Patti is back in the UK this coming weekend to appear at the
Latitude Festival. She's also returning in September for an event
at the Tate Modern in London - Friday, 8 September 2006 at 7.00
pm. Tickets are already on sale.

The event at the Tate Modern is billed as "Still Moving: Patti
Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe: Performance with words and
music by Patti Smith", and it includes the screening of two
short Mapplethorpe films "Still Moving" (1978) and "Lady" (1984).
Patti appears in the first these, whilst Lisa Lyon is in the
second one. It is also intended to show the 1988 BBC
documentary about Mapplethorpe which was directed by Nigel
Finch.

This has all been arranged to coincide with an exhibition of
photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe at the Alison Jacques
Gallery, in London, from 8 September to 7 October 2006
(www.alisonjacquesgallery.com/forthcoming.php).

Kind regards

Syd Barrett, founder of Pink Floyd, dies

LONDON - Syd Barrett, the troubled genius who
co-founded Pink Floyd but spent his last years in
reclusive anonymity, has died, a spokeswoman for the
band said Tuesday. He was 60.

The spokeswoman b who declined to give her name until
the band made an official announcement b confirmed
media reports that he had died. She said Barrett died
several days ago, but she did not disclose the cause
of death. Barrett had suffered from diabetes for many
years.

Barrett co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965 with
David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright, and
wrote many of the band's early songs. The group's
jazz-infused rock made them darlings of the London
psychedelic scene, and the 1967 album "The Piper at
the Gates of Dawn" b largely written by Barrett, who
also played guitar b was a commercial and critical
hit.

However, Barrett suffered from mental instability,
exacerbated by his use of LSD. His behavior grew
increasingly erratic, and he left the group in 1968 b
five years before the release of Pink Floyd's most
popular album, "Dark Side of the Moon." He was
replaced by David Gilmour.

Barrett released two solo albums b "The Madcap Laughs"
and "Barrett" b but soon withdrew from the music
business altogether.

He spent much of the rest of his life living quietly
in his hometown of Cambridge, England, where he was a
familiar figure, often seen cycling or walking to the
corner store.

Despite his brief career, Barrett's fragile, wistful
songs influenced many musicians, from David
Bowie b who covered the Barrett track "See Emily Play"
b to the other members of Pink Floyd, who recorded the
album "Wish You Were Here" as a tribute to their
troubled bandmate.

The band spokeswoman said a small, private funeral
would be held.

FYI - Just out in Seattle! Local radio station KEXP (kexp.org) has just
released their second live-in-studio compilation with money going to the
station to support programming. Featured is an in-studio performance of
Patti doing 'People Have The Power'. Most local record stores are carrying
the disc, including Easy Street Records - 206 /691-EASY (No, I do not work
for them.)

Organisers 'ecstatic' after Latitude festival
The Suffolk party will be back next year
The first-ever Latitude bash has been declared a
resounding success by 'ecstatic' festival boss Melvin
Benn.

And organisers have confirmed that the contemporary
arts event - headlined this year by Snow Patrol,
Antony and the Jonsons and Mogwai - would return for a
second year.

Mean Fiddler boss Benn said: "Ecstatic. Absolutely
ecstatic about the inaugural Latitude festival. Far
too many highlights to list them all but the three
headliners blew me away as did Patti Smith, who spent
the whole weekend in Southwold discovering her
ancestral roots.

"Rob Newman captivated everyone in the comedy tent and
them was captivated himself with Guilty Pleasures. The
Royal Court Theatre making their first-ever festival
performances enchanting the audiences and the
Literature and Poetry tents, which everyone doubted
would work, stormed the weekend as I knew they would.
Being read to at a festival; how absolutely
delightful. The art of storytelling coming through on
so many stages but especially those two.

"The site, the lake, the woods, the deck chairs, the
punting in the gondolas all added to an extraordinary
weekend for me. I haven't come down from it yet."

The festival, held at Henham Park in Suffolk, was
attended by 12,000 people.

JEANNE D'ARC

Patti Smith and friends will present an evening of poetry and son that pays

Queering Classic Love Songs
by Christie Keith, July 26, 2006

http://www.afterellen.com/Music/2006/7/classicsongs.html

[snip] Along with those better known boy-to-girl cover songs are a few
gems that, due to age or genre, might be less familiar to lesbian
audiences. Some, like Patti Smith's "Gloria," are overt love songs to
a woman; others, like the Indigo Girls' rendition of Bob Dylan's
"Along the Watchtower" or Etheridge's hot cover of "Son of a Preacher
Man," are not. And some, like the Raincoats' cover of the Kinks'
"Lola," are just impossible to categorize.

