Portrait of the artist: Patti Smith, musician

Interview by Laura Barnett
Tuesday, 1 April 2008, The Guardian

What got you started?

My mother giving me a copy of Songs of Innocence by William Blake when
I was about seven. I was immediately drawn to the way he combined his
poems with calligraphy and drawing.

What was your big breakthrough?

Meeting [the late photographer] Robert Mapplethorpe in New York City
when we were both 20. He was so gifted, confident and committed; with
him, art became part of my daily vocabulary.

What have you sacrificed for your art?

The blessed curse of the artist is always to remain on the outside,
reprocessing every situation. Sometimes I used to wish I could just
enjoy myself.

What work of art would you like to own?

Brancusi's sculpture The Prodigal Son. His work is about simplicity of
the highest order.

Which were the first films you loved?

Funny Face with Audrey Hepburn - it's about an idealistic girl who
works in a bookstore and dreams of meeting philosophers. I was just
like her. And Carl Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc - its use of
close-ups was revolutionary.

Which songs would feature on the soundtrack to your life?

People Have the Power, which represents how I feel about our
collective power, and a modest little song called Wing. I wrote it
just after the death of my husband and my brother [in 1994]; it
reminded me to be happy to be alive.

Which art form do you feel most comfortable in - art, poetry or music?

I'm very comfortable on stage. Music isn't really the vocation I chose
- I really strive as an artist and writer - but I love to make an
audience laugh.

What advice would you give a young artist just starting out?

Stay focused. In the end, you won't be remembered for your looks, or
for taking a lot of drugs. Only the work will remain - so make it
good.

What's the greatest threat to art today?

Its corporatisation. Becoming too involved in the selling of art
drains the blood from both the work and the artist.

Who would you most like to work with?

The opera singer Waltraud Meyer. More than work with her, I would like
to ask her about her inspiration. I'm sure she could teach me a lot.

Complete this sentence: At heart I'm just a frustrated ...

Opera singer.

What's the best advice anyone ever gave you?

When I was very young, William Burroughs told me to build up my name
by the merit of my deeds and my work. I said: "But William, my name is
Smith." Then I remembered that "smith" means "worker". And that's
exactly what I am.

In short

Born: Chicago, 1946

Career: Has released 10 studio albums, including Horses (1975), and
nine books of poetry. Her photography, drawings, films and writings
are at the Fondation Cartier, Paris, until June 22. Info:

Low point: "Feeling so much guilt about Vietnam in 1973 that art
seemed superfluous. Then I found rock'n'roll."

High point: "Right now. I'm 61, and people still appreciate my work."

The Fondation Cartier website is now showing an extract from the video
recording of the Soirie Virginia Woolf held on 28 March 2008. This
includes Patti's opening remarks and "Virginia of the Stones", an
improvisation including readings from Woolf's 1931 novel The Waves,
accompanied by Jesse Smith on piano.

Patti Smith's 'barefoot' style has stood the test of time
By Lisa Armstrong
>From The Times, Wednesday, 2 April 2008

Talking of growing up, Patti Smith's exhibition of sketches,
photographs and films has just opened at Fondation Cartier in Paris.
Smith - now, incredibly, 61 - tells this month's French Vogue: "I've
never struggled against the passing years. I just ignore them. My
parents always worked and I've always worked. I'm like a farmer who
has to till the fields whether he's 20 or 90" - a farmer who happened
to collaborate with some of the seminal creatives of the 20th century,
including Robert Mapplethorpe, William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg.

Smith's is undeniably a style that has stood the test of time. Baldly,
it's white shirts or T-shirts, men's trousers (she practically
invented the current strain of sartorial minimalism), scrubbed face
and wild black hair, now streaked with dignified shafts of grey, as
untamed and free a metaphor as Amy Winehouse's surreal beehive is an
emblem of a subjugated, orderly discipline that seems lacking from the
rest of her life.

Thirty years on from her ground-breaking rock poetry album, Horses,
Smith is still working the same look and, for all any of us know, the
very same items of clothing. How ecological. Granted, the rigorous
androgyny slides into full-on scary Iggy Popness these days, but you'd
have to say that, on the whole, it has served her well, and the
millions of women who have adopted a similar understated approach.

