Yes...you can hear Twelve on the radio on my program, and on many
other community radio stations across the country! Yesterday I played
Everybody Hurts, which I LOVE and agree this should have been one of
the Twelve, and not the 13th.

Thanks for putting those extra tracks up for us!

Hi Folks

Just wanted to say that I love 'Twelve' and the bonus tracks (thanks again
Lynn... without your download I'd have been reduced to trawling through
ebay!). This is the first ever Patti record I've been able to play at a party
with universal approval (and dancing!!!)

I think we on the babel-list may have been slightly spoilt in the run-up to
the release with rawer and possibly better live versions of a couple of the
tracks at the Bowery Ballroom concerts.

Nonetheless I'm very well satisfied with the final offering. And my favourite
tracks...?... that changes every time I listen.

Thanks Patti as always. You're a star! Can't wait for the Roundhouse.
Pauline x

Everybody Hurts is available as the 13th song on the CD that is being
sold by Target stores in the US.

The other two songs are available on a 7" 45 (not a CD). It is being
given away as a bonus for people who buy the CD at a few selected
stores.

Well, I'm reacting too soon, so disregard as necessary, but wading through the whole show, and skipping another choice, finally here's patti....and I sense lip gloss, and make-up tan.... and no opportunity to speak. Bad choice, bad booking, bad notes from some marketing guru that feels that they have a handle......

It is what it is, and it isn't mine to say....but first glance????? too much aquiescent make-up

How can we grasp the aspect of attaining wholeness for our souls, when that judgment day comes, and not be aware that the other gifts we have been given, and the condition with which we have maintained them, will not also be a point of accountability?

I thought that she looked mighty fine, and I loved her wearing an =Adult
Swim= sweatshirt. Nothing like poking the dumbass Boston dictators in the eye
for their stoopidity, huh? :D
I remember wondering last year why the subject of "Patti should do an
album of her cover songs" kept popping up here...I suggested "Street Fighting
Man", that's kinda sorta close to "Shelter" ;)

The SOUND is what turned us here off. It was WAY low and mixed...well, it
didn't sound mixed at all. It sounded to me like something you'd hear on some
mid-60's show like "Hullaballoo" or "Where the Action Is". That's not a
compliment.

Hey, I'm so glad to be back here. I had 'pooter problems and then
problems IRL and was justly placed on Babel-Lists suspension list. I've gotta
make up for lost time and fix something that I failed to do in January due to
the above.

About the day after I'd written in about offering copies of the New Years
concerts at the Bowery, I went wonky for a while and never was able to follow
through, first with computer and mail trouble, then with personal problems.

If anyone's still interested, I can send out copies to the first 5 people
to e-mail me :) They're hot!

If you'd asked in the newsletter "back then", I apologize. I wasn't
ignoring you, and I didn't accept my part of the twig with the thought of not
paying it back to others. =sigh=

i thought she looked and sounded great on the tonight show. Band was
fine, although Jackson's got to learn to relax a bit (but, who
wouldn't be nervous on national tv...i mean, do you think he has been
on stage more than 25 times since his old Smoke on the Water days...?
and he sounded great). I agree that the sound mix wasn't great.
Still, its tv and people expect that. I think the performance was
good enough to sell a few albums.... and convince people that Patti's
still a powerful performer.

Thanks for letting me know. I'm sorry that I missed it. But I'd did get
her to sign three books and a CD for me in Philly and also saw her performance
in Philly and all three at the BB. I think that she's the first person I've
met who has been on Leno. Too bad that she didn't get her wish and appear on
the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

i thought she looked and sounded great on the tonight show. Band was
fine, although Jackson's got to learn to relax a bit (but, who
wouldn't be nervous on national tv...i mean, do you think he has been
on stage more than 25 times since his old Smoke on the Water days...?
and he sounded great). I agree that the sound mix wasn't great.
Still, its tv and people expect that. I think the performance was
good enough to sell a few albums.... and convince people that Patti's
  still a powerful performer.

And Janis Joplin, Diamanda Galas, Grace Slick and a hundred other
singers who are worthy aren't in the top ten, but the list said "fab"
singers, so I pause and consider that they didn't say intense or
most original.

----- Original Message -----

WASHINGTON - Folk singer and anti-war activist Joan Baez says she doesn't know
why she was not allowed to perform for recovering soldiers recently at Walter
Reed Army Medical Center as she planned.

In a letter to The Washington Post published Wednesday, she said rocker
John Mellencamp had asked her to perform with him last Friday and that she
accepted his invitation.

