I'm just listening to these now and they're very cool.
Does anybody know an easy way to capture them from the web
to my hard drive?

Yeah... most browsers will allow you to just right click and choose Save
Target As in the context menu and save it somewhere you will remember on
your hard drive.

Yep, I was using Firefox and it wasn't there, but when I tried

These albums are also available on eMusic, a paid-download
service. On the plan I personally signed up with (they have several
tiers), the Verlaine costs me 20 cents per track, and the files
are VBR MP3s which come in at around 192 kbps.

If you hunt around, you can find various offers of 50 or even
100 free emusic.com downloads on a trial basis.

(And thanks to the other poster for the heads-up. Tom is
here in Philly tomorrow night. I had no idea!)

I really enjoyed listening to these. Thanks for posting.

On the first disc Tom sings, and the second one is just instrumental.
On the one where he sings, his singing is better than usual. But the
one I'm going to go out and get is the instrumental disc. It seems
quiet and not really rock, but very enjoyable.

Does anybody know where to get TV's tour schedule?

20 cents per track seems about right for MP3s, since they contain +/- 10% of
the information contained on a CD, which in turn still has artificial limits
that make it inferior to analogue. That's two steps backward now from the
music industry, all in the name of convenience. Has anyone on this list ever
compared an MP3 file to a CD (wav file) on a decent stereo? The difference
is pretty obvious. While there's something to be said for producing fewer
artifacts (our culture is drunk on producing STUFF - we're not "successful"
unless we produce more every year, right?), I also care about the quality of
the sound I'm buying (as well as the quality of the music - an even more
subjective area!).

Today is census day in Canada. Our government contracted our census out to
an American company, Lockheed Martin, which if I understand correctly is
mostly engaged in the production of weapons of mass destruction. That's
probably why I'm so cranky.

Quality is fast becoming a thing of the past. No one is really
surprised at slipshod "stuff" any longer, no matter what the product /
service. No one expects anything made today to last for any
considerable amount of time. Faster and cheaper is what the majority of
the public wants, quality really does not enter the picture to a great
extent.

Well, until Tom Verlaine invites me over to listen to
his master reel-to-reels, a CD (at least) will have
to do.

And it's about more than convenience, for me at least.

With eMusic, it's about supporting a model of DRM-free,
untethered downloads, which I get to keep forever and
ever (unless my backups fail, which they inevitably
will).

And maybe I don't want to spend $12.99 to find out I
really don't like "Around" all that much. And I agree
that Mp3s are somewhat less than great. For that reason,
the 20-cent pricepoint is one that is actually suitable
for me.

And no one has to give their work away for free.

And I get to hear a preview of the album. If I really
really like it, I will, as I have in the past, go on
to buy the full CD.

If you don't like the model, don't participate. And
I don't mean that flippantly. There's nothing "inevitable"
about higher and higher prices for crappier and
crappier "stuff", and it's always a good feeling to
be able to walk away from encouraging that rat race.
But this particular arrangement works for me right
here and now. YMMV.

I find pollstar.com to be reliable. It reveals that mid-June
will find him in Pittsburgh and Chicago. Went to see him
tonight. FAAAAB-ulous!!!!

(And after enduring his pretensions night after night opening
for Patti at the Bowery Ballroom in '98, I wasn't expecting
much.)

He's playing with three musicians behind him, including
one "Fred Smith" on bass (no, I don't know if it's THE
Fred Smith of the original Television, but FYI....)

I recognized three things all night (okay, well, four):

Tom Verlaine (guitar and vocals).

"Fred Smith" (again, I don't know if it was THE Fred
Smith, but he was almost as fat and bald as me).

"Kingdom Come" (was this a Television song? I only
recognized it because of David Bowie.)

Tom Verlaine's friggin' genius. Oh, man.

See. This. Show.

Thanks to the folks who posted here the heads-up about
Tom being on the road. I owe you.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only relict who feels that a buck (USD) to
download a song is really pushing the price point. Just can't see myself
doing it. Now at $0.20 a pop, I might devote a sawback every now and then
to getting some dls, hot and trendy or classic cuts, because I know I want
'em or just to check out. A buck just to find out the latest buzz is crap
is over my comfort level. .

My objection (other than cheapness;-) isn't so much the relative # of bits,
or quality, relative to a CD, it's the almost cost free distribution model.
In return for cutting out a lot of middlemen, not producing a mountain of
physical CDs, packaging, etc, not wasting gas transporting the product all
over the place, etc, it seems the consumer should get a bit of a break.

