To my surprise there was a support act at Patti's gig last night. it was an irish trad band (made of Irish members, a canadian and a french person if i remember correctly). They were charming. For their last song Jackson Smith joined them. They announced that they had taught him to play guitar Irish style for about five mintues in hte dressing room. it seems that Patti and the band were in a popular pub in town called the Cobblestone on Friday night and approached these people asking them if they would support her. I'd be shocked if they even knew who she was.
Patti's gig opened with her strolling onto stage with the band and launching into a frenetic version of Gloria. This was a great way to open the show and got the energy level of the crowd whipped right up. She stayed on fairly safe territory with a trip down to redondo beach. She then reached for the clarinet and played an introduction to Are YOu Experienced. This was a great version, full of life and energy. Patti really seemed to be enjoying herself.
Patti's energy was great, she was in fantastic voice, she seemed to be enjoying the banter with the crowd. Patti came out of Free Money (which, as ever, was great) askinghte audience, in a sort of hypnotised tone of voice, if they had noticed her tripping on the cord, and she described hopping and jumping, and led into a story about a white rabbit which brough her into the song. I do not particularly like hte version on 12 but this was great. It is so clear what Patti is aiming for when you see it live. She was having fun.
Leading into My Blakean Year Patti strapped on her guitar and strummed while reciting a poem of sorts about hte hotel she is checked into. THis was funny. Rough gist " i booked into the callaghan hotel as it is next to the place where Oscar Wilde is born. but it turns out there are three callaghan hotels. i booked into the wrong one. i went to the writer's museum and drew on the energy of hte writesrs like joyce, and beckett, and wilde and dreamt abhout them i dreamt they were young lads writing and i was writing too and i dreamt of blake...etc etc... i woke up in hte wrong hotel". I obviously don't remember the details but it was good.
Before teen spirit a guy with a banjo came on and Patti mentioned that his name was Bill Whelan and i;m sure she mentioned that she met him in the cobblestone as well (although not sure). He played hwile she sang a song that i don't know, seemed sort of traditional/folky about a young guy not knowing what he is doing (again, that could be totally wrong). Then into a rousing verson of teen spirit.
Gimme Shelter was great. But major highlight was part of babelogued and r n r nigger which segued into gloria. Bookending hte show with Gloria was a great move.
To be honest i could not, even if i tried, remember all the songs in order, but i think it was something like this:
Gloria
Redondo Beach
Are You Experienced
Within You WIthout You
Beneath the SOuthern Cross
Free Money
Tripped on the cord/White Rabbit
Soul Kitchen
Wrong Hotel/My Blakean Year
Because the Night
Pissing in a River
Helpless
??
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Gimme Shelter
Babelogue/Rock n Roll Nigger/Gloria
