I had a Patti/CBGB's ticket in my shopping cart - TWICE! -
but the fucking website kept kicking me back to the reserve
page.

By the time ticketweb.com took my credit card info for
about the fifth time, it said no tickets were available
to fill the order in my cart.

I wonder if it was overwhelmed with true fans who want to see
the shows, which would be sort of cool (although sad for the
people on babel-list who missed out) or overwhelmed with scalper
types who think they can resell the tickets and make a profit,
which would really suck.

These were all will-call sales only - for entry,
you have to show up with ID and the card used
to make the purchase, and one of you (obviously)
has to be that person.

I'm sorry to hear that. Although I did get tickets, it wasn't because of ticketweb's
stellar performance. It also kept kicking me back until, finally, it allowed me to process
my order. Even then, once I went to finalize my order, it again kicked me back and
gave me an 'error page' screen also. I kept trying to no avail until I finally
gave up....It wasn't until I checked my email that I realized that the order
must have gone through as I had a confirmation waiting for me....

here's hoping that others got lucky also...

Probably it will be a mix of true fans and those who want to be in on a
historic moment.

And there's those of us who fall into both categories.

I was all set to book a flight from SF....but no tix, alas

J, who first saw Patti in 1974 with only Lenny and Jay Dee....and would have
loved to see her in the venue that helped get her started.

Ann Demeulemeester: She Dreams of Cloth
Renata Espinosa
October 04th, 2006

http://www.fashionwiredaily.com/first_word/runway/article.weml?id=632

For Ann Demeulemeester's 20th anniversary, she got a very special
birthday present: a poem spoken from backstage by legend punk
chanteuse Patti Smith as models solemnly processed down the runway
wearing Demeulemeester's poetic vision for next spring, which she
presented on Tuesday, October 3rd in a warehouse on the edge of Paris.

"I started my first show with a poem of hers, 'Wave,' and she invented
one on the spot [today]," said Demeulemeester post-show, as the
stunned throngs congratulated her for creating such a poignant moment
in a mostly humdrum Spring 2007 fashion season.

"Tattered coat and your scattered hopes and your silver dreams,
unfettered, unspoiled, and she sees lace, white eyelet cloth,
billowing into the sea...Easter...Muslim nets form tents. She dreams
of cloth...silver charms," intoned Smith as the soundtrack of a
baroque harpischord gave way to her hypnotic words inspired by
Demeulemeester's collection, the soulful manifestation of a rock
star's inner life. It's an anti-fashion message that has been
consistent throughout Demeulemeester's career. [snip]

Patti Has Priorites

Names & faces
Patti Smith: Because the plaque
October 2, 2006

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061002/ENT07/610020314

This from the New Statesman of London: Former Detroit rocker Patti
Smith says her current priorities are the environment, the antiwar
movement and good dental hygiene.

In London to launch an exhibition of portraits by the late Robert
Mapplethorpe -- the controversial ex-Detroit photographer who was her
best friend -- she noted on the
latter point: "Take care of your teeth, because when you get older,
it's such a drag. There's nothing worse than feeling creative, wanting
to do stuff and not being able to because you've got teeth problems
and you don't have enough money to take
care of them." Can you say, "Brusha, brusha, brusha?"

Nation must address inequity in income (only P's quote)
Gerald Benson of Fort Collins

http://www.coloradoan.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061002/OPINION04/610020306

Mid-term elections are coming soon, and citizens might consider the
thought of poet, musician and activist Patti Smith: "The people have
the power to turn the world around." Will they do it? Are citizens
aware of their power and the awesome responsibility they have for one
another's happiness? People are endowed by their creator with certain
unchallengeable rights to a happy life. Voters have the power!

In his second inaugural address, President Roosevelt redefined the
role of government during the Great Depression. "We are determined to
make every American the object of his country's interest and concern."
He described the state of the nation when he was elected in 1932,
"Here is the challenge to our democracy. In this nation, I see
millions of its citizens - who at this very moment are denied the
greater part of what the lowest standards of today call the
necessities of life. I see millions of families trying to live on
incomes so meager that the pall of family disaster hangs over them day
by day." And he goes on to identify the cause and the solution to that
Great Depression. "The test of our programs is not whether we add more
to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide
enough for those who have too little." To have so much poverty and its
associated misery in a land of such immense wealth is morally
incomprehensible. Greater income equality must be an essential goal of
government.