A question: what fidelity (kbps) of mp3's do find obviously
different/inferior to a standard wave file? I'm not even sure what's
standard for a commercial download, but over at archive.org they're
available in hi and lo fidelity.

on my copy of "A Heavy Rock & Roll" there are 8 seconds that are
repeated.

it's at the start of disc 1 track 9 ("Time Is On My Side"), between
0:04 and 0:12, then again between 0:12 and 0:20.

during both of these repeated pieces the vocals are:

"I'm mater--starting to materialize things out of the air now, one of
my many ha--one of my many a habits, yeah"

and then those vocals are repeated exactly in the next 8 seconds.

is this on everybody's copy of this boot? (I believe it is the boot
because it contains the boot's filler exactly as shown at
http://www.postmodern.com/%7Efi/pattipics/images/heavy2.jpg )

any help would be greatly appreciated; I'm preparing to seed this show
on Dime, and if this repeated piece is on everyone's copies, I plan to
edit it out before seeding it.

thanks in advance!

Don't miss the two sides of FCFT this weekend! (I love this band!
http://www.myspace.com/furcups)

Friday night FCFT rocks CBs Gallery for THE FEAST OF JOEY, in honor of
St. Joey Ramones' birthday. The show is part of an all day, all night
orgy of devotional fervor. Join us after the punk pilgrimage and
processional for a show at CBs Gallery that features a feast, bands,
and a briefly open mic for DIY Ramones covers. So paint some skinny
jeans on already, and get ready to show us your power chords.

And Saturday night we change it up with an electro set at Flux
Factory, as part of their WORKS ON PAPER show. Flux Factory will
present paper confections, berries, bands, and the bazaar. We'll
bring the sharpies for all you budding artistes, and will provide a
canvas of gowns.

More info about each show below. Hope to see you this weekend!!!

xoxo,
FCFT

The celebration starts at noon when the Hungry March Band will lead a

(where they all went to school), to Tompkins Square Park. According
to the HMB there'll be "a Saint Joey statue mounted on an ornate
platform carried by disciples, self-flagellating punk martyrs,
mystics, and heretics." Need we say more? If you want to get in on
the parade or the processional the Hungry March Band wants you!

At 8pm, the Feast of St. Joey begins at CBs Gallery and features the
DIY Ramones open mic, HMB, Deva, The Ramoons, FCFT, and a potluck

share, and a percentage of the door is going to the Lymphoma Research

Flux Factory began as a collective living space in 1994, in an old
spice factory in Williamsburg. About four years later, with a new
stage built and twice as many members, the Flux Factory living room
evolved into a site for art events and performances of all kinds. The
goal of the Flux art collective is to create a forum where Flux
artists can collaborate with each other as well as others in an
experimental lab that produces new works. Flux Factory is also a
public and community space in itself. For more info check out their
site.

It's D.C., from Monday, rather than Philly on Tuesday,
but hey, you can't have everything. :)

Reading the taper's comments, it sounds like the crowd
was, tragically, as sparse in DC as it was in Philly
the night after.

I tried this but I can't get onto Dime because they are not
accepting any new users. I had never done it before but was
going to try it out. Are there any plans to put this up on
a web site :-) Thanks,

- Mitch

Last I heard, Dime is taking new users only as old ones leave. They had 100,000 users at one point, and I think the story is that their servers couldn't handle that many.

I've read people on other lists, saying that it might take a day or two of trying, but eventually one can sign up.

what was the bitrate of the digital broadcast/webcast of Patti 7/3/01
Vienna?

(it cirulates as an FM broadcast, but appears not to be per
frequency/spectral analysis; if the bitrate is known I may be able to
seed it on Dime.)

thanks!

this is correct. Their servers started to overload
due to the sheer number of people accessing them, so
they capped it at 100,000.

They clean up old, idle accounts daily, and from comments
that people post there it seems that if you're tenacious,
and keep at it, you can get signed up eventually.

Members of the U.S. "Baby Boom" Turn 60
Generation that defined American youth culture faces retirement

By Elizabeth Kelleher
Washington File Staff Writer

[snip] The generation's leading edge, which includes Presidents Bill
Clinton and George W. Bush, first lady Laura Bush, tycoon Donald
Trump, director Steven Spielberg and punk-rocker Patti Smith [only
mention], turns 60 in 2006.

"Boomers broke the mold in every earlier life cycle," said demographer
William Frey of the Brookings Institution. They will approach old age
differently too.

In fact, they plan to skip it. In a poll by research firm Yankelovich
Inc., boomers were asked, "At what age does old age start?" Their
answer: three years after the average American dies. [snip]

The exhibition is impressive, a lot more work than i expected. Patti's work is very interesting but my fingers are cold so typing is not easy right now. JOhn Smith gave a nice introduction to the work encouraging people on the guided tour to join in (fair play to those who did, it was very interesting listening to you all talk). I had a ticket to the public interview today but decided not to go (how torn i was) as i have a big day tomorrow and needed to get back to Dublin to prepare.

