With a belated HUGE thanks to Gina, I will pass on copies of each show
to 3 people who promise to do the same.
Sorry, my life is quite busy right now so I have to limit it to three.
Email me your name and mailing address and I'll start the process.
Thanks,

Jeff Riedle in California

Wow I'm surprised to see this kind of message appear on this list.
I don't post very often at all but I always thought politics was discussed
pretty freely here.
When did it change?

I don't know, but I did wonder if the people who don't want to talk politics
here are the same people that go to Patti's gigs? If so, what do they do
when Patti starts singing Rock N Roll Nigger? Disappear to the bathroom?

While I'm here could I just clarify something I said on a previous post. The
thing I put in "quotes" about Nader's paperwork wasn't in quotes because it
was something Patti had said, it was in quotes as I was quoting from a
newspaper - nothing to do with Patti. Sorry if I confused anyone.

What I said about hoping Patti says whatever she wants at the Lincoln Centre
was because I was fed up with people on this list blaming her (indirectly,
perhaps) for everything from Bush being elected to what happened on 9/11.

Anyway, any reports from people who were at the Lincoln Centre last night?
What was the setlist? What stories did she tell....

Personally, I read this list for Patti specific information, notes, concert
updates, the sense of community, etc. I'm aware of the thin thread of
connection between herself and Mr. Nader, but *this thread* quickly became
non-Patti and spiralled down the path of who was right and who was wrong,
politically speaking, with virtually no Patti relevance. Best guess is that
there better forums to continue that dialogue.

In the interim, I like your last paragraph best. =]

I disagree with the idea that we should only talk about Patti, her music,
setlists, etc. She is very political and provocative in her music, and the way
she talks with audiences at times, for example urging them to vote. And
what do you think "People Have the Power" is? An anthem for athletes, lol?
Although it actually could be that, in the sense that we all have the power to
do what is important to us. However, I think the main message of PHTP is we
have the power to change our world- we just have to get up, take action, and
open our mouths to do it- a very political stance, IMHO.

Patt's unfortunate support for Nader is just as valid to me for discussion
as might be the setlist at Lincoln Center, a new album, etc. As I said in a
previous post, it's hard for me to reconcile my love of Patti as an artist
with her support of Nader, who I think is a spoiler, and is too intelligent not
to know it. For that matter, so is Patti.

Who was the original poster? I didn't read thru all the posts and can't
figure out who exactly did start this. My input was just that--input based
on skimming over the top--I can't find the original thread--just one reply
from Anthony R. ???

I've seen plenty of freewheeling political
discussion here over the years with no clampdown.

But for 7 years now, pretty much anywhere you
go on the 'net, the mere mention of Ralph's name
produces exchanges pretty much summed up as:

  "Ralph spoiled 2000."
  "Did not!"
  "Did!"
  "Did not!"
"Oh, he SO did, you pigfucker!"

  [...and on and on...]

And Ralph's name comes up here more than in many
other places because of Patti's support for him
over the years. Still, that's a flimsy excuse
for another Ralph flame war.

So after 7 years of this, I think the man in charge
has every right to make the call he did, as guilty as I
am personally of diving in pretty much every time
it happens.

It should be possible in 2008 for someone to report
the facts of Ralph Nader's latest political activity
(yes, Patti content), without another tired pissing
match following like day follows night.

Music Review | Patti Smith
Patti Smith in the Parlor, Still Raw and Rock bnb Roll
By _STEPHEN HOLDEN_
(http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/h/stephen_holden/
index.html?inline=nyt-per)