Walter Heller had persuaded President Kennedy that poverty is not only
inhumane but it is a drag on the economy that a nation can't afford.
Action had to be taken on economic grounds to reduce poverty by
increasing the incomes of poor people. Shortly after the death of
President Kennedy, President Johnson invited Heller to meet with him
and review past economic planning. The concept of a War on Poverty was
born. It was an amazing success. In the six years, 1964-1970, poverty
declined from 36 million people to 26 million, only to increase again
under new administrations (Hubert Humphrey, The Education of a Public
Man, 1976, p. 411).

Today the U.S. has substantial income inequality. The top 20 percent
of citizens still receive half (49 percent) of the income, the lower
20 percent receive less than 5 percent and most of them live in
poverty. The top 5 percent of citizens have as much income as the
bottom 50 percent. Change is needed! (Patterson, Thomas, American
Democracy, 2001, p. 535)

Forbes magazine publishes the wealth of the 400 richest citizens in
the United States. The data reported October 2005 is that these 400
citizens have a combined wealth of $1.13 trillion, an increase of $125
billion over their wealth in 2004. All but 26 members are
billionaires. Concentration of wealth at the top is increasing and
more people have too little.

The late John Kenneth Galbraith, economist, when asked for his
greatest hope for America replied, "My greatest hope would be for a
more equitably rewarded people and added from the bottom up" as
opposed to a trickle-down theory.

Meanwhile, the child poverty rate has nearly doubled during the last
five years in Fort Collins. In one elementary school, 90 percent of
the children live in poverty as defined by eligibility for free lunch.
Businesses are raising money to buy warm clothing for these children.
Each year, the Poudre School District identifies and serves about 600
homeless children. These conditions for children exist in one of the
best communities in the United States!

Voters have an opportunity to change the lives of children across
America by increasing income equality.

Gerald Benson of Fort Collins is an emeritus professor of Colorado
State University

PARIS, October 3, 2006 "Ann is my friend. She makes clothes that
make me feel like myself. The clothes of my dreams, of my youth." So
said Patti Smith, before loping off backstage to think out the
improvised voice-over she'd promised as part of Ann Demeulemeester's
show. What followed were 20 of those good Demeulemeester minutes in
which the idea of running away to be a full-time member of her
tousle-haired gang of rock/poet people suddenly seems completely
compelling. Call it what you likea look, a formula, a uniformthere
is always some new slant in the layers of dark, slouchy, traily coats,
jackets, shirts, pants, and skirts in Demeulemeester's repertoire. As
a fashion shortcut to looking elegantly wasted without drugs, it
works.

For spring, the designer's injection of change was in the flyaway
floppiness of cutaway jackets, the fine ticking stripes used for
vests, and the way the air-blown, ombri-dyed shirts were loosely tied
to bunch at the waist. Underneath, there were leg solutions that,
blessedly, did not involve a single pair of leggings. One was a
bias-pieced skinny fluted pant; the other, slouchy, wide pants riding
low on suspenders. All these were marched out on another great-looking
antidote to a trend that has run amok this season: non-platform,
wickedly pointy wedge boots with an ankle strap. That gave the models
an easy stride, rather than the tottering gait that's been slowing
down other runway proceedings, but as the Ann-gang whipped by, the
details flashed: pearls strung into spiderweb vests, and assortments
of long, metal chains slung as necklaces. Demeulemeester's is a
personal universe, to be surebut it's as authentic and believable as
they come.

This must be the 30th anniversary of the release of Radio Ethiopia
around about now. Does anyone know the exact date? I know it came
out in the UK in October 1976. This is still my favourite of all
Patti's albums. Great music and that terrific cover (what Patti
called her Nadia Comaneci look).

Kind regards

Thanks, Trevor :)

You can find Steadman's art on a LOT of labels from the Boony Doone
website (one of the founders of the Rhone Rangers) at:

        http://www.bonnydoonvineyard.com/

    Also, RalphieBoy's home page is:

        http://www.ralphsteadman.com/

One particular bottling of a French wine (most of Boony Doone is homegrown
in California) had a re-writing of a certain epic poem which began,

"I have seen the best minds of my generation ruined by over-oakage..."

I would like to know if anyone knows an e-mail or something that is to contact Patti. I searched in her website something for fan's contact, but I didn't find anything. If someone knows, please answer me!

Thanks!

I'm not sure how many, and there may not be an authoritative count. Apart
from any autographed copies that were directly distributed, she may have
signed others. For example, some were sold at Rather Ripped Records in
Berkeley following an in-store appearance in fall 1974...the store may well
have had her autograph the white sleeves while she was there.

