Arthur Rimbaud born 1854 in Charleville
One of the great names of French poetry, Arthur Rimbaud lived a brief and
unhappy life but nevertheless managed to create some of the most enduring
verse of the age. Most of his work was written as prose poems, a style
which has always been more popular in French than English. By all
accounts, Rimbaud lived his life as a debauched and unpleasant wretch, and
the contradiction between that and the beauty and simplicity of his verse
could hardly be more pronounced. His friendship with his fellow poet Paul
Verlaine inspired the film Total Eclipse, probably the only time a gay
nineteenth-century poet will ever be played by a major Hollywood movie
star - Leonardo DiCaprio.
