"This nearly three-hour madhouse comprises the last
time the original group would officially get together
for a concert. From paparazzi take-overs and audience
fistfights to an electrical blackout ending the show,
on a night when the punk movement finally ate itself -
it's a fitting end for this group, as you will see.

This ludicrously expensive 3cd set ($60 USD!) was
privately issued and is extremely rare. Inside the
booklet are the following notes. My additions are in
parentheses:

"Although the sound quality contained on these discs
may not be equal to modern standards, Strider believes
that the historical nature of these recordings begs
for release. 'Last Of The Originals'(set title d.)
documents the final official concert by the original
Patti Smith Group before Patti went into a
self-imposed exile. The band would perform only one
more concert in 1980 wihch was actually more of a
loose jam done for charity.

"The date is 9.10.79 (US dating d.). The place is
Florence, Italy. Early in the show, Patti chases the
photographers from the pit and invites the audience to
occupy the space at the very front of the stage. This
proves to be a disaster when fights break out between
the audience and security forces. Patti tries to calm
things but has to admonish rowdy audience members to
"stay off my stage". It's a losing battle and towards
the end of the 3 hour concert, the audience overruns
the stage leaving causing and electrical blackout.
"You Light Up My Life" is performed only with piano.
Efforts to restore power fail and Patti bids farewell
in Italian."
