[snip] GAZETTE: Is it still the six-piece configuration?

DG: Yeah. We've had to make a change unfortunately, the bass
player's father is very ill, and Robbie was a huge participant in
making this album. Rob Malone. His father's very ill and he's going to
have to stay behind and look after him. So we've had to bring in a
friend of mine who plays with Patti Smith, amongst other people.

GAZETTE: Oh Tony ...

DG: Tony Shanahan. He did some gigs when Robbie's wife was having a
baby. Robbie's having a bit of a year. So he's learned the songs
before. He's got a different style he's a bit more rock. He's got a
great voice. That's one thing about Tony the backing vocals could be
excellent. So we're going to have to hit the ground running with him
just a little bit. Four straight shows: massive Red Rocks, Newport
Folk Festival, New York Randalls Island, and I don't know the next
one. It might in fact be Montreal.

He's a great boy, and the great thing about Tony is he picks things up
really quick. You can just trust him; he keeps it simple. So it'll be
a slightly different vibe in the band, and a couple of songs will have
to go, because he doesn't play upright bass, which is a bit of a sound
on the record. So Now and Always will be off which is a shame,
because that's been a bit of a monster track. Unless we've got some
time when we can try to work something out really different with the
song. So we're suddenly faced with this conundrum. To be honest, the
last few months have been full of these strange, unexpected
disruptions: people getting sick, ducking out. We've had to adapt in a
rather hasty way. But it can be good. I mean, look on the positive
side, because these are the final shows for this record, and it's been
a great tour. It would be a shame if the last few shows were anything
less than top-notch, really. [snip]
