Re: babel-digest V12 #173

August 6 in Minneapolis was also very enjoyable. Patti was as
talkative as I've seen in my 7 or shows seeing her (and very
entertaining!).
The State Theater, though lovely, was not as conducive to an
extraordinary show as First Avenue has been, where she's played the
past few times through town.
But great fun nonetheless.
Heres her set list from the State Theatre on Monday (from Star
Tribune--but matches my recollection):

1. Kimberly 2. Redondo Beach 3. Changing of the Guards (Bob Dylan) 4.
Are You Experienced (Jimi Hendrix) 5. Within You/Without You
(Beatles) 6. Southern Cross 7. We 3 8. Summer Cannibals 9. Pushing
Too Hard (Seeds song sung by Lenny Kaye) 10. White Rabbit (Jefferson
Airplane) 11. Because the Night 12. Soul Kitchen (Doors) 13. Midnight
Rider (Allman Bros) 14. Smells Like teen Spirit (Nirvana) 15. People
Have the Power

encores 16. Helpless (Neil Young) 17. Gimme Shelter (Stones) 18. Rock
n Roll Nigger

So, I was isolated at the shore Friday morning when
the Beacon went on sale and I am taking what I can
get at the Beacon.

I was only there once, and my impression was that the
downstairs was really really wide and one doesn't want
to be way off to the side, or you won't hear or see
much, and from others' reports of concerts there, my
understanding is that the same can be said for the
upper decks (the loge and the balcony).
I.e., the place swallows sightlines and sound whole.

> From folks who have been inside all over the place,
what's your opinion? Am I better off in the center
of the balcony than the last seat on the far right
in row J on the floor? Is the upper balcony a world
of difference from the lower balcony? Should I
pursue front and center orch at any cost because
anything else there is a waste of time?

My priority is not having sucky sound. I pretty much
know what everyone in the band looks like by now.

I've seen Patti 5 times now...
This was the most electrifying show/experience yet.
Setlist:
Kimberly
Space Monkey (Which she dedicated to me!!)
Are You Experienced?
Changing of the Guards
Within You/Without You
Beneath the Southern Cross (OMG! It now grows into this graceful jam
that
just soars!)
We Three
Summer Cannibals
Pushing
White Rabbit
Gimme Shelter
Because the Night
Soul Kitchen
Teen Spirit
People Have the Power
Peacable Kingdom
Gloria

A few notes:
She spoke about historical preservation of architecture, and the
importance
of keeping fuckers like Trump from trumping our history.
And of seeing a giant guinea pig in a neighboring yard, that later, she
realized, was a rabbit (Enter White Rabbit).
She sung to a very small child, maybe four years old, at the side of the
stage.
She ignored the drunk girl at the front of the stage that kept shouting
ridiculous things/insults.
Oh, and Jackson plays extremely well. Plus he's really cute :)

The venue was sold out, the crowd ravenous.

When she comes to YOUR town kids, get tickets.

Run, don't walk.

OMG, she does Changing of the Guard now??? DYLAN'S "Changing"?

WOW!!!! That must have been magnificent. Street Legal is
SUCH an
underestimated DylanAlbum! I'm thinking that I saw him open a
concert in
Austin with it once when the album was new. And in BobStyle opened with
something old the next night in Houston, I'm thinking "Masters of
War". He's
a shtinker :)

"I stumbled to my feet.
I rode past destruction in the ditches
With the stitches still mending 'neath a heart-shaped tattoo.
Renegade priests and treacherous young witches
Were handing out the flowers that I'd given to you."

That whole setlist sounds like a totally psychedelic concert. WOW!