There are several lessons here, and, yes, one of them is that bad
girls do get the lion's share of good outfits. While Smith has always
maintained that her wasted looks are the results of a sickly
childhood, rather than drugs, there was more than a whiff of hedonism
about her. The difference is that in the 1970s, drug-taking quaintly
unfolded behind closed doors rather than on YouTube. Its symptoms were
obliquely alluded to, as opposed to being itemised in Grazia. They
certainly weren't turned into commodities by cynical fashion brands.

The other lesson is about keeping things simple, particularly as one
ages. "Elegance is refusal," as Diana Vreeland said and, although she
encountered the odd obstacle in following her own advice (don't we
all?), she was right.

A well-cut jacket, expensive "basics", accessories that are the
antithesis of "try hard" (Smith is a barefoot or sneakers kind of
girl), clothes that are beautifully cut with an inbuilt slouchiness
that allows real figures to feel at ease in a flattering state of
grace - these are genuine must-have items, and worth saving for.
Luckily, tailoring is about to have a fashion moment again (R.I.P.
frou-frou frills and body-con bandage dresses). So, if you can just
get through this summer without succumbing to parishiltonitis, I
strongly urge you to do so.

I've been off the list for a couple of weeks and just catching up when I saw
this post.

I've never seen/heard this recording, but I would LOVE a copy. Chances are
good I was at that show.

First off, we can rule out November 1976...she wasn't here then. Its gotta
be Nov 1975 or Feb 1976.

Patti did play the Boarding House in San Francisco in November 1975. I
remember those shows as being fairly straightforward...this was right after
the release of Horses. The Live at the Bottom Line bootleg is about 4-6
weeks later and gives a good feel for her shows at the time.

The setlist that L French posted as being "PATTI SMITH -- FUCKED UP IN SAN
FRANCISCO
November 16, 1976 - Live at the Boarding House" matches the 11/21/75 list on
the Patti setlists site. More on this in a minute. The Nov 16, 1976 date
is undoubtedly an error.

On November 23, 1975 she played two sets at the Longbranch in Berkeley, just
across the bay. I have a recording of thoses shows, which is also full of
monologues and audience dialogue. The volume is uneven -- the music comes
through okay but you need to turn it up to hear the monologues, etc.
clearly. These are still clearly regular sets, there's just a lot of
talking in between the songs. The (partial) set lists are on the setlist
site.

In February 1976, she did a 5-night run (Wed 2/11 - Sun 2/15) at the
Boarding Housing. A recording of the 2/15/76 show was weeded here several
months ago. Very similar to the Teenage Perversity and Ships in the Night
bootleg, which was recorded in Los Angeles just a couple of weeks earlier,
except the Boarding Housing show included a fabulous reading of an old piece
she wrote for Crawdaddy magazine that segues into an improvised narration of
the murder of Sal Mineo (which happened just a couple of nights earlier in
Hollywood).

On Tuesday, Feb 17, 1976, she played the Longbranch in Berkeley. That was
also a more typical show. I remember that actress Erica Gavin (from Russ
Meyer's Vixen and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls) was part of her entourage,
and I remember my friend (owner of a local record store) backstage
frantically trying to transcribe Patti's copy of Jim Morrison's American
Prayer until Patti grabbed it and ran onstage, where she read from it.
But while there was a lot of interaction with the audience, it was more or
less a regular set, although perhaps rougher than the Boarding House shows.

So here's where my my memory isn't entirely clear, but I think this is what
happened:

In November 1975, Patti played one or more shows at the Boarding House.
These were fairly straightforward sets. While these don't show up on the
setlist site, I've found other references that would suggest dates around
11/15/75

If I remember right, she then went down to Los Angeles for a couple of
nights, and returned to the Bay Area where she performed what was billed as
a poetry reading at the Boarding House. Eventually she ended up with the
entire band onstage. I think that is what the 11/21/75 show is, and
probably is what L French came across. I was at the "poetry reading"
show, and it was pretty chaotic and she seemed to be pretty fucked up, all
of which fits with the setlist.

Finally, there are some photos of Patti that are billed as being at the
Boarding House on 11/21/75:

http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/tx/search/search.html?t=patti%20smith%201975

So....I think the recording in question is from the 11/12/1975 "poetry
reading".

