Patti Smith Plays 3 Shows at Bowery Ballroom on April 24th

http://brooklynrocks.blogspot.com/search/label/Bowery%20Ballroom

Patti Smith is playing three separate shows at the Bowery Ballrom on
April 24th. This should be a wild night -- I have heard that each show
will be a different set and Patti's new CD (Twelve - which is a CD of
cover tunes) will be given free with each ticket purchased. Tickets
for each show are only $17 and a "3-Session" ticket for all three
shows is $51.

If you buy the 3-Session ticket, you get a bonus 7" single with two
non-CD tracks which has Patti covering:
A: A Perfect Day (Lou Reed)
B: Here I Dreamt I was an Architect (The Decemberists).

Patti Smith Breaks Our Hearts Again
April 3, 2007
http://legends.typepad.com/living_with_legends_the_h/2007/04/patti_smith_bre.html

UPDATE: We hear that there's a party for Patti Smith tonight at the
STAR LOUNGE. [ne1 know what this if about/for????] Our invitation must
have gotten lost in the mail. How much more heartbreak can we take?
Good thing we know about the VIP elevator!

Take The Service Elevator to The Basement
http://legends.typepad.com/living_with_legends_the_h/2007/03/take_the_vip_el.html

So, for those of you who've been dying to get a drink in the basement,
The New York Post lets us in on the secret.

A room key isn't a guarantee, however. At Hotel Chelsea, a VIP
elevator brings special guests through Star Lounge's employee
entrance. But not every tenant gets the royal treatment. "We want to
keep the hotel's mystique," claims Star Lounge owner Charles Ferri,
whose tabletops see plenty of stiletto heels once the poppy DJ starts
spinning. "But residents getting in, it depends."

In other words, just take the service elevator through the laundry
room. It's really no surprise that they want the artistic cache of the
hotel without the artists. That's the way the whole city is going.
They want to be cool and hip and creative, but without the creative
people around.

Patti Smith to celebrate new album with three shows in one day April 06, 2007 11:28 AM
by Tjames Madison
LiveDaily Contributor
Punk icon Patti Smith (tickets | music) will play three shows at New York's Bowery Ballroom on April 24, coinciding with the release of her latest album, "Twelve." Fans who purchase the new album at selected New York City outlets will receive a free ticket to one of the shows, according to a press release. A limited number of tickets are also being made available for purchase directly. New York retailers participating in the album/free-ticket promotion are Borders (461 Park Ave.; 576 Second Ave.; 10 Columbus Circle; 2 Penn Plaza), Virgin Megastore (52 E. 14th), FYE (1290 Avenue of the Americas), and J&R (23 Park Row). "Twelve," Smith's first collection of new studio recordings since 2004's "Trampin'," features 12 cover versions of famous rock songs and overlooked treasures, including new takes on Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and Neil Young's "Helpless." Smith and her band--Lenny Kaye (guitar), Jay Dee Daugherty (drums) and Tony Shanahan
(bass, keyboards)-- interpret a wide variety of other rock artists on the album, including Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, The Doors, Nirvana, Jefferson Airplane, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers Band and Paul Simon. Joining Smith on the set are a number of guest artists, including Italian cellist Giovanni Sollima; playwright Sam Shepard (with whom Smith collaborated on "Cowboy Mouth" in 1971) on banjo; early '60s Greenwich Village folk artists John Cohen (banjo) and Peter Stampfel (fiddle); Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist Flea; Television guitarist Tom Verlaine; The Black Crowes' Rich Robinson on slide guitar and dulcimer; and hip-hop producer Luis Resto (Eminem) on keyboards. Patti's son, Jackson, and daughter, Jesse, contribute guitar and vocal work, respectively, to the recording.

