Well what was really interesting to me, was near the end of the DC show, she
proclaimed "this next song is for ralph nader... Because I LOVE HIM!" and
she threw on one of those arabic scarves and launched into people have the
power (I think that was the song -- that would make sense right?!)
Judging from Jackson's power chords, I don't think we'll ever  see Ollie
share the stage with patti again. He is f*ckin amazing. I LOVE what he's
doing with Beneath the Southern Cross. He takes it to a whole new level.
And, anyway, what's wrong with a friend supporting an old friend or lover?
Maybe he has a new book coming out or something.  I wouldn't jump to
conclusions over this one, no more than I would think that Patti is about to
marry Ralph (now there's something to start a rumor about!)

I'm looking to trade with someone who has the Patti's recent shows at the Bowery Ballroom. I have plenty to trade so please contact me. I'd especially like to get the 12/29 show because they did Radio Ethiopia and it'd be nice to relive the experience of hearing live again for the first time in nearly 30 years! But then the 12/30 show with Joan Osbourne and friends and that great version of Highway 61 Revisited is a must have also.

That's really nice.  Thanks for posting it.  It's amazing to see a
concert that was just yesterday already on YouTube.  Was it you who
filmed it?

The Patti song is really nice.  What is it?  Near the end it's talking
about Benazir Bhutto so at least that part of the lyrics must be brand

That's really nice.  I saw your message, then the web site, then went
back to read your message again.  So it's a drawing?  When I first
looked at the picture I thought "he has made a stained glass window with
a picture of Patti".  It sort of looks like that:  a black-and-white
picture of a stained glass window.  The lines between sections of the
drawing are all hard black, like the lead between pieces of glass.  I
don't know if you work in stained glass or not, but in case you do, this
would make a wonderful window.  It's also beautiful just the way it is,
as a drawing.

First and foremost - a real pleasure sharing the floor with you folks on the
29th and 30th - first time for this event for me, looking forward to many

Secondly, I'm trying to track down Archie from Kentucky, who was going to
sell me his two tickets for the reading on the 18th of this month, at the

Baguio is in the northern part of the Philippines. It's in the mountain
province and we have a thriving+vibrant community of artists here.

  My name is Steven Sebring, I am a photographer and was raised in Arizona. I've lived now in New York City for about 15 years.
   
  WHAT INITIALLY ATTRACTED YOU TO FILMMAKING AND DO YOU EXPLORE OTHER CREATIVE OUTLETS? 
   
  Being a fashion and celebrity photographer led me to the idea of making my stills come to life, that was very interesting for me. Other creative outlets involve book publishing, creating photograph exhibits, and art installations. 
   
  HAVE YOU MADE OTHER FILMS? 
   
  I did not go to film school. I have experimented with film on my own for years. I have directed short films for some fashion clients like Coach and Donna Karan. I love bringing fashion into film and vice versa. 
   
  WHAT PROMPTED THE IDEA FOR "PATTI SMITH: DREAM OF LIFE" AND HOW DID IT EVOLVE? 
   
  I photographed Patti Smith for Spin magazine back in 1995. That was the first time we met. I became so interested in her that I convinced her to let me start filming when possible. By self-financing the film, touring, and traveling with her on and off for years the movie came to be... 12 years later we have "Dream of Life. " 
   
  ELABORATE A BIT ON YOUR APPROACH TO MAKING THE FILM.
   
  My approach to making this film was let it happen organically. There is no way to rush a film with a subject like Patti Smith. Patience and bringing in my experience as a photographer helped a lot. That is also how the style of the film became what it is. Unusual in it's approach and structure. 
   
  WHAT WERE SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU FACED IN DEVELOPING THE PROJECT?
   
  The biggest challenge I faced was just keeping my stamina going for 12 years, yet always knowing that this was a very important film that needed to be made. We do not have distribution yet but people are very interested in Patti Smith. She is unique. An extremely private person yet very influential... Going into this I had total respect and trust in her. We were just setting out to do something that felt new and positive to us.