"I have always been an advocate for nonviolence and I have stood as firmly
against the
Iraq war as I did the Vietnam War 40 years ago," she wrote. "I realize now
that I might have contributed to a better welcome home for those soldiers
fresh from Vietnam. Maybe that's why I didn't hesitate to accept the
invitation to sing for those returning from Iraq and
Afghanistan. In the end, four days before the concert, I was not 'approved' by
the Army to take part. Strange irony."

Baez, 66, told the Post in a telephone interview Tuesday that she was not told
why she was left off the program by the Army. "There might have been one,
there might have been 50 (soldiers) that thought I was a traitor," she told
the paper.

The Post reported that Walter Reed officials did not respond to requests for
comment Tuesday, but that in an e-mailed statement published Monday on
RollingStone.com, spokesman Steve Sanderson said the medical center received
the request for participation by Baez just two days before the concert.

"These additional requirements were not in the agreement/contract and would
have required a modification," Sanderson told the magazine's Web site.

Baez's manager, Mark Spector, told the Post that Mellencamp's management
invited Baez to perform in March and handled all the arrangements. The Post
said Mellencamp's manager, Randy Hoffman, did not return calls requesting
comment and that Mellencamp's publicist said the singer was ill Tuesday and
unavailable.

But Mellencamp earlier told RollingStone.com: "They didn't give me a reason
why she couldn't come. We asked why and they said, 'She can't fit here,
period.' "

Tara
by Patti Smith

She stood by the door

of her Virginia farm

pulling a sweater on

the branches

of the dogwood

she had tended

were bowed

blossoms loosened

tossed in sudden snow

the deer stood

in mute wonder

by her garden's edge

she slipped the phone

in her pocket

her daughter

unharmed

among

petals gone

she snapped

a branch

a tempest stalled

she felt the boy

she felt the dead

she felt the families

she felt the wind

the deer don't do that

she said

the deer don't do that

Interview With Patti Smith Online
Wednesday, May 02, 2007

or
http://www.cfru.ca/boards/viewtopic.php?t=1305

This week the Mich Vish Interracial Morning Show! is thrilled to
present excerpts from a recent interview Vish conducted with
revolutionary artist and musical icon Patti Smith.

Blossoming in New York City's underground arts scene in the early
1970s, Patti Smith established herself as the most poetic voice in
rock 'n' roll since Bob Dylan. Smith altered the landscape for women
in music, her theatrical performances and political stance were a
harbinger of punk, and her distinctive voice remains a remarkable
force. Vish was very lucky to speak with Smith about her brand new
album Twelve in mid-April, and we'll be airing excerpts of this
conversation over the next two weeks.

Remember, if you can't tune in live at 8:05 am on 93.3 FM or
www.cfru.ca to hear this interview with Patti Smith (the interview
starts after the news), you can listen to it for up to 30 days here.

Maybe I'm not paying close enough attention but I find
it weird that I haven't seen too many postings about
this gig.

Anyway. I noticed it was posted on Dime.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but I just wanted to express my
appreciation of the "souvenance". Yesterday was Novalis - almost 20 years
ago I'd read his "The Blue Flower" and thought to myself, when I have more
time, I'd like to spend a year just focussing on him and his work. Then I
forgot about him. A while ago was the souvenance on Penelope Fitzgerald,
written by Janet Hamill, I believe, and Fitzgerald's book "The Blue Flower"
was mentioned. I'd long forgotten Novalis, but always liked the image of the
blue flower and romanticism, so I bought the book and enjoyed it very much -
a biographical novel about Novalis. Now I'll finally get back to him.
I also bought "Fictions" by Jorge Luis Borges - which had been recommended
in the "coffee break".
So, besides all the talk about Twelve etc. etc. (which I still haven't got -
I pre-ordered from Amazon.com instead of through Germany and it's taking
forever!!! Any day now...) I do treasure that Patti is such a multi-faceted
person who offers us so much inspiration on various levels, as well as
widening our horizons through wonderful book recommendations.

By the way, Paul, I'm so glad you're back. I'd missed your comments for a
while there.

Alice

TWELVE entered the Billboard chart at # 60, beating the debut numbers of Patti's last two albums, but it still sold only 11,000 copies (it should have at least reached Twelve thousand!).

Overall, last week saw a "new record low" of overall music sales, down to only 7.7 million albums.

Meanwhile, here's the lyrics Patti added to a far more memorable version of HELPLESS that was done with Neil Young at the Bridge School Benefit concert in October, 1996.