Exclusive Video: Patti Smith Talks 'Twelve'
Posted Apr 6th 2007 7:00PM by Jessica Robertson
Filed under: News, Video, Exclusive, New York City

http://www.spinner.com/2007/04/06/exclusive-video-patti-smith-talks-twelve/

It's been more than 30 years since the release of Patti Smith's
'Horses' -- the debut album from an idiosyncratic punk icon who was
determined to defy and redefine the rules of rock 'n' roll -- and as
decades pass, this newly inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is still
gunning for two things: evolution and revolution.

This past Tuesday, Smith returned to her former home, the famed Hotel
Chelsea in NYC, to celebrate the upcoming release of her latest album,
'Twelve,' which features all covers including the Rolling Stones'
'Gimme Shelter,' Neil Young's 'Helpless' and Nirvana's 'Smells Like
Teen Spirit' (which she talks about in our exclusive video below).
"This is the world debut of this song which means it's probably the
worst rendition we'll ever do," she said of Tears for Fears' 'Everbody
Wants to Rule the World' from a makeshift stage in the cramped Star
Lounge. "I've been doing a lot of interviews and journalists ask me,
'Patti, why did you choose to cover this song?' And I say, 'Because I
wanted to!'"

And so it goes.

"I always wanted to do a covers album, but I didn't really feel I had
the range to do the kind of album I wanted to do," Smith tells
Spinner. "I didn't know enough about singing and didn't have the
range. As the project evolved, a lot of the songs on the [original]
list I made didn't make the final cut, and a lot of songs that I
didn't plan on doing wound up being the ones I chose."

Among the unexpected additions was 'Helpless,' which Smith performed
alongside her band, including longtime guitarist Lenny Kaye and son,
Jackson. "It's just a beautiful song about reflection, childhood,
maturation," she says. "I didn't plan on recording it but we were in
the studio late one night and there it was. Whenever I sing it, I feel
emotional. I feel its beauty."

'Twelve' hits stores April 24.

FUTURE/NOW FILMS DEFEATS KRAMER LAWSUIT IN FEDERAL COURT
(by email from DDBanter 4/6/07)

U. S. District Judge Andrew J. Guilford has issued a ruling
exonerating David Thomas, Laurel Legler, Future/Now Films, Zenta LLC.,
>From The Heart Productions, and Carole Lee Dean of all claims brought
against them by Wayne Kramer, Margaret Saadi Kramer and Muscle Tone,
Inc.

"It's good to remember the 60's, but some say if you remember the 60's
you weren't there. Perhaps to assist all of us in remembering the
60's, Defendants David Thomas and Laurel Legler made a film on the
MC5, a 60's Detroit Rock and Roll band that made its mark on American
history with loud rock and roll and radical perceptions positing an
imperialistic and materialistic America. This lawsuit teaches that
materialism remains with us, as Plaintiffs vigorously seek money from
Defendants. Although the MC5 faded away largely due to drugs, the band
lingers on in the memory of many, and would be known to many other but
for pending legal feuds."

The Honorable Andrew J Guilford, United States District Judge
Findings Of Fact And Conclusions Of Law, issued March 31, 2007

Many will recall numerous serious allegations being made in the wake
of the cancellation of the "MC5 - A True Testimonial" documentary's
official release back in 2004; the Court has weighed the actual
evidence and made a comprehensive ruling, stating:

"Much of this case rests upon the credibility of witnesses, and the
Court finds that Thomas and Legler were far more credible than Kramer
on key issues concerning alleged promises, representations and
commitments."

Could this blockbuster ruling finally clear the remaining obstacles
and enable the long-overdue release of the brilliant "MC5 - A True
Testimonial" documentary? Judge Guilford expressed his opinion:

"Defendants were first-time filmmakers who spent eight years of their
lives trying to create a documentary film that would be historically
truthful, a documentary that would celebrate the talent and creativity
of the MC5 band, a documentary that would say something about the
60's, and would say something about the present. They succeeded, and
the film merits wide distribution for the enjoyment and edification of
the masses."

Tell me that I'm dreaming...