And I would LOVE to get a copy of this.

I was just listening to a recording of Patti performing at The Boarding
House in San Francisco, which I believe was probably from November, 1976 and
I must say this is one of the most unusual performances I've ever heard
Patti give!

The reason this show is so strange, is because it's basically one long Patti
monologue, with only five or six songs thrown into the mix. If it is from
November, 1976, it's even stranger, because two days later I actually saw
Patti perform a brilliant, incredibly tight set in Hartford, Conn. - and it
was only the second time I had seen her live!!

Listening to the SF show now, I really liked the free-flowing
improvisational nature of it, but I wonder what I would have thought if I
heard this long seemingly endless rant as only my second exposure to
Patti... I think it might have actually turned me off to her.

Anyway, there also seems to be some confusion about what year the show
actually occurred... '75 or 76, so if J or anyone else out there can shed
any light on the correct year (and possibly even the venue), please feel
free to add your thoughts.

According to the PSG setlists it took place on 11/21/75 - but it seems to me
that wouldn't make sense, since Andy Paley is playing on the keyboards
(replacing DNV).

Here's the set list which conveys some idea of the very loose nature of this
show:

PATTI SMITH -- FUCKED UP IN SAN FRANCISCO
November 16, 1976 Live at the Boarding House

Okay, after an e-mail exchange with L French, it appears my posting the
other night (see below) was wrong.

Patti WAS in the Bay Area in November 1976 and played a (rather chaotic and
less than inspired) show at the Berkeley Community Theater on Nov 12. The
recording L French has is probably from a "poetry reading" that happened
after the band had been to los angeles (Nov 15?) and then returned to SF.

So perhaps the date on that recording is indeed November 16, 1976. And I
would then guess that the listing on the Patti Smith setlists site for
Boarding Housing - 11/21/75 is incorrect, and really is Boarding House -
11/16/76. That makes more sense....the setlist includes Radio Ethiopia,
which doesn't show up on any other setlists until May 1976.

Patti may have played the boarding house on 11/21/75 -- I've come across a
photo that says "Boarding Housing 11/21/75" but the setlist would have been
different from what's posted on the setlist site.

But
while there was a lot of interaction with the audience, it was more or less
a regular set, although perhaps rougher than the Boarding House shows.

Introduction & rap (Im all fucked up)
Seventh Heaven (poem - interrupted for a sound check)
Guitar feedback Improvisation (Give me more light Moe)
Rap: The New Jersey Triangle
Rap: Think of a John Ford Movie
Jesse James (poem- Picture Hanging Blues)
Interlude: If I fell (The Beatles) one verse
Free Money
Aint It Strange (w/ totally improvised Alexander in Babylon lyrics) Redondo
Beach Edie Sedgwick (poem) Today I Met The Boy I'm Going To Marry (Darlene
Love song) Moroccan improvisation (w/poem - Ballad of a Bad Boy) Radio
Ethiopia (Lenny doing Iguana lizard lyrics) /
Abyssinia (piano/guitar solo)
Deep in the Heart of me ("The Ethiopian Crawl")

Encores:

A Letter to Johnny Carson - from Jesus Christ
My Generation
Gloria

The Band: Lenny, Ivan, Jay Dee, Andy Paley & Steve Foxx

Now compare the SF set list to a show just two days later - when I saw
Patti for only the second time, at the Bushnell Auditorium, in Hartford Conn
(on November 18, 1976) doing a truly killer show:

Were Gonna Have a Real Good Time Together

Hi Babelisters and Cafe Dwellers,

For those in the Los Angeles area, I have to tickets to the Nick Lowe/Robyn Hitchcock show this coming Friday, April 11 8pm at the El Rey Theater that I can't use. They are available at below my cost. $75 for the pair. It's going to be an incredible show at a very intimate venue. I'm kicking myself that I won't be able to be there. Please get in touch offlist if interested and we can arrange to meet up. Thanks.