The gig at the gallery was good. I was one of the first to arrive at the gallery, but in the space of time it took me to go to the toilet a queue formed and my seat was not as close to the stage as i had wanted. However, the venue was so small that every seat was great.

When we walked in, there was a grand piano, one accoustic guitar, and two stools on stage. I could hear people speculating; many thought it would be Lenny kaye that would accompany Patti although i did hear some people wonder about Oliver Ray. Maybe the piano was a bit of a giveaway. I don't recall there being too many gigs with just Tony and Patti so this was special . Tony brought a guitar on stage with him. (i may not have hte order of things right)

Patti explained her connectoin with Yeats (having written a paper on him when she was about 18 she promised that one day she would travel to Sligo to see his grace, and now she has;-)

Beneath the SOuthern Cross. Tony and Patti on guitar. There was something a bit out of tune or out of key or something wiht the guitars and Patti seemed apologetic but then realised that it was Tony and not her. She thought this a momentous occasion and said that she couldn't wait to tell the rest of hte band. She said that Tony is always in tune (in fact, she said, he is the only one of them ever in tune and that he tunes everyone elses guitars for them).

They moved into Grateful, with Patti expressing how grateful we all are having known or heard Jerry Garcia.

People Have The Power - spoken
The Jackson Song - Tony on Piano SHe introduced this saying how much Jackson hates it.
Trampin' - Tony on piano. Patti spoke all about Marian Anderson and the Daughters of hte American Revolution and Eleanor Roosevelt.
Mother Rose - Tony on piano. from two great women to another one - "my mother". This was rather lovely.
Peaceable Kingdom - Tony on piano. "I hope you like it"
I'm so lonesome i could cry - Tony and Patti on guitar. They had not planned on playing this song but the music playing before she came on reminded her of this song. She introduced it as "Tony's penance" but having messed up guitar and lyrics a few times she finished the song laughing, saying "that was bad - maybe it was my penance"
My Blakean Year - Both on guitar.
Dancing Barefoot - Tony on guitar. great performance.

Wing - Tony on guitar. Patti introduced this as the song written for Jesse and that she does not hate it.
Because The NIght - Patti encouraged the audience to sing this one with her as Tony played hte piano.

There was some poetry thrown in too; i remember the following were read (but don't know what order or where they fit in):

Wilderness
The geometry blinked ruin unimaginable
Death of a tramp
The writer's song

Don't remember anythng else, but i may have forgotten.
GARRET

I just rented the movie New York Doll. I may have even heard about
it on babel-list, not sure. It's about Arthur Kane, the Dolls' bass
player.
It's a really great movie, both fun and sad. I think anyone who likes
the Dolls would enjoy seeing it. Also anyone who used to be a wild
teenager and now is getting older, which probably includes a lot of us
:-)

I'd love to trade for Patti's 5/12/79 Amherst (the afternoon) show on
disc.

(what other shows on that tour did Patti open for the Grateful Dead?)

thanks!

When art met punk / The Warhol takes us back to the messy creativity
of New York in the '70s

Thursday, May 25, 2006
By Mary Thomas, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06145/692910-42.stm

It's uncanny how quickly a visitor drops back three decades once
inside "The Downtown Show: The New York Scene, 1974-84," which rolls
open its doors at The Andy Warhol Museum Saturday.

Part artwork, part archive, part titillation, part nostalgia, this is
as close a visit to the era as you can get, or maybe would want. It
will speak directly to those who lived it as well as to the younger
generations that have granted the period mythological status.

The cast is star-studded, including Patti Smith, Keith Haring, Nam
June Paik, Jenny Holzer, Richard Hell, Carolee Schneemann, David
Wojnarowicz, Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Vito Acconci, Karen
Finley, Robert Mapplethorpe, Cindy Sherman. You get the idea.

Artists represented are a checklist of the seminal and/or the famed,
the living and the missing.

"AIDS is the spectre that kind of hangs over this show," says John
Smith, Warhol assistant director for collections and research, who
will leave the museum next month to become director of the Smithsonian
Institution's Archives of American Art. "It hit a lot of these artists
either during their prime or before they were able to achieve it."

The decade was bracketed politically, Smith says, by Watergate and the
end of the Summer of Love, and the identification and naming of the
AIDS crisis.

The exhibition was organized by the Grey Art Gallery and Fales Library
and Special Collections at New York University.

It was curated by the perennially hip and knowing Carlo McCormick,
Paper magazine senior editor and popular culture critic, who'll
conduct a tour of the exhibition at noon Sunday.