Bruce Springsteen Tribute - Carnegie Hall 04.05.07
http://freshbread.blogs.com/fresh_bread/2007/04/bruce_springste.html

(w pictures - one of Patti at mic singing)

Check another storied NYC venue off my "must visit" list. Thursday
night, Carnegie Hall went Jersey on us with a massively entertaining
tribute to the BOSS - Bruce Springsteen. Knitting Factory Founder
Michael Dorf (Bob Dylan Tribute, Joni Mitchell Tribute) put together
another stellar lineup of artists to interpret some of Bruce's
greatest songs.

The event was more than I expected and was a flat out success if not
just for the money raised for Music For Youth.

Some standout performances were the Hold Steady, Holmes Brothers and
kids, Pete Yorn, Joseph Arthur, and the BOSS. Patti Smith's
performance was notable just because she hawked a loogie on the stage.

The most excited person in the house had to be Hold Steady front man
Craig Finn who was going spastic, blasting his smile to the top of the
hall.

Judicial references to the MC5's view of a "materialistic and imperialistoc America". And an exhortation to let "the masses" see the movie. I don't see Clinton/Gore here. I see an old radical who's now a judge having a little fun with the text of his decision.

Anyone know who this judge is?

And then again, maybe not.

The judge was appointed last year by George Bush, so he's probably not a former radical.

He's a former president of the California Bar Association, and worked for a large corporate law firm specializing in business law. He dismissed a law suit against WalMart (I have no idea what the legal merits were). And he represented the City of Anaheim in its suit against the Angels baseball team.

On the other hand, he has apparently done a LOT of pro-bono work representing poor people.

i saw this movie a few years ago at the tribeca film festival and
thought it was amazing. not knowing of the feud with wayne, i emailed
him telling him how much i enjoyed it. he sent a polite reply and i
haven't heard from him since.

way to do your homework, jl!
  I'm impressed!

Easter

Easter Sunday, we were walking.
Easter Sunday, we were talking.
Isabel, my little one, take my hand. Time has come.

Isabella, all is glowing.
Isabella, all is knowing.
And my heart, Isabella.
And my head, Isabella.

Frederick and Vitalie, savior dwells inside of thee.
Oh, the path leads to the sun. Brother, sister, time has come.

Isabella, all is glowing.
Isabella, all is knowing.
Isabella, we are dying.
Isabella, we are rising.

I am the spring, the holy ground,
the endless seed of mystery,
the thorn, the veil, the face of grace,
the brazen image, the thief of sleep,
the ambassador of dreams, the prince of peace.
I am the sword, the wound, the stain.
Scorned transfigured child of Cain.
I rend, I end, I return.
Again I am the salt, the bitter laugh.
I am the gas in a womb of light, the evening star,
the ball of sight that leads that sheds the tears of Christ
dying and drying as I rise tonight.

Isabella, we are rising.
Isabella, we are rising . . .

Hello bable-list.
I have had a bit of bad luck in my house, somehow the CD's I have been collecting for many years have been ruined in my basement. I think mold is the problem, but I have lost a lot of music. I have a bunch of tapes and they are great, but the cd's didnt make it. I have a collection that included back to cbgb's 1997 all the way to the bowery ballroom 2005. Is there anyway I could trade or whatever it would take to get some of this music back.
I thank everyone in advance because this list has always been very good to me. Please let me know what I can do.
Thank you,
Tamela Sloan

With many thanks to Courtney I am able to re-offer this 2 DVD set of the Rock
& Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The source is from the webcast.

I will take some trades and B&P's and hope that others can help pass it
along.

Can't quite explain it, but seeing that first made me want to cry then got
kinda creepy. I am going to reach into my pile of magazines/papers and pull
one out. Whatever it is I am going to burn it and let the ashes float out the
window. Let's see if what I pull carries a message, sorta like a bible-dip.