Phil

The Philadelphia City Paper is not so crazy about it:

If you've ever wanted to hang with Patti Smith, now's
your chance. Steven Sebring spent 10 years shadowing
the sharp-featured punk poet, but his lengthy tenure
doesn't seem to have cracked her shell. Shot in
grainy black and white, the movie follows Smith on
stage and off, finally pinning her down for an
uncomfortable interview in her apartment. But apart
from a visit with her parents, who reminisce about
driving in to see Smith at the Trocadero, there's
nothing revealed that Smith hasn't bared more
    eloquently in her songs. - S.A. (April 15, 7:15 p.m.,

Right off the bat I wouldn't be too crazy about it either.

Sebring sounds like a stalker with a super 8. Smells like a
paparazzi (I can't spell in Italian, but you know the ones)
in punk clothing to me.

If Patti doesn't open her shell and invite you in, just leave
her alone.

I haven't seen it, so my opinion is purely from the knee.
I would trust a Philly paper enough not to be inspired to
pay to see it, though.

Love and crackers,

Paul

PS. My old hood was granted 80 million for an art house movie
complex last week. Now we have to try to bring the music back.
A lot of the money is going into some new technology that will
enrich the movie viewing experience and give the projectionist
more control over sound and other digital age things that are over
my head. All I have to do with anything is keep the above web
site updated.... which I haven't been doing. Gotta look good to
be persuasive. And don't push from behind when on the
train, Sebring (!)

Some of you might already be aware of Cookie Cutter Girl's stage
accident that left her with a broken back. It's serious and she's
been asking for anyone who can suggest things for her recovery
and possible legal help.

I remember Patti having to where a neck brace and getting
physical therapy.... and going through a tough time.

Jenny and I are talking off list about yoga. Here's CC Girl's
site. Send her your love and anything that those of you who
were close to Patti in the neck brace days know what she
was doing for herself that worked for her healing. CCG doesn't
have the health insurance resources Arista gave Patti, but
I think, if nothing else, the psychic push from Patti fans can
help Cookie Cutter Girl.

Patti Smith: Dream of Life

STEVEN SEBRING
USA, 2008, 109 minutes, Color and Black & White

In Person: Patti Smith and Director Steven Sebring

Winner of the cinematography prize at Sundance for director Steven Sebring, Patti Smith: Dream of Life is a hypnotic plunge, a breathing collage of this legendary musician/poet/painter/activist's philosophy and artistry that feels as if it sprang directly from her soul. A punk pioneer and spiritual child of Rimbaud, Blake, and Burroughs, Patti Smith's fierce poetry and rock music shook up New York's 1970s underground scene, and her work continues to be stirred organically by her rigorous mind, beloved artistic touchstones, and world events. Shot over 11 years, the film travels Smith's mystical interior terrain-the ideas, losses, and memories she wrestles with-and traces her outward adventures. Layered with mesmerizing recitations, music, and narration, the fluid journey incorporates performances, graveyard pilgrimages and political rallies, archival nuggets, and viriti moments with her working-class parents, children, and friends.-2008 Sundance Film Festival

Woo-Hoo! Awesome flick. If you've been along for the whole ride
non-stop since 1995, be prepared to watch your life flash before
your eyes. Particularly when you realize how friggin' YOUNG
Jackson was when he was guesting for "Smoke on the Water" for
those "Gone Again" shows in '96. (Jackson was in the audience
and apparently found that old footage very amusing.)

It's nothing remotely like a concert film - don't go if
that's what you want - and barely resembles a rockumentary.
It's really a loving (and yeah, I guess occasionally stalky)
tribute to PS, and it covers all facets of her artistic
inspiration, from poetry to painting to music, etc. But
there's enough backstage shenanigans and monkee-ing around
by the guys to make the pulse quicken.

Nothing is really dated or narrated, and it only barely follows
time in a linear fashion, so you may find yourself doing a
lot of that yourself during the film - identifying her
hairstyle or pants as coming from some particular tour
or year, e.g. I'm not really sure what experience someone
would have seeing this film who is not familiar with her
progress through the years, but at least the way her kids
grow up is a clue that things were filmed over a long period.

The film decompresses at the end very nicely and it's like
being put back down by a gentle hand - the eye of the filmmaker
and Patti's poetry. Awesome. And kudos to PS for not vetoing
some (now) potentially embarrassing stuff.

I think the film's got an unfortunate beginning - it screams
"film student's first effort" visually, and while it makes
sense to have Patti rattling off her biography and getting
it out of the way, she often sounds stilted or uncomfortable
when doing it, and unfortunately, this film is no counterexample.

