of hits and non-hits in music and other kinds
of popular entertainment. No mentions of Patti, yet I find myself
thinking of her and other non-mainstream artists a lot while reading it.