But if it's lesbian love you're looking for, there's no better place
to find it than in between these covers. Here's a look at the Top 10
queered covers of heterosexual love songs. [snip]

1. "Gloria" by Patti Smith
You know this isn't going to be much like the Van Morrison original
when proto-punk rocker Patti Smith sneers, "Jesus died for somebody's
sins, but not mine" as the opening line. Released in 1975 on her debut
album Horses, "Gloria" interweaves Smith's own lyrics with Morrison's,
turning his love song into a story of Smith's sexual obsession with a
woman named Gloria. It's erotic, wild, and hard, and possibly the most
frankly sexual lesbian rock song ever recorded.

[I don't know why but this made me feel a bit better today after
hearing about the WA St Supreme Court's upholding The Defense of
Marrage Act here. (It also helped by an ad on their site I discovered:
http://www.fakegaynews.com/ - because real gay news is too damn
depressing.)]

unfolding peace

Sometimes we forget....though I still morn heavily for all the ground
lost upon the emergence of HIV/AIDS (and, just recently especially,
too for the lost generation - for whom I feel we survive as
witness.), which also then diverted us so at such a critical juncture
Maybe that is why that song and what Patti did with it still has such
power/is so affecting.

btw, this morning a 15 yo heterosexual male from Vancouver WA made me
bawl finally when he called into NWCN[ews]. His statements help make
it _not_ hurt so much. (I've a feeling they'll pick-it up for later
coverage and perhaps put it on their web-site; it even took the anchor
back left her speechless for a beat, then asked "how old are you
again?")

So, I have to cherish that it is better, will be for this guy's
generation, and as the people who said they would continue "the work"
said, will be for those following us.

> if marriage is so great, why do they need a bill to defend it?

Especially ironic too as "they" tout monogamy to curb the spread of HIV.

Soccer teams need place to call home

[snip] The property, on Tacoma Boulevard, is on the border of the two
municipalities. It was purchased by the county with Open Space funds
and then given to the city of Woodbury for soccer fields.

The former Hoedown Hall once featured square dancing. Later, it was
frequented by local rocker Patti Smith, who went on to record the hits
"Gloria" and "Because the Night."

In 2001, the county bought the land from Smith for $320,000. [snip]

Church Still Conjures A Psychedelic Spell

By CURTIS ROSS The Tampa Tribune, Jul 28, 2006

http://www.tbo.com/entertainment/fridayextra/MGB4AKAA4QE.html

The Church missed its shot at the golden ring of pop stardom. Instead,
more than 25 years after forming, they're still going strong.

"I guess it's a case of our being in a bit of a unique position,"
bassist-singer-lyricist Steve Kilbey says by telephone from Santa
Barbara, Calif., the morning after opening night on the quartet's
current tour.

"We go on making records, and nobody puts any pressure on us to be
anything in particular," Kilbey says. "We still love what we do. We
don't sort of have anybody saying you should be this or that. We're
under the radar."

The band was far closer to the radar's center in 1988 when the
shimmering "Under the Milky Way," from "Starfish," became its one and
so far only U.S. Top 40 hit.

The band wanted ex-Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones to produce the
follow-up. Its management wanted to play it safe by sticking with
"Starfish" producers Greg Ladanyi and Waddy Wachtel.

Management prevailed and the result was 1990's "Gold Afternoon Fix,"
an album rated as mediocre by critics, fans and band alike. The
Church's commercial momentum was lost.

"You don't get that many chances," Kilbey says with a sigh. "By the
time we came with the next album [1992's "Priest = Aura"], the record
we should have made after 'Starfish,' it was kind of too late.

"Suddenly you had to be from Seattle and wearing a flannel shirt,"
Kilbey quips. (Funny, I was buying their cd's at the time. but I
totally also know what he means, - it even made me cool, you kinda had
to live here at the time to know.)

The Church was as unlikely to follow grunge as any other trend. It's
been going its own way since Kilbey, guitarists Marty Willson-Piper
and Peter Koppes and original drummer Nick Ward (soon replaced by
Richard Ploog) formed in 1980 in the aftermath of punk.