But I'm not complaining. A long wait, and worth it.

Two thumbs up!

Oh! And Sebring said there will be extra footage on the
DVD! And Patti and Jackson performed "Grateful", "Because
the Night", and PHTP after the Q&A. Patti also said that
what she personally enjoyed about the film was the fact
that she could feel Fred's presence and influence all
through it. Um.. that's all I can remember right now.

But it's here! It's really here!!!!

So anyway, you couldn't buy an advance ticket to the
PS:DoL screening without opting for the $45 party
combo.

(As it turns out, about 2 dozen $15 screening-only
tickets did get sold at the box office shortly before
showtime.)

The party was divided into an 80s-new-wave dance room
for Gen-Yers like myself, and a punk-rock room where PS
music was played exclusively (at an extremely low
volume). The tables in the latter were done up with
faux black-leather tablecloths with zippers and
safetypins, and the centerpieces were little low-end
(but very real) Fender amps, with lilies
(ObMapplethorpe) draped across the top. Some of them
had reproductions of 70s ticket stubs and copies
of Patti's hand-written lyrics, scrolled and tied
on the top.

I also saw some 12" flats for twelve (left alone in
the new wave room), and the stairway was decorated
with great album and single artwork through the years.
The piece de resistance? On one of the serving tables
between the two rooms, a picture-sleeve for the 7"
of "Pumping (My Heart)" (which basically looks like
a shrunken cover of the "Radio Ethiopia" album),
stuck in the strings of a Fender guitar. I had never
seen one "in the flesh" so to speak, and I was hypnotized.

I so, SO totally wanted to steal that. (the single,
not the guitar)

They probably just threw it all away, anyway... :(

it depends.
3 different recordings of that show are torrented on the net. there is no artwork for the best-sounding one at http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/showthread.php?t=53614

there is artwork for the first of these lesser-sounding versions:

However, I don't think that any of these are the ones you're looking for...

In a box inside another box underneath three more boxes
behind several dusty suit cases and bags of clothes in an
old shed that shelters the bones of my rebellious youth.
That is where you will find a treasure trove of tons of very
old Patti stuff. I should dig it out and do the E Bay thing,
but I'm too burned out and occupied with other things.

Next time I get near it, I'll grab it, make a copy and it's
yours for the cost of postage.

I have a 3 foot by 3 foot cardboard display of the Easter
cover I'll give to an artist who could do something with
it. There's some water damage, but it's usable with some
imagination.

Just posted at Dime. Sounds like a must have.

http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=193844

-fernando

Quoting from the poster:

"This nearly three-hour madhouse comprises the last
time the original group would officially get together
for a concert. From paparazzi take-overs and audience
fistfights to an electrical blackout ending the show,
on a night when the punk movement finally ate itself -
it's a fitting end for this group, as you will see.

This ludicrously expensive 3cd set ($60 USD!) was
privately issued and is extremely rare. Inside the
booklet are the following notes. My additions are in
parentheses:

"Although the sound quality contained on these discs
may not be equal to modern standards, Strider believes
that the historical nature of these recordings begs
for release. 'Last Of The Originals'(set title d.)
documents the final official concert by the original
Patti Smith Group before Patti went into a
self-imposed exile. The band would perform only one
more concert in 1980 wihch was actually more of a
loose jam done for charity.

"The date is 9.10.79 (US dating d.). The place is
Florence, Italy. Early in the show, Patti chases the
photographers from the pit and invites the audience to
occupy the space at the very front of the stage. This
proves to be a disaster when fights break out between
the audience and security forces. Patti tries to calm
things but has to admonish rowdy audience members to
"stay off my stage". It's a losing battle and towards
the end of the 3 hour concert, the audience overruns
the stage leaving causing and electrical blackout.
"You Light Up My Life" is performed only with piano.
Efforts to restore power fail and Patti bids farewell
in Italian."

I'll have this downloaded by tomorrow and will be
happy to start a weed. I'll announce when I'm ready -
kind of a lot going on right now. But I'll send out 3
- maybe 5 copies to people that promise to do the
same.

Look for that announcement in the coming days.

As Andrew first reported earlier, Pattis lauded spoken word performance of THE CORAL SEA will finally be released on July 11, via a new Label called Pask, that theyve apparently specifically set-up for this release.

