The Babel-list seems a little quiet right now so I thought Id take the
opportunity to tell you about Patti at the Misano Adriatico racetrack in Italy
last Saturday.
It was a warm evening at the Misano World Circuit which had been hosting World
Ducati Week 2007. Pattis concert was part of the Saturday Night Party for
the gathering of the Ducatisti as well as being part of the Notte Rosa
summer festival on the Romagnola coast.
Patti and the band appeared on stage around 10.30pm following a very
impressive firework display. She was given quite a lengthy and enthusiastic
introduction, first in Italian followed by a translation into English. I
probably dont need to tell you this but she was wearing blue jeans tucked
into her boots, white tee-shirt with CND logo and love and of course the
black jacket. However, she was then presented with a leather motorcycle jacket
(complete with her name on the back) as a gift from the Ducatisti. Removing
her black jacket in order to wear the new addition to her wardrobe, she began
the set with Redondo Beach.
The sky was clear with a bright full moon which Patti pointed out and gave us
one of those huge smiles. Increasing the tempo, Summer Cannibals was next on
the list. Things were definitely warming up and the leather jacket removed,
Patti walked to the edge of the stage with it slung over her shoulder. Third
number was Are You Experienced? For this the black jacket was reinstated, both
her voice and clarinet playing were in fine fettle, this one really got the
crowd going.
I think it was Ghost Dance next although Im just writing this from memory
and not entirely sure of the order of the set. Midnight Rider was dedicated to
all the Ducati riders, and to Fred (who was a big fan of Ducati and all things
Italian). Lenny and Jackson were both wearing red Ducati tee-shirts.
A great performance of Gimme Shelter had Patti dancing around and waving a
rainbow peace flag to reinforce the songs anti-war message. There was a cello
player on stage for the entire set, he appeared to be having a whale of a time
- Patti did introduce him, but sorry i've forgotten his name.
The rest of the set included People Have The Power, Smells Like Teen Spirit,
Because The Night and Gloria. The encore consisted of Perfect Day, Pissing In
A River and Babelogue/Rock n Roll Nigger complete with Patti ripping the
strings from her Fender. Patti gave a salute to the Ducatisti and they
reciprocated by revving their engines.
There was an official camera crew there and the concert was shown on two large
screens positioned on either side of the stage so hopefully an official DVD
might appear at some point in time? When Patti walked to the front of the
stage she was able to see what was happening on the TV screens and she took
that opportunity to point out to the crowd close-ups of Jacksons guitar solos
and watch them herself. I didnt actually need the TV screens from where I
was right at the front in the centre in fact close enough to make out the
small CND logo Patti had drawn on the left leg of her jeans.
Quite different to the other gigs on the Twelve tour (I think) in that Patti
didnt play acoustic guitar, there was no White Rabbit and no monologues
(apparently there were 28 different nations represented at this event, so
monologues in English probably werent the order of the day). However, Patti
on stage on a hot Italian night by full moonlight, what can I say? I wouldnt
have missed it for the world.