  HELPLESS (Neil Young)

There is a town in north Ontario
With dream comfort memory to spare
And in my mind I still need a place to go
  All my changes were there

Blue, blue windows behind the stars
  Yellow moon on the rise
Big birds flying across the sky
  Throwing shadows on our eyes

  Leave us, helpless, helpless, helpless

Blue, blue windows, behind the stars
  Yellow moon on the rise
Big birds flying across the sky
  Throwing shadows on our eyes

  Helpless, helpless, helpless

PATTI: I held you in my arms
You were so young and small
  In my arms
  and I imagined you
  Racing through
  Lightning fields
  I imagined you
  Running from star to star
  I couldnt feel you
  Within the bluest field
  You and me running instead
  But I was so

  Helpless, helpless, helpless
I was so Helpless, helpless, helpless

  And I could measure
  the breath of your heart
  I didnt know the depth
  Of your soul
  I could see
  See images going
  Through your mind
They were so far better than
  My own
And then I will not just be

  Helpless, helpless, helpless

Baby can you hear me now?
The chains are locked and tied across the door
  Baby, sing with me somehow

  Helpless, helpless, helpless

We arrived around 6:30 and waited in line until the doors opened at 8. Staked out a spot about 6 feet from center stage. Patti came on just past 9 with Jackson, Tony, Jay Dee and Lenny. Patti was wearing a plum colored long sleeved blouse under a black suit coat and jeans tucked into brown cowboy boots. Her hair was stylishly tousled in bohemian style. She looked radiant!

They opened with Everybody Wants To Rule the World. They also did Redondo Beach, Changing of the Guard, Boy In the Bubble, Free Money, Within You Without You and Are you Experienced. She told a story about getting up early that morning and going for a walk on the sunset strip where she encountered 2 different people walking white rabbits on leashes. She said that it was a sign telling her what song NOT to do. She also told a hilarious story about staying up until midnight when she was a teen waiting to hear Sgt. Pepper for the first time. Her father came down in his underwear to yell at her to "turn that shit off!"

The first set was excellent. We were right in front of Patti, one person back. We were squashed like sardines in a sweaty can. It was very hot. Patti joked about the amount of words she had to learn and did a funny countdown of the verses during Changing of the Guards. She got it nearly perfect. Boy in the Bubble was great too. she and the band really nailed it. Free Money rocked. She pulled out the clarinet for Are you Experienced. I thought that all the live versions surpassed the studio ones. I find this generally true with all her records though. Lenny was fluid and tasty. Tony and Jay Dee were locked in. Jackson seemed a bit tentative, but let loose with some nice solos. Patti was relaxed and in a great mood. She also referred to the Harvard paper's review of Twelve. The writer called her a moron. She was bemused. She joked about the album being referred to as karaoke. "After 30 years of bad singing she finally sings all the words in tune and they call it karaoke!" At this point she and the band took a 20 minute break. This was a mistake. They had built up some great momentum and stopping really killed the energy. the crowd got restless during the break and more people tried to crash up front. This got the people that had been there since the beginning angry and the mood changed from one of community to one of being protective of our space. There was a lot of pushing going on. I just turned 50 a few weeks ago and really don't need this kind of crap any more.

The 2nd set was a mess. She opened with a nice version of Helpless and the ubiquitous Beneath the Southern Cross, but it fell apart after that, they did a stirring version of Pissing In A River. It seemed that Patti kind of ran out of gas. Midnight Rider was bland with an uninspired solo from Jackson and Smells Like Teen Spirit, which I was most hoping for, was a disaster. After coming through on the lyrically dense Dylan and Simon tunes she completely flubbed the words to the simpler Nirvana song. They did a version of Lou Reed's Perfect Day, a song that I love, and it was just OK. All this being said, only Patti could screw up so badly and still be great, captivating and entertaining. And she was. Hopefully, they'll iron out most of the kinks for the tour. She said that this show was a warm up show several times. She rallied for a set ending Rock and roll Ni**er.

The encores were generally much better. An excellent version of Soul Kitchen led into Everybody Hurts, which she again failed to get the lyrics together for. It was still charming as only Patti could make it. They closed with a rousing version of Gloria and that was it. I guess you could characterize the show as one of ragged brilliance. Patti is still that unique performer that makes everyone in the room feel connected to her. Unfortunately, there were times when that connection didn't extend to each other in the crowd. I really think that they shouldn't have taken the break. It changed the dynamic completely for the worse. The shows in Europe probably won't have this problem and I'm sure that more rehearsal time will tighten the new songs up considerably. I know that remembering lyrics has never been one of Patti's strengths and learning an albums worth of cover tunes is a particular challenge.