For some musicians the ordinary rules just donbt apply. I would call the
intangible quality that makes ignoring them possible purity of soul. More than
artistic integrity, it has a mystical component and requires the listener to
make a leap of faith.
That quality has always defined _Patti Smith_
(http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/s/patti_smith/ind
ex.html?inline=nyt-per) , the
shamanistic poet, proto-punk-rocker and voice in the wilderness who closed
_Lincoln Center_
(http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/l/lincoln_
center_for_the_performing_arts/index.html?inline=nyt-org) bs
American Songbook series this season at the Allen Room on Saturday with a
program consisting largely of popular standards.
Performing songs she lovingly associated with her parents, she was
accompanied by a trio that included Luis Resto on piano, Paul Nowinski on bass
and her
son, Jackson Smith, on acoustic guitar.
The quavering, ragged-but-stalwart voice she brought to bStar Dust,b bMy
Funny Valentine,b bAutumn Leaves,b bIbll Be Seeing Youb and others
was a
quieter, lower-register variation of the fervent rock intensity she imparted
to
several of her best-known songs.
But even in a quiet mode, playing the grown-up daughter sitting with hands
folded on her lap in the parlor, her singing suggested the spiritual call to
commitment of a rock bnb roll Joan of Arc. Of how many performers can it
be
said that being 61 going on 16 doesnbt look at all ridiculous?
The show brought to mind _Willie Nelson_
(http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/n/willie_nelson/i
ndex.html?inline=nyt-per) bs b
Stardustb album, the 30-year-old masterpiece of laconic pop tribute in
which Mr.
Nelson drove the great American songbook from Austin to El Paso in a
covered-wagon caravan.
Where Mr. Nelsonbs spare, guitar-oriented versions of standards were
flattened into a plain country-folk vernacular, Ms. Smithbs were downright
raw. She
didnbt carefully memorize all the lyrics and often interpolated her
approximations of rhymes as she went along. Melodies were spontaneously
adjusted, the
better to get from here to there without uncomfortable transitions.
Especially at the beginning of the show, she seemed to be feeling her way.
Then her confidence kicked in. She sang a teenage pop trinket b Kathy
Youngb
s 1960 hit, bA Thousand Starsb b with a primal throb that minutes later
infused Hank Williamsbs bIbm So Lonesome I Could Cry.b Her dark,
dramatic
version of bDonbt Smoke in Bedb held its own beside interpretations by
_Peggy
Lee_
(http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/l/peggy_lee/index
.html?inline=nyt-per) , Nina Simone and _K. D. Lang_
(http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/l/k_d_lang/index.
html?inline=nyt-per) .
A quiet, brooding bAutumn Leavesb located the grief at the bottom of the
song.
Her biggest hit, bBecause the Night,b elicited an intimate recollection of
the courtship with her husband, Fred (Sonic) Smith, who died in 1994, in which
an anxious evening spent waiting for his phone call found its way into the
lyrics. In bPeople Have the Powerb and bDancing Barefootb her
exhortatory
powers provoked a euphoric communal trance.
As emphatically as popular-music purists would dismiss Ms. Smithbs handling
of standards, for my money academic purism was trumped by her purity of soul,
which after all these years remains untainted.

And I'm not getting love letters from Patti.....
....and not getting paid or laid.... or richer,
younger....

I'm one sorry old sonofabitch, too.

Not that you're one, but if there's any other
list members who could use some company
for their misery, you know where to find me.

Seena, dear!!

"Star Dust, My Funny Valentine, Autumn Leaves, l'll Be Seeing Youb and
others..."

Oh Seena!! What a fantastic evening this must've been......did anyone see
this (You?)
Its JUST the kind of Patti gig I'd really be SO interested in seeing...not
that every Patti gig doesn't have its charm, this in particular is so, well,
charming! Those songs are so right for her--torch songs.

In other, non-Patti-but-Patti-kind-of-stuff, (lol!) I watched La Vie en Rose
for the first time a couple days ago. So wonderful, and the songs reminded
me of Patti's. The actress who played Piaf reminded me of Patti in her
strength, which of course was Edith's strength, and truly inspired me. Now I
hear of this wonderful evening.. I hope someone caught it on "tape".
Please someone let me know if its out there and where/how to obtain a copy!
THIS one I really would love to hear.

Thankyou so much for this review/pix--truly a "Because The Night" night.