Final Show At NYC's CBGB To Be Broadcast Live By Sirius Disorder Channel

http://www.radioink.com/HeadlineEntry.asp?hid=135433&pt=todaysnews

Sirius Satellite Radio will broadcast the last performance at the
legendary New York City rock club CBGB, featuring Patti Smith, on
Sunday, October 15 at 9 PM ET on the Sirius Disorder channel.

The famed club is closing following unsuccessful rent negotiations
with its landlord. News of its demise has prompted worldwide press
coverage and sparked several campaigns to save the musical landmark.
Tickets for the final show with Smith were sold out in 8 minutes,
according to CBGB's founder and owner, Hilly Kristal.

ps: sirius has a free 3 day trial - if we can manage to fool them as
new users who did not listen to the Bowery Show. Anyone know where to
get a "promo code" to use?

The news was also posted on http://www.punknews.org/article/20232 and
there is a forum thread that has begun, but at this writing there are
no clues how to be sure to get a sign on.

Re Iggy and Ivan Kral

I shot Iggy, Ivan Kral, Brian James of the Damned and Glen Matlock of
Pistols at San Francisco's Waldorf, December, 1979. A shot of Iggy
and Glen will be in my solo book from Rizzoli next year, "Before
Hardcore."

The question is: anyone know how to email Ivan, Brian or Glen? I'd
love to send jpgs. I have several lovely postcards from Ivan when I
first met him on Patti's Horses, Radio Ethopia and other tours,
starting in Jan 1976 through June 1978. I shot Damned when they first
came to LA as well (April 1977). It's quite a trip down memory lane
to dig up these negs, some I haven't seen since I shot them.

Ivan was so rare, a really nice guy. All of Patti's band were
exceptionally nice men. Oh and a few Iggy stories I could tell . . .

was at the show and would really like to get a copy of it. Much to trade for
those who are interested. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! John

(five scheduled shows in CA in Nov. - still hoping there is time for
him to swing up the coast!)

Arts at St. Ann's and the Sydney Festival Present the world premiere
of LOU REED'S BERLIN,

http://www.loureed.com/new/news/articles/berlin.html

DECEMBER 14, 15, 16, 17 AT ST. ANN'S WAREHOUSE
JANUARY 18, 19, 20 IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

LIVE DEBUT OF REED'S CONTROVERSIAL 1973 LANDMARK SONG CYCLE TO FEATURE
MUSICAL DIRECTION BY BOB EZRIN AND HAL WILLNER, DIRECTION AND DESIGN
BY JULIAN SCHNABEL, LIGHTING BY JENNIFER TIPTON AND PERFORMERS
INCLUDING REED, ANTONY, SHARON JONES, RUPERT CHRISTIE, STEVE HUNTER,
FERNANDO SAUNDERS, TONY SMITH, ROB WASSERMAN AND OTHERS

When Lou Reed's Berlinwas released in 1973, it was a shock to critics
and fans that had just seen Reed reaffirmed as a rock visionary with
the runaway success of Transformer, which included the Top 20 hit
"Walk on the Wild Side," among other now-classic Reed compositions.
Instead of delivering another, similar album that would further cement
his reputation as glam-rock innovator, Reed betrayed the pigeonhole
and all expectations and immersed himself in a highly ambitious,
emotionally and psychologically exhausting, and ultimately, utterly
surprising work: a dark concept album about drifting, tormented
addicts in love, broken hearted and willfully disabled ex-pats,
formalizing their own downfalls in the outskirts of a divided city.
Though set it Berlin, this was a narrative so many of Reed's peers had
lived and felt firsthand.

The depth and impact of the album is evident in the critical response
it received upon release: It provoked hyperbolic reactions, both
positive and negative. The New York Times called the album "one of the
strongest, most original rock records in years." Rolling Stone raved,
"It is not an overstatement to say that Berlinwill be the Sgt. Pepper
of the Seventies." But then the same magazineamong many
othersattacked Reed for the work: "There are certain records that are
so patently offensive that one wishes to take some kind of physical
vengeance on the artists that perpetrate them. Reed's only excuse for
this performancecan only be that this was his last shot at a
once-promising career."

Over time, Berlin has come to be known not just as a cult favorite,
but as an influential masterwork and an essential album in a career
thatover 30 years laterhas included countless surprises and landmark
artistic endeavors. But Reed never performed Berlin live. Until now.

Arts at St. Ann's and the Sydney Festival have joined forces with Reed
to present a theatricalized concert version of the work, which makes
its world premiere at St. Ann's Warehouse for four nights only:
December 14, 15, 16 and 17 at 8:00 P.M. The entire Berlin recording
will be performed live, incorporating five additional songs by Reed
that enhance the song cycle. Tickets are $65.

