I always heard it as "heroin". I think it makes more sense in the context
of the song.

Patti, as we all know, is first and foremost a poet...... I have always
felt that she wrote "heroine", but understood that some would hear "heroin"
and
that was just fine with her- that it was perfect for the two meanings to