Hi,

I've been listening to an advance copy of "Twelve" for a while now
and must admit that I'm somewhat disappointed with it. The song
selection is fine, but Patti and the band don't do much with them.
Hendrix' Are You Experienced? leads it off and has a rather groovy
vibe to it, but after that, versions of Everybody Wants To Rule The
World, Helpless and Gimme Shelter don't really add anything to the
originals. I'd have to say Smells Like Teen Spirit is the highlight
with its use of banjo and mandolin, but versions of Soul Kitchen,
Midnight Rider and The Boy In The Bubble just lie there. The
arrangements are very bland...how about a guitar solo or something to
liven things up????

Anyone else have an opinion yet?

Cheers,
Marty

Actually, it's pretty cool. She begins with a few spoken lines from
Alice In Wonderland before launching into the song. The band sounds
particularly good, with lots of guitar feedback howling away in the
background. I don't know who is playing what, as I have no credits
with my copy.

I should say that Patti's singing is very strong throughout the album.

Cheers,
Marty

Hello,
Patti is to be interviewed on the XFM radio station between 22:00
and 01:00 tonight (GMT).
I don't think that their Web site has a playback function but you
can listen in online.
          Best wishes,

(wipes tears)

I was reall;y hoping that she and the boys would rip up and re-explore these
classics....

I hate to say it, but this is likely the worst stuff they've recorded.

VERY bland, uninteresting, pale..................

I used to love how Patti would go off and invoke, while the guys would
follow/lead, noone ever knew where it would go.

That was the beauty and the might of the work.

Even the Pre-writs were eloquent/tragic/mighty/blessed...

I am sorry,

this new stuff is embarrassing.

Hello...regarding first impressions...I am a long-time dj with a
free-form 3 hour radio program...and a long time Patti fan...making
the trek to Bowery Ballroom yearly...etc...I've been playing the four
selections from Twelve on my show, and particularly LOVE Pastime
Paradise...I think she does a remarkable job of bringing new life,
power and presence to this song...can't wait to hear the rest! (To be
honest...I'm not SO impressed with Gimme Shelter.)

I got my 4f12 the old-fashioned way (eBay), and
I liked "Everybody Wants...", although I thought
it was over-something'ed on the vocals. And Tom
Verlaine (IMHO) makes "Gimme Shelter" worth a
few listens.

With the disclaimer that I haven't yet heard SLTS,
I think what's missing from this is a sense of fun.
I wish she had done, say, "Hitchin' a Ride" instead
of "Helpless"; or "Venus" -- something from the 60s
with some fun and energy.

It seems like there are two promotional samplers out there.

One with:
  1. Helpless
  2. Gimme Shelter
  3. Everybody Wants To Rule The World
  4. Pastime Paradise

And another with:
  1. Smells Like Teen Spirit
  2. Changing Of The Guards
  3. Helpless
  4. White Rabbit

The link was to an archive of the second sampler.

And after you've heard the banjo(s?) on Patti's Smells Like Teen
Spirit, give a listen to this:

Thanks Marty I am looking forward to this album..............................................I was under the assumption that maybe White Rabbit was just a reading, but, sounds like the whole band is in on it.................cool.............jd

Cheers,
Marty

http://brooklynrocks.blogspot.com/2007/04/free-tickets-to-patti-smith-shows-at.html
The record company is really going all out to promote this new CD.
More information was announced...I was wondering how Patti was going
to play three separate shows and here is how it is going to happen:

The three 30-minute concerts will include acoustic music, spoken word
performances, and in-concert surprises. The doors open for each
"Bowery Sessions" show at 6pm, 8:30pm, and 10:30pm.

You can also get a free ticket to an of the shows (limit of 4 per
customer) by purchasing the CD at any of the following stores:

No Patti on Imus

Well, in case some of you haven't heard, Don Imus has been fired, so
we won't get a chance to see Patti perform on Imus In The Morning.

She probably would have declined anyway, after all.

I cried several-day-long "
Patti Smith honours skirt classical authors on its new album. A
discussion over Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain - and Murat Kurnaz

Mrs. Smith, allegedly you thought for years about the Cover album,
which appears now under the title Twelve ". What stopped you?