As in the making of the album, Reed is collaborating on the concert
with an all-star creative team including musical direction by the
original producer, Bob Ezrinwho produced the Berlin album as well as
Pink Floyd's The Wall and hit albums by Alice Cooper, Kiss and
othersand record producer, Hal Willner, who has music-directed
numerous multi-artist concerts at St. Ann's original home at St.
Ann's Church in Brooklyn Heights. Willner's most recent works include
the Leonard Cohen tribute concert I'm Your Man (now a theatrically
released documentary film and an album on Verve Forecast) and the
compilation album Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and
Chanteys. Reed's friend, painter Julian Schnabel is directing and
designing, and Jennifer Tipton, who is beloved for her innovative work
with The Wooster Group and many others, is designing lighting for the
concert.

Producing the Berlinrecording, Ezrin met Reed's ambition of vision
with grand execution, assembling an all-star band for the recording in
London: Steve Winwood, Jack Bruce, Michael and Randy Brecker and
others. For the live performances at St. Ann's and in Sydney, Reed
will be joined onstage by friends and favorite collaborators such as
singers Antony and Sharon Jones, Rupert Christie ( keyboards), Steve
Hunter (guitar), Fernando Saunders (bass), Rob Wasserman (bass), Tony
Smith (drums), brass and strings contracted by Hal Willner with Steve
Bernstein and Jane Scarpantoni.

Lou Reed has collaborated with Arts at St. Ann's since 1990, when ASA
co-commissioned and premiered the Lou Reed/John Cale work Songs for
'Drella, which also became an acclaimed album and concert video. In
2003, Reed performed The Raven at St. Ann's Warehous, and, last year,
he performed as a guest in Arts at St. Ann's 25th anniversary benefit
concert, Fire at Keaton's Bar and Grill.

Artistic Director Susan Feldman expressed her enthusiasm at welcoming
Reed back for the world premiere of Berlin: [quote from Susan].
"I have been wanting to produce Berlin ever since a cousin of mine
first handed it to me on a cassette about ten years ago! And, last
year, I was very fortunate to meet up the adventurous director of the
Sydney Festival, Fergus Linehan, who shared the passion. It's been
gratifying to engage Lou and some of his closest collaborators Bob
Ezrin, Julian Schnabel, Hal Willner in what's sure to be a labor of
love and an important part of rock history. Berlin is a sad song about
people on the edge, that, at its highest moments, achieves a
shimmering elegance."
Berlinepitomizes the sensibility strengths of Arts at St. Ann's, which
is perhaps best known for its signature multi-artist concerts and
ground breaking music and theater collaborations. Among the many
highly acclaimed productions at St. Ann's Warehouse are Charlie
Kaufman and the Coen Brothers' Theater of the New Ear, The Royal Court
Theater's 4:48 Psychosis, The Wooster Group's The Emperor Jones by
Eugene O'Neill, To You, the Birdie and House/Lights,and Mabou Mines
Dollhouse, which continues to tour the world. St. Ann's Warehouse has
featured special New York concerts by David Bowie, Beth Gibbons, Joe
Strummer, Antony and the Johnsons, Aimee Mann, The Tiger Lillies and
Music from the Mississippi Hill Country, featuring Othar Turner and
Lucinda Williams.
Berlinis funded in part by The Peter Jay Sharp Foundation and The New
York State Music Fund. [snip - see website for tix info]

For those of us still obsessively interested in Paul Jones' original
version of the song Privilege (Set me Free), some kind person has put
a clip of it from Peter Watkins' 1967 film up on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uychvasGTiA

Kind regards

Andrew

I never saw [or knew] about the original until now. Quite a nice version of
the song. Also an unusual movie?

I think the Patti Smith Group did a supreme job on this tune.

okay, I waited until the last day and crap - the image they use is
really hard for me to determine the case of letters, or something, and
have been LOCKED-OUT by having too many unsuccessful logins. DOES NE1

New York Club CBGB Hosting Final Concert

Oct 15, 9:46 PM (ET)
By JAKE COYLE

NEW YORK (AP) - CBGB was to host its final concert Sunday night after a
33-year residence in downtown New York as the iconic, grungy bastion of punk.

The concert, headlined by rock poet Patti Smith, was to be the final note
sounded in a drawn-out battle to preserve the legendary club. A homeless
advocacy group that owns the property, the Bowery Residents Committee, is not
renewing CBGB's lease, which expired in August 2005. The club will close Oct.
31.