That being said, every chance to see Patti and the guys live is a chance not to be missed. I'm very glad we went, though at times it felt more like we survived it instead.

A couple more things about the Roxy show.

I was excited that Patti talked
about Aqua Teen Hunger Force. She mentioned that she just did a commentary
for the DVD of the movie. I was wearing an ATHF shirt, but I don"t think she
noticed. I love that show and have been trying to get my friends interested.
I think they might check it out now that Patti has given her seal of approval
J

The other thing, and this may have been mentioned before (I just joined
this group a couple of days ago), she mentioned the in-store at Amoeba
happening today. Wish I could make it, but I wont be able to get off work in
time.

I thought the show was great, even the messier parts. I agree, only
Patti could screw up so badly and still be great.

Phil,

Thanks for the review. She performed a similar show at the Hiro Ballroom a
few weeks back. She flubbed some lines, but the atmosphere was pretty
congenial. In fact, my friend and I met some very nice Patti fans (if you are on this
list, hi Wendy and husband)! We were at the center/right of the stage, and
the tall people were kind of letting us shorties in. After the break I was
delighted with "Southern Cross" ~ it is always one of my favorites live. Her
version of "Perfect Day" was fabulous, I cried, because it was my wedding song.
She screwed it up at the Bowery, when my husband was actually with me though
:-(

All in all, the energy at Hiro was fantastic, the show went on and on, and
my friend and I took the 1am train 90 minutes back here, but we wouldn't have
missed a minute!!!

And I know what you mean about the age thing. My feet were KILLING me that
night from being on them for so long!

Paula

Just got back from the in-store appearance at Amoeba. Patti, Lenny, Jay Dee,
Tony and Andy Paley (who provided the equipment were there. The place was
packed, with everyone shepherded into the record aisles leading back form an
elevated stage. The store is really massive. They played a nice set:

Everybody Wants To Rule the World
Helpless
Redondo Beach
White Rabbit
In My Blakean Year
Perfect Day
Are You Experienced
Smells Like Teen Spirit

It was mostly acoustic, with Tony playing an electric bass. Everyone kept
switching instruments. Patti played clarinet during Are You Experienced. It
was relaxed and informal. Patti mentioned that she was feeling a little under
the weather. She did an intro to Blakean Year about driving across country to
do an in-store in San Francisco 30 years ago and told the rabbit story from
last night but then actually played White Rabbit. With the exception of
Everybody Wants To Rule the World, which they had to restart, she got the
lyrics right for all the songs. The versions were softer in nature than last
night due to the acoustic setting, but they sounded great. Teen Spirit was
especially good, I think to make up for the messy rendition at the Roxy.

After the set we were herded into a serpentine line to get out stuff signed. I
got my copy of Easter signed by Patti, Lenny and Jay Dee. Tony wasn't there
for the signing. I guess they were just doing the original band members only.
Patti also signed my copy of Seventh Heaven and Patti and Lenny signed the CD
booklet for the St. Marks Church disc. Patti asked me how I liked the new
album and whether I bought it. I think she was a little perturbed that I
didn't have it with me. I told her I liked it alot, but I liked it live
better. I wished them good luck on the European tour. In parting I told Patti
that I loved her and that was it. Quite the 24 hours here in the City of
Angels.

In all the excitement of the last couple of days in Los Angeles I missed the
Leno performance. If anyone captured the video would it be possible to post it
on Dime or another P2P site? It would be most appreciated! Thanks.

Thanks for the review, Phil. I can't do standing at concerts anymore so I'm
hoping that next time she comes to Houston it'll be someplace that has seated
uhhhh, seating.

LOL, The Invasion of the White Rabbits on Leashes!! Those people need a
Rabbit Park!

The only complete songs I've heard from her new album is "Gimme Shelter",
I've heard just the brief clips on Amazon of the rest. I think that she'd
just absolutely KILL "Changing of the Guard". A Magic-based Dylan
Hallucination song covered by the Vision & Hallucination Queen, oh yeah. Sock
it to me! Besides, "Changing", along with "Precious Angel" and "Where Are
You Tonight" are WAY up in his Greatest Songs Ever. Period. G.E. Smith
entirely earned his complete life just for the great way he played the songs
from "Street Legal" on tour. WOW! Bob definitely needs to start
circulating them in his sets again. At least he did "Senor" fairly often on
his last couple of tours. Oh, and maybe his best song ever, "Idiot Wind"

Bowery Women: Poems
Bob Holman and Marjorie Tesser, Editors (Bowery Books)

Both local and universal in scope, the dynamic anthology Bowery
Women: Poems showcases one "signature poet" from scores of women who
have delighted, inspired, and shocked audiences at New York City's
Bowery Poetry Club performance space. Embodying the collection's
diversity, the poets reading this evening include Martha Rhodes,
founder of Four Way Books and the Readings on the Bowery series;
"hypnotic surrealist" poet and performer Janet Hamill; award-winning
poet and playwright Cynthia Kraman; Trinidadian artist and teacher
Cheryl Boyce Taylor; and former paramedic and guitarist Maggie Dubris.
Join us for a tribute to another great New York performance space and
the women who rock it.