  Being new to the industry of filmmaking it seems to me pretty scary! Just dealing with costs of publishing rights kinda makes it hard if not impossible to do exactly what you had planned. But with that in mind, it can make you a more creative filmmaker. The way I look at it, the more difficult the challenge the better.

Stained glass! What a great idea! Of course you'd have to use hues and tints
because its a face, not forgetting shadows--alot of work but it would look
great if it was done well!

I haven't heard Patti's New Year's Show yet, but it seems it will be very hard to top Patti's backing of Joan Osborne's performance the night before when she got her birthday wish, of having Osborne sing ST. That would be a great idea. I actually plan to do it on 3X5ft watercolor

I read this book, and Lenny did a nice job.  Full of details from that era of Columbo and Crosby.  It shows us how detailed and complex Lenny really is.  Now I need to have Lenny autograph the book for me.

I know..I know...I'm a bit late, but I've been busy as a bee, recording
with the band with producer James Mastro and engineer Mitch Easter at
Mitch's Fidelitorium studio in North Carolina.  James produced "Songs
For Bright Street" and is the 5th Tearjerk when he's not touring the
world with Ian Hunter and Patti Smith.  Mitch has produced 2 of my
favorite albums of all time-- R.E.M.'s "Murmur" and "Reckoning" and
worked on many many other great records by artists like Suzanne Vega
("Solitude Standing"), Game Theory and others.  You also might remember
his band Let's Active. We lurv Mitch and recording our next album at his
studio was just about the most fun I've ever had.  We just finished
tracking, we'll be mixing at the end of the month and hopefully it will
be coming your way sometime this coming summer.  I posted blogs about
the recording at myspace.com/amyspeace.



We've only got one show this month. Next month, a few shows in the
south, then I head to the UK to open for Ian Hunter on his acoustic tour
through March.  For the good folks in the NYC area, come out this week
for my ONLY JANUARY show!



Thursday, January 17th at 8pm

BANJO JIM'S at 9th Street and Avenue C. NYC  I'll be playing a pared
down set, probably all new songs we just recorded. It's a free show in a
cool bar. Later, Boo Reiners and Elena Skye will be joined by Lenny
Kaye, so you wanna come on down and get yourself a cold PBR.



More news: I'll be working with John Laird at The Americana Agency as my
booking agent, who I trust will keep me running around the country,
putting miles on my van.  John also works with good friends Jonathan
Byrd and Corrinne West, among other wonderful artists, so we're happy to
join the fold.



So snuggle up and have a wonderful rest of the first month of 2008.

Hi,
 
Has anyone heard how the premiere of Sebring's movie at Sundance went? I am  
very interested to see the movie myself, I hope that it will play in some of 
the  local Manhattan arthouses. It would also be great if it were available for 
 the Woodstock film fest in October!

It's amazing the lengths the ZFT is going to keep their beloved Frank out of the public's grasp.
Sporadic releases, a (for over a year) dysfuntional web site and now Gail going after fans and free flow information...What exactly is their point? The man is more understood and appreciated now (sadly) after his death. The world at large would be greatly sppreciative for a wellsrping of works including his films. Sad!

Patti Smith: I met Kevin when I curated the Meltdown Festival in 2005. I
had been living very simply in seclusion for all of the '80s until my
husbands death in '94, so I hadn't seen My Bloody Valentine perform-but
I love their albums. I was talking to Glenn Max (Meltdown producer)
about who I would dream of collaborating with, and I mentioned Kevin.
Glenn helped make it happen. There's 2 discs, two different
performances. The first one, form Meltdown, is more straightforward. The
second one was more emotional, more verbal improvisation, and the music
was a little louder. Kevin and I don't really repeat ourselves. It was
Kevin's idea to present these two different approaches to the same
piece. We have a lot of different ideas and I think both of us are
immersed in our own projects right now, but we wanted to document our
first collaboration. I have faith that Kevin and I will do other things
together.