XOXO-Glenna

Sorry Paul---and hoping acbv is getting digested right now--for all the

Any resolve to the general dismal tone of this nation would be a welcome

There's a tongue-in-cheek article on Ralph in this week's Time Mag

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1718578,00.html

The title is "How Sorry is this Guy" and the author talks about how
Nader should make a joke out of it, for example:

Nader would come out onstage to Britney Spears' Oops! ... I Did It Again
and maybe do one of those supershort apology trips to rehab, blaming his
involvement in the 2000 election on Quaaludes or yerba mate or whatever
drug someone like Ralph Nader might take.

No worries.

It's infinitely more enthralling than the bickering over Nader et al going
on here lately.

Everyone has a view point but does it need to be aired endlessly on this
group?

Dave

A slightly belated reply to this one but I just wanted to say that I saw
'Dream of Life' at the Berlin Film Festival last month and it was really
well received there. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and wouldn't hesitate
to see it again. As mentioned below, it does include footage of Patti at
various political rallies, but there is much more to it than that, as Patti
says, it's an eleven-year slice of life. It was both entertaining and
informative and Patti's sense of humour shone through.

Thank you for posting the interview with Patti, it was interesting to read
what she had to say about the three main Democrat candidates (there were
three then!)

I've just been reading an interview with Ralph Nader in the Village Voice in
which they asked him if there were any mainstream candidates in the
Democratic Party that he would have supported instead of running?

Here's the link to that interview:

Glenna- I tried so hard to get tix to this one, but they were sold out
before I could blink!!!! I would have loved hearing Patti sing all those
standards- I'm a huge fan of that kind of music, the "American songbook" or whatever
they call it! I too would be interested getting in a copy of it.
Haven't seen the Piaf flick yet but it sounds good. I'm sure Patti would
appreciate it. There are so few singers that truly reach their listeners'
souls like Smith and Piaf! xxo- Seena

Surprisingly, I still need two more people who want this. Last chance
to let me know...

With a belated HUGE thanks to Gina, I will pass on copies of each show
to 3 people who promise to do the same.
Sorry, my life is quite busy right now so I have to limit it to three.
Email me your name and mailing address and I'll start the process.
Thanks,

Don't know if anyone else noticed, but if I recall correctly, in Juno
there's a quick shot in her bedroom where there is a stack of records (yes,
vinyl) against her bed, and the one in front is Horses.

I didn't watch the Oscars ceremony this year, but I noticed in the reports
afterwards that there was some oblique Patti content. The best supporting
actress award went to Tilda Swinton, who I know is a Patti-fan, as she once
sat next to me during one of Patti's performances in London. Also, best
original screenplay went to Juno - and Patti gets mentioned by one of the
characters in that film.

Kind regards

Andrew

Nah, Mitch--I'm just trying to find out who 'dropped out' after posting the
1st thing in this thread. I didn't read much or post but once--and it wasn't
a hateful one, as you probably read! I'm just interested that someone said
the person that started this thread is 'no longer with us' and what that
means! No longer on the planet?! I'm sad!!! No longer on Babel-list? I
probably have his/her email anyway, and he/she will probably come back, as
is in my (and most likely YOUR) experience!!

Cheers to you, hope you're doing fine!!

hi babellistas!

do you believe this: mail a request to arte tv and they send you the movie immediately - for free?!

i don't know if it works overseas (different country code?), but it's worth a try. mail to: vera.berger

i start feeling a little sorry for them... buried in requests. in fact, arte is the coolest channel, no shit.
*patti smith: dream of life* can be seen on arte tv on tuesday, 25. march, 11 pm.

hi babellistas!

do you believe this: mail a request to arte tv and they send you the movie
immediately - for free?!

i don't know if it works overseas (different country code?), but it's worth
a try. mail to: vera.berger

i start feeling a little sorry for them... buried in requests. in fact, arte
is the coolest channel, no shit.
*patti smith: dream of life* can be seen on arte tv on tuesday, 25. march,
11 pm.