I plan this plate since the late Siebzigern. But when I had arranged a
list at that time and me presented, how I would sing the pieces, felt
that simply not okay. I was not yet ready and than singer saw myself
also less, but rather than Performerin or Rockaktivistin. Until my
deceased man Fred, which was a great musician, taught a quantity to me
over my voice. Only after it I had the feeling to be sufficiently
qualified to convert around the work of other artists.

And how! By the pieces, which I have since 1978 in the head, only
three remained remaining: Acres You Experienced? ", Gimme Shelter
"and White Rabbit ". At those there was none past.

Whereby you bring White Rabbit "on a so mystische way that one hardly
recognizes it.

That was the most difficult Song, which concerns the conversion.
Simply because of my admiration for Grace Slick. It wrote this Song,
and the text is great. But the crucial is their voice - one of the
most important statements of a female artist in the Sechzigern. There
were so many large singers. Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, Martha Reeves,
Joan Baez and, and, and. But if we talk about skirt' n' roll and what
it embodies, then it only Grace Slick created to keep up with their
male colleagues. I do not have the feeling, as if I could compete with
Grace, but I want to salute to her with my version.

And which is with Everybody Wants ton of Rule The World "from Tears
For Fears? With it you might surprise all those, which see in you the
Wdchterin skirt.

I did not intend first to take up it. I could not even do it. There
but then I sat in my Lieblingscafi and gr|belte over it after, which
runs in such a way in this world everything wrongly, and rang out this
nice small Pop Song. I sat there and thought: Wow, it brings it in a
sentence on the point. "Thus I decided to concentrate me on its
political core statement. But then I had to state that he has
something - he is easy to sing, had a nice rhythm, and he makes fun.

Still Jimi Hendrix remains. Is it correct that you met it briefly
before its death?

Yes, few hours, before it flew to London and never returned. It gave a
party for the inauguration of its Electric to lady of Studios. And I
spoke approximately 20 minutes with it. It concerned its Studio, of
which it was very proud, and over its future plans. Then it had to the
airport. All I retained the things, which he told me, in the heart.
And as soon as I was able to take up, have I mean first single Piss
Factory "and my album produces Horses "in Electric lady - exactly
like the new plate.

Do they suffer from a Hendrix Obsession?

I would not call it Obsession. I regarded it simple as the largest
skirt star, whom America had ever. Because for me it had everything.
It was beautiful, projecting SAM, a mad technician, a mad Performer,
and I had loved its texts. It was very respectful a Visiondr, and in
handling other musicians.

Pleases you, like the Hendrix Estate the deduction administered - or
above all: markets?

In order to be honest, had I unite problems to receive a release for
my version. There there were doubts, because I parts of the text as
poem rezitiere. However the lucrative robbing has its that it did to
do nothing with it. Therefore it changes for also nothing in my
appreciation it opposite. I think, he was a young man, who made a few
error. And the largest was to lose its life. It was a terrible
accident.

Contrary to Kurt Cobain, over whose suicide you were very disappointed?

I was even correctly furious over it. Simply, because I could identify
myself with Nirvana - with its world and its fan. The so-called Grunge
Kids looked like my own family. I could develop a relationship with
them, to the kind, like her dressed, to her attitude, and I liked the
music. I did not have notion of Kurts private life or of its pain. I
could do it only by its music. And I was in such a way shocked, when I
had heard of its suicide that I cried several-day-long - and my man
Fred with me. I mean, we was old enough, in order to be its parents.
We had the feeling the fact that it makes a mad job and would have a
large future. It seemed to me, as if these recent, talentierte Bur its
life simply so wegschmiss. Nevertheless I like Nirvana, it great Songs
wrote, and I wanted one of it covern. Indeed Heart Shaped box ",
which possesses a very strong text. But then I decided for Smells
Like Teen Spirit ". Simply, because I heard it in the car and this
vision had, how one could bring the Song on completely different way.
In the kind of Mountain Music, thus this knarzigen Country music,
which loved Kurt very much. We took up it then wi