A reception and book signing will follow the reading.

Patti Smith celebrates rock 'n' roll history
Sat May 5, 2:46 AM ET

NEW YORK (Billboard) - A musician, poet, activist and artist for more than 30
years, Patti Smith delves into covers territory on her new album, "Twelve."

The aptly titled 12-song set finds Smith interpreting songs made famous by
Nirvana ("Smells Like Teen Spirit"), Tears for Fears ("Everybody Wants to Rule
the World"), Jimi Hendrix ("Are You Experienced?") and others. Columbia issued
the set -- Smith's first album of new studio recordings since 2004's
"Trampin"' -- on April 17.

In March, Smith -- along with R.E.M., Van Halen, the Ronettes and Grandmaster
Flash & the Furious Five -- was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
This month, she embarks on a tour of Europe and the United States. Just before
the release of "Twelve," Smith chatted with Billboard about her parents'
influence, her place in the business and the art of interpretation.

Q: What does it mean to you to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame?

A: I love rock 'n' roll, and I love history. So, to be regarded as having some
influence or some import in the history of rock 'n' roll by an institution has
some meaning for me. I look at it as a touchstone. I feel like my people are
inducted, too. I'm still a relatively obscure artist -- in terms of commercial
success.

Also, it made my mom and dad really happy. And I made them unhappy a lot, so
I'm happy to make them happy. They were alive when I was first nominated about
eight years ago. My mother regretted on her dying day that she wasn't going to
be able to be there with me. But she asked me to play her favorite song, and I
did.

Q: Which song is that?

A: "Rock 'n' Roll N

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---
." My mom was, in some ways, always the lady and always conducted herself
respectfully, but she was also rebellious at heart. She loved rock 'n' roll.
She loved the spirit and philosophy of that song.

My mom answered my fan mail for about 25 years. She once had a letter from a
Mikey Stipe. And he has a letter from my mother. In the mid-'70s, a lot of gay
kids were disinherited or thrown out of the house by their parents, and my mom
was there for them.

Q: You were signed to Arista for nearly 30 years, and now you're part of the
Columbia family. How does an artist like Patti Smith work within the
major-label system?

A: They're obviously my patrons. Just like Leonardo da Vinci had the church,
I'm of the old school where I still rely on patronage -- and I'm grateful for
that patronage. That doesn't mean I pander to the music business. I try to be
respectful in a certain way to my patrons, in the way that they deserve. But I
don't make any compromises for them, and that's how I conduct my life. I'm not
a nihilistic punk rocker who doesn't care about anything. I do care.

Q: When you're gearing up for the release of a new album, what kind of
expectations do you have?

A: I always think all my albums are great and that they're going to be giant.
When I did "Horses," I never expected anybody to hear it, and then all these
people heard it. I got a lot of criticism from people when "Because the Night"
became popular. They said, "Oh, well, you've sold out." I basically said,
"F*** you." I don't make records for nobody to hear. I do records to share
information, ideas, music, values. I admittedly did "Horses" for marginalized
people like myself.

Q: Covering songs is not new for you. How do you approach songs made famous by
other artists?

A: First of all, I want to do justice to the person's song. Often, I'll pick a
song that I envy. Or one that moves me so much that I want to try it myself. I
also try to add another dimension to each song. Another goal of mine was to
present the songs in a certain way that you could really get the lyrics. So, a
lot of my attention for this record was focused on the inner narrative. It was
to present these songs lyrically.

Q: What can fans expect from your tour?

A: We're going to do all the songs on the record, and we'll also have another
15 or 20 cover songs ready to perform. In other words, "Twelve" will only be a
springboard. I want each night to be somewhat different. I want this tour to
be a celebration of the history of rock 'n' roll. I want people to remember
and think about all the great aspects of rock 'n' roll and also realize its
possibilities as our great cultural voice.

The Patti bit is being torrented on Demonoid.com as an XVID file. I
haven't got it down yet, so I can't speak to the quality. Looks good
though as the source was HDTV. So, if you're hip to torrents and
belong to Demonoid you can grab it.