The group was more influenced by psychedelia and the ringing guitars
of '60s bands such as The Byrds than the rama-lama power chords of
punk.

Kilbey also cites "the glam thing of the '70s, bands like Bebop Deluxe
(I'd forgetten about them!) that were just before punk," as well as
punk-era explorers Patti Smith and Television, as touchstones for The
Church's sound.

Smith's drummer Jay Dee Daugherty, in fact, joined The Church for a
while in the '90s, replacing Ploog. Tim Powles now handles the skins.

"Punk was great. I liked it at the time but it's not the kind of music
I wanted to play," Kilbey says. "But there wasn't much to do after
'Anarchy in the U.K.' You'd immediately painted yourself into an
artistic corner." (I love it!)

The Church avoided that fate as its most recent album, this year's
"Uninvited, Like the Clouds," attests. The band still can conjure a
gauzy psychedelic spell but it can also bristle with aggression, as on
opening track "Block."

Besides, punk-level amplification would relegate half The Church to
the touring sidelines.

"Tim and I both have tinnitus," a persistent ringing in the ear,
Kilbey says. It's one reason The Church's current U.S. tour is
acoustic. "I don't think we could handle five weeks of electric."

Movie Review of "In My Father's Den," Timothy Chow.

http://www.mediablvd.com/magazine/Magazine-Home/MBMag_20060420209.html

[I'm really curious as to the sybolism to the "father's den," more
specifially the Patti collection I suppose. ne1 seen it? read the
book? (this been discussed b4?)]

This movie took me about two years to find and I just finished
watching it ten minutes ago, but even with those built-up
expectations, I'm pretty much keeled over right now from its emotional
punch. The artistry in its prose and the manner of the storytelling is
extremely elegant and powerful, and I can only hope that the book in
which the movie is based upon is equal to, if not better than, this
film.

In My Father's Den is a 2004 New Zealand and British co-production
that tells the story of a war-weary photo-journalist, Paul (Matthew
Macfadyen), who returns back home to his native New Zealand for his
father's funeral, 17 years after he initially abandoned his home. His
sudden reappearance stirs up feelings among the small-town folk, first
from his surprised brother, Andrew (Colin Moy), and then later his
ex-girlfriend whom he left behind (Jodie Rimmer).

At first unsure about his place and role in this small seaside
community, he considers immediately leaving, but stays when convinced
by his brother to remain for a few more weeks, just to sort out the
will and sell their father's house, etc. It is also during this time
that he makes the acquaintance of Celia (Emily Barclay), a young
16-year-old girl who is smart, literary and desperate to leave this
small town home of hers. Seeing a bit of himself in her when he was
her age, they strike up a friendship, writing poems, having picnics
and visiting Paul's father's den for the collection of Patti Smith
records.

Then one day in the middle of winter, she disappears mysteriously.
Paul is the last one to have seen her after one of their weekly Sunday
chats, and after weeks of not finding her, suspicion naturally falls
upon him that he did something bad to her. As the story unfolds and
the truth surfaces, Paul is forced to recognize the choices that he
made 17 years before still continue to haunt and linger in this small
town, and that who you set out to be isn't always who you become.

Raw and emotionally honest, the film does a great job at exposing the
layers of hurt and betrayal that forced a young teenage boy to leave
his home and create an entirely new life halfway on the other side of
the world. Each character shows deep emotion, as if they're real
people and not just caricatures - feeling and hurting and still
hoping. The interaction between Celia and Paul feels genuine, and
though the story gets a little bogged down near the end (its only
specific fault), the scriptwriter always keeps strict control on the
characters and they're still always believable.

Similarly, cinematographer Stuart Dryburgh and the art direction team
do an amazing job with the filming, showing the vulnerability of the
characters in their artistic close-up shots set amidst the long shots
of the remote New Zealand landscape. The pacing is also excellent, and
though it's hard to make a mystery thriller intriguing when it's this
slow, the movie somehow pulls it off. By planting snippets of the past
with the present, and mixing the more recent present with the actual
present, there's an interesting puzzle that constantly engages the
viewers, coaxing them to come up with what happened.

Though the answer becomes a little obvious two thirds of the way in,
you can't help but admire a movie that does it this well and with such
style. A remarkable piece of work from director Brad McGann. 4 = out
