On second thought, yes, the Summer happened in '67 with
the big San Francisco Human Be-in for an official starting
point. '67 was a world-wide high water year for the innocent,
flowers and beads hippy thing. By '68 a darker edge began
to emerge; Charles Manson, heroin on Haight St., Hells
Angels on speed, protesting kids trading in their picket signs
for machine guns and pipe bombs.... and some very bad acid.
There was a small group of hipsters in SF in '66 that declared
a "summer of love" a year before at a sunrise gathering. If only
they could have stopped time....