Here are some more details:

++++++++++++++++++++

Legendary artist Patti Smith and My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields are set to release a double-disc set of their live performance of THE CORAL SEA on July 11, 2008 on their own PASK label.

The recordings were made June 22, 2005 and September 12, 2006, respectively at sold-out performances at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. The set will run almost two-hours with a different stylistic approach to each performance. The UK's Guardian upon reviewing the 2005 performance gave it 5 stars and called it "magical."

One critic said of the live performance: kind of screaming requiem, THE CORAL SEA describes Mapplethorpe's terminal illness. Intense, layered electronics surged to a discordant climax as Patti Smith read her poem, the words sailing over the noise like an ocean liner, with the black-and-white video showing the ocean, the liner and the gray twilight of grief. The poem tells the story of the Passenger M (Mapplethorpe) on a final voyage south of the equator, to gaze at the stars of the Southern Cross before he dies.

Patti Smith and Kevin Shields will act as their own producers for the CD.

With the July release of THE CORAL SEA now set, here are some of Patti's comments about the objects in the room she has devoted to RM at her Paris art show:

THE CORAL SEA room

The photographs seen on entering The Coral Sea room include one of a tambourine. Robert Mapplethorpe gave me the tambourine, which he fashioned himself, on December 30, 1968. It was my twenty-first birthday.
Robert stretched the goatskin after tattooing my sign (Capricorn the goat)
upon its surface. He added the silk ribbons to give it a gypsy feel.
He used to say he was my gypsy and I his sheperd girl.

Opposite, the guitar seen in the two pictures belongs to Kevin Shields, the founder of My Bloody Valentine. They were taken on the day that he and I performed The Coral Sea in London in memory of Robert, on June 22, 2006.

The Coral Sea room is a memorial to Robert.
It stands in homage to his sensibilities and to the colors I associate with him, as does the formal presentation.
It is a place intended for people to sit and contemplate, or to watch the sea.
The film of the sea was shot by Jem Cohen in 16mm, over several hours.

I like to come in here and meditate and think of Robert, but it is not a sad room.
I remember him as a living artist, someone who lives within me.

The Estate of Robert Mapplethorpe printed five photographs, taken by Robert, so that I could incorporate some lines and words in silent collaboration.
They hang parallel and behind the installation.

All the elements in this room are mine.
All are precious: the cloth, a simple piece of French linen, is about 100 years old; the chalice is African carved from driftwood; the slippers belonged to Pope Benedict XV, the very humble pope who canonized Joan of Arc in the early 20th century.

The Coral Sea room serves Roberts memory.

So I have this show on my hard drive and for the
luddites on this list that can't or won't download,
I'm willing to send out four copies to people that
promise to do the same. I'll send 3 copies in the U.S.
and 1 copy overseas.

So the first 3 U.S. residents and first auslander that
send me name and mailing address will recieve copies
from me. The hope being that they will in turn make
the same offer. Disks will go out mid-next-week.

Here's the orginal link to the download.

http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=193844

One last note: I would prefer to send as compressed
flac files (lossless compression). The show fits on
two disks as flacs. It's three disks as audio if you
absolutely can't deal with flacs. Please tell me your
preference. Frankly, I think you'll get a better copy
as flacs.

Go here for information on flac.

I applaud Fernando for making this available by mail.

just generally I want to encourage folks to try FLACs. For one, they avoid the imperfections and errors that can occur when copying audio CDRs (digital audio extractions). And because they (losslessly) compress to half the size of their WAV file, postage can be saved; when trading FLACs, a dozen shows can fit on one DVD.

For Mac folks, I hear that Toast burns audio CDRs directly from FLACs. So do some Windows burning applications. Or one can simply decompress the FLACs to WAVs using a program like Trader's Little Helper* or FLAC Frontend**

Subject: OFFER: The Patti Smith Group - Last Official Concert Of The Original Group - Florence

One last note: I would prefer to send as compressed
flac files (lossless compression). The show fits on
two disks as flacs. It's three disks as audio if you
absolutely can't deal with flacs. Please tell me your
preference. Frankly, I think you'll get a better copy
as flacs.

Go here for information on flac.
