re: Patti's Poem

One of the aspects of 'Patti Smith' that I consider, is that she is quite often 'not at home'. Her perspective is shaped by wherever she spends her minutes that fill each day. Often, those minutes are in another country, surrounded by other sensibilities, reflecting off of individuals with completely different reference maps. Logic seems to be enough to allow us to feel the same things as another culture, but in truth, it is not. Language is the collection of symbols collectively experienced by the members of that culture. Stumbling across another culture is like finding out crayons also come in a 24 count box, and not just the 8 that you have.
Now, the sky will never be drawn the same....

The Earth, with all of its grandeur, is given from the same source as our souls. How can we grasp the aspect of attaining wholeness for our souls, when that judgment day comes, and not be aware that the other gifts we have been given, and the condition with which we have maintained them, will not also be a point of accountability?

 Subject: Patti's New Poem

Back in the days of Seventh Heaven and Witt, I carried those books

in my coat pocket for almost a year absorbing each tough, short, to

the point rock n roll poem slowly, turning maybe a page a week.

They were so good I didn't want the books to end.

Now I can't relate too Patti's endless, heavy-handed apocalyptic litanies.

Sorry, I'll always love Patti, her soul and music, but I'd had enough

poetic flag waving and thunder drumming for this decade.

Give me a 25 year old Jersey girl's one-two punch perspective of

the streets of New York City. That's what I tugged on Patti's

coat tail for 32 years ago and it still hits my heart stronger than

this big boom boom God stuff.

Can anyone relate?

Paul