The club's run may be ending at its Manhattan location, but it will continue
in different ways, Smith said.

"CBGB's is a state of mind," she said at pre-show news conference. "The new
kids have to have their own places."

CBGB's closure has prompted protests, tributes and vigils for more than a year
- a cycle ended when CBGB's owner, Hilly Kristal, gave up his legal fight to
stay.

CBGB, hailed by many as the birthplace of punk, opened in December 1973 and
over the years helped spawn the careers of such acts as the Ramones, Blondie,
the Talking Heads and Television. Though the club's glory days are long gone,
it has remained a symbolic fixture on the Manhattan music scene.

Blondie singer Deborah Harry performed at CBGB on Saturday, part of a weeklong
send-off for the club.

With a capacity of barely 300, CBGB was founded as a place of freedom for
different musical acts. Its letters stand for the music Kristal originally
planned to present there - country, bluegrass and blues - but it quickly came
to represent the physical epicenter of early punk and the storied downtown
scene of 1970s New York.

Kristal plans to move the club to Las Vegas, and its store, CBGB Fashions,
will move on Nov. 1 to a nearby location at Broadway and Bond Street.

"I'm thinking about tomorrow and the next day and the next day and going on to
do more with CBGB's," Kristal said Sunday.

The Bowery Residents Committee, which holds a 45-year lease on the building,
houses 250 homeless people above the club. CBGB is its lone commercial
tenant.

Hi All,

I was unable to connect to the CBGB stream. If anyone can post a link to
download the video, audio or both it would be very much appreciated. I know
that DIME doesn't allow any satellite radio, so if anyone knows an alternate
site to torrent their broadcast from that would be even better! Thanks very
much.

I managed to record all of it off the Sirius broadcast except the first 5
minutes, so I didn't get Piss Factory or the abortive start to Hunter Gets
Captured by the Game....I got started just after she said something about
not having improved any since 1974 <grin>.

I've got a busy week ahead, but if no one else got it recorded, I'll clean
up my recording and put it on disc and make it available through the list.
I'm hoping someone else did, because as I said I didn't get the first 5
minutes.

It was a fitting tribute to the end of a place that gave birth to so much.
Most of her own material was from 1974-76; one new song called Without
Chains, I think...about Guantanamo. Lots of covers, too, including several
that I think are new for her -- the list of PSG covers is getting longer and
longer.

The band included Jay Dee, Lenny, Tony, and Richard Lloyd (of Television).
Guest appearance by Flea.

Set List:

Piss Factory
Hunter Gets Captured by the Game (Smokey Robinson/The Marvelettes)
Kimberly/The Tide is High (Blondie)
Pale Blue Eyes
Marquee Moon (Television)
We Three
Distant Fingers
Without Chains(?) (new song about Guantanamo)
Ghost Dance
Birdland

(break)

Sonic Reducer (Dead Boys)
Redondo Beach
Free Money
Pissing in a River
Gimme Shelter (Stones)
Space Monkey
Blitzkrieg Bop/Beat on the Brat/Rock and Roll Radio/Sheena is a Punk Rocker
(Ramones)
Ain't it Strange
So You Wanna Be a Rock and Roll Star
Babelogue/Rock and Roll Nigger (with a little bit of Little Johnny Jewel
thrown in)
For Your Love (Yardbirds)
My Generation

(Encore)
Land
Gloria
Elegie

The spirit of the early days of CBGB was very much present. There were
acknowledgements to/for Tom Verlaine, Television, Blondie, Dead Boys and
Ramones, plus her brother Todd, Jane Friedman (her original manager) and
Michael Stipe of REM.

The show ran nearly 3 hours long, closing finally with Elegie....which fades
out with her quoting Jimi Hendrix "I think its sad, its much too bad, that
our friends can't be with us today" followed by the names of many from the
early days who have now passed on, including Robert Quine, Lester Bangs,
Greg Shaw, Terry Ork, Jerry Nolan, Lance Loud, Peter Laughner, Joe Strummer,
Johnny Thunders, Stiv Bators, Richard Sohl, and Johnny, Joey and Dee Dee
Ramone.

"Well, goodnight everybody. Farewell CBGB's. Thirty-three years. It's the
same age as Jesus. Thank you Hilly. Good night everybody. Goodnight.
Remember, drink plenty of water, brush your teeth, be happy."

And so an era ends.

(first post mangled the formatting on the set list so I'm reposting)