With approximately 175 artists represented through more than 375
paintings, sculptures, drawings, videos and photographs, the show's
more a celebration of the concentrated dynamic than of any individual.
Also displayed are more than 70 items from the Fales Library rare book
and manuscript collection, including posters, artists' journals and
exhibition announcements.

The exhibition seemed a good match for The Warhol, Smith says. It has
a preponderance of archival materials, it has a great mix of film and
video material, and it offers many programming possibilities. "It's a
great collective look at that period -- what we like to do," he says.

There's also a connection with Andy Warhol.

The way the artists were moving back and forth among disciplines -- a
painter is also in a rock band is also doing performance -- is a sort
of Warholian idea, Smith says. "There's a fluidity in how one was
defining oneself in that period that continues to be an interest of
young artists [today]."

SoHo and the Lower East Side were then affordable for young and/or
experimental artists. "There were amazing spaces in which to live for
very little money. That kind of creative activity is now being forced
out of Manhattan to different parts of New York."

Interestingly, although Warhol influenced young artists in a
significant way during those years, his own reputation as an artist
was such that he was hard pressed to get an exhibition in New York,
Smith says. Artists trying to emulate Warhol were creating their own
"Silver Factories, if you will." But Warhol was in crisis at that
time.

In the mid- and late 1970s Warhol was not taken seriously, Smith says.
It was his work with Jean-Michel Basquiat in the early 1980s that
returned him to the spotlight.

"I think [the mid-1970s] were really conflicted years for Warhol,"
Smith says. "The art world had changed. It was the height of
Minimalism, Conceptual Art. Warhol wasn't the name on the tip of
everyone's tongue."

The later artists in the "Downtown Show," Smith says, were not only
acting on the influences of Warhol, but they were also acting against
the formality of Minimalism. They were saying "art can be messy and
art doesn't have to have so many rules."

The range of the exhibition is reflected in the eight sections it's
divided into: "Interventions," exploring the connection between the
proliferation of nonprofit exhibition sites and artworks engaging
Downtown settings (which may have particular relevance to contemporary
Pittsburgh, where storefront art is spreading and the monthlong
live-in performance "Looking In, Looking Out," currently at 922 Penn
Ave., addresses living and the cultural scene Downtown -- Pittsburgh,
that is); "Broken Stories," new structuring of narrative by visual
artists, filmmakers and writers; "De-Signs," investigating advertising
strategies; "Salon de Refuse," the "trash culture" that challenged
hierarchies; "Body Politics," sexuality and identity politics;
"Sublime Time," the new sublime post-Minimalism; "The Portrait
Gallery," images of key figures; and "The Mock Shop," re-creating the
stores that critiqued consumer culture by offering the likes of
low-cost multiples.

"The importance of this show is not so much that it's a collection of
masterpieces," Smith says. "It's to give one a sense of what a vibrant
and exciting period this was and also how we're still feeling the
legacy of that period, that time.

"Also the way the work of artists finds its way into popular culture
-- using popular culture, but also having a dramatic effect on popular
culture."

I have auds of both the Dead show and Patti's opener that day. (Not sure
what time of day it was.) This is the show with Patti's famous little bit
about wandering out from backstage at an earlier Dead show (during a long
instrumental, drawn by the microphone) then getting dragged off ... imagine
if she'd been allowed to
cut loose with a babelogue :-) Here's the Patti info:

Disk 1
(Patti Smith Group)
01. Redondo Beach
02. Mr.Tambourine Man
03. 25th Floor
04. It's So Hard
05. Patti's Grateful Dead Fillmore East Story
06. Jailhouse Rock
07. Because the Night
08. Seven Ways Of Going
09. Gloria/cut
Disk 1:
AUD LINEAGE UNKNOWN > CASSETTE > M-AUDIO TRANSIT > COOL EDIT > CD WAVE
EDITOR > FLAC

I have no idea what "M-AUDIO TRANSIT" signifies ;-).

Right now it's in flac (lossless compressed) format, both Dead and Patti on
a single DVD. The MD5's check out, but I haven't had a chance to listen to
it yet. I'm copying it to the hard drive as I type and will give it at
least a spot check in the next day or few. I'd be happy to set up trades,
either as flac or audio CD.
[A bit later ... the sound quality is ok if you're used to traded cassettes.
Some tape hiss, but at least I find it listenable. Haven't listened tothe
Dead sets yet.]

I'm pretty sure this was the only show Patti opened for the Dead.

Here's an answer:

  http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Transit-main.html

I use another of their 24/96 products - a PCI card - in an
oldish system I dedicated to music. They make nice stuff at
a semi-reasonable price if you're thinking about getting a
sound card that isn't the $9.99 Soundblaster special from
Staples.

This might be our Patti or it might be the other one.

If it's our Patti how about if she read the Declaration of Independence
too?
