Phil,

Here's the story as I know it. It comes from piecing together stuff from
bruce and patti books. Bruce and Patti were both in the same recording studios
back then ('77 & '78)and Jimmy Iovine, who was the recording engineer for
Bruce on Darkness On The Edge of Town and was the producer on Patti's Easter
album, got the ball rolling by approaching Bruce to see if he had a song that
would be good for Patti as he was trying to get her a "hit." Bruce offered
Because The Night, which was a work in progress at that point. He had the music
down but still working on the words. The chorus was pretty well set but the
verses were in a state of flux. Bruce, in that period, wrote the music first and
the words second.

Patti, got his demo and then re-wrote the lyrics to suit her in places. So,
they didn't actually work on it together. Her lyrics have stayed pretty
constant other than how she's played it musically over the years but Bruce's
lyrics would continue to evolve over the years but you can see the differences by
comparing his differing lyrics with hers.

Patti did write her lyrics late one night in NYC (from a Patti book) while
waiting for a phone call from Fred in Detroit that didn't come until late in
the night. Thus, her line, "love is a ring, the telephone," she specifically
said was her waiting for Fred's call. The rest of it was written along the same
lines as she was waiting for his call that night.

You can compare the lyrics from her version to those listed for Bruce's
versions on KillingFloor.com.

cool details, thanks Dave!

I can't recall where I (embarrassingly recently) read or heard this, but didn't Patti change the arrangement to Rock--hadn't Bruce written/played it slow in the sessions, but preferred Patti's very different treatment and later Bruce took to performing it as a rock song thanks to Patti?

ah, I read it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Because_the_Night

"With male-centered lyrics and a reported Latin feel, the original version of the song b a workingman's lament b wasn't finding a place on the Springsteen album. Smith took the song and recast it from a female perspective, and it was included on Easter, becoming the first single release from that album. Though it was never released on a Springsteen studio album, in concert beginning with his Darkness Tour Springsteen would often perform the song with his original lyrics, borrowing Smith's rock arrangement."

Thanks Mitch - I was there that night too. I remember being a little
pissed off that the Patti crowd gave Bruce such a big ovation when he
came out on stage - I don't think a Bruce crowd would do the same for
Patti. :)

That's always about what I had thought, that Broooce wrote the music and
chorus and Patti filled in the words. It really fits because the music
is a little more standard straight-ahead rock than Patti's usual style,
while the words of the verses are beautiful and pure Patti. For me the
music is masculine and the words are feminine.

I was at that gig the night the Fire Marshalls closed it down and thought the song was blistering. I also remember a very trance like version of Ghost Dance where patti broke into prose remarking that the ghost dance was so powerful eeven the catholics got into it - and "you know it's good when the catholics get into it!" I do also remember how crowded that place was and how warm - another comment - Patti said she had heard that the place wasn't well heated but it felt ok to her adding that " we just know how to use (may have said channel) our energy..." A magic evening. I was in the balcony with my way cool aunt and uncle (now deceased.) Bless us all! I send you all a big salute from back then to right now!

Courtesy of our good friend "fm" I today have received the CD's with the
promised FLAC files intact. For the first four (4) respondents (worldwide) I
am offering the following: one (1) Lightscribe'd DVD with all of the
original FLAC files split out to corresponding "disk" folders, including
conversions to WAV and (CD quality) MP3's for those so challenged. The deal
- you got to put up with the choice of DVD and promise to distribute to a
like number of devotees.

Fair Warning: the audio quality leaves a lot to be desired; regardless this
is an important document.

"Because the Night," came out as a 7" 45 RPM (I'm
writing in over-40, cryptic code, please forgive me)
and the very day it landed as a DJ only disc out of the
west wing of Arista, there was Germs or Johnny
Thunders show (forgot witch) at the Whiskey.

Standing out in front of club, the first Patti fan I ran
into was lens man Mike Yampolsky. I was a year
that, pretty much, still belonged to the trail-blazing,
back-alley rebels that Patti helped inspire a year or
two back.

We knew the winds were changing, B52s, GoGos,
Talking Heads, London knife-edge getting a polish
to post-punk-pop-edge.... BUT everyone was walking
a fine line. It was an exciting completely unpredictable
age in outcast rock music. Punk bursting out all over
the place, the seeds of *dark beauty* we still have today
were being sown by Joy Division, Siouxie, Christian
Death (to name a small sampling), a few sparks of what
would become tasteful, Euro original sounding techno dance
hall music was finishing off roller skate, android clone,
endless hypo-disco tape loops with one last bullet
to the disco ball head.

It was the Late Nineteen Seventies and with all that had
passed before it, I was ready to hear Patti blow the lid
off the Planet Earth. That night. with "Because the Night"
only a few hours off our turn tables and bouncing around in
our heads as we looked for a way to grab hold of it, Mike
and I just looked at each other blankly, "Did you hear Patti's
new 45?" he asked. "Yep," I sighed in return. Mike: "I'm
scared... really scared."

And so the first day of the great division of Patti fans began.
In light of the Clash and other intensities of the time, the
single was a heart-shaped, sweet lolly pop on a stick.

The album came out. I had already heard better live versions
of most of the songs, but the title track stole the very center
on my heart. It took me to the spiritual company of poets I
loved... and it echo 'd her magical performance of it at CBGBs
in front of small crowd while she still had her neck brace.

She ended Easter with the words, "I want you to wake up...
and I want it now... but not at the expense of forgetting a
dream." I'll never forget those words.

Even though "Because the Night" was my least favorite slice
from her, it opened the door to the freedom on not having
to be the "god mother of punk" anymore. And that lead to
a kaleidoscope of Patti expressions. Some to love - some
to hate. Some have struck chords that we're still learning.
Patti tapped into my dreams and left words that gave me
hope. In light of that, everything else is just a tune to tap
your foot to.

Paul

Thank you! If you can read through and excuse
the typos... many, many typos, I guess I was
able to communicate. I must learn lesson #1 in
babel 101: Always read what you wrote before
you hit the send button.

Thanks again,

Paul

PS. Regardless of my opinion, Because

I hope it doesn't annoy anyone that I forward this message. Ferron is a really good singer who I think some Patti fans would like. She has a new CD and a tour - see below for info.

I'm guessing it is this - reported on the Eternal Cafe on 20 April...

You can listen to the new song that Patti Smith has written for
Augusten Burroughs' audiobook of A Wolf at the Table here:

http://augusten.com/

The website says: "Patti Smith and daughter Jesse Smith collaborated
with songwriter Michael Campbell in their response to A Wolf at the
Table. The song, The Only Time, is an effort to capture the mood of
the memoir by Augusten Burroughs, while maintaining a hopeful
undercurrent."

Kind regards

Andrew

Well, Mitch.............I am ALWAYS TOTALLY annoyed by ANYTHING you send.
You know I think its just a shame that someone who has been on here for
longer than I have would post such a thing!
...............................................

OK OK I have to STOP!!!!!!!!!! I can't DO it anymore!!! I'M KIDDING!!!! :-D
THANKYOU for posting something Pattifans MAY like--I'm sort of getting tired
of the same ol same ol--"anybody have..." & "what did Patti mean when she
said..."!! Thankyou for this--as soon as my son gives me the headphones for
the computer or gets some more I'll ck it out! She sounds like a fresh young
thang doin her fresh young stuff--and that's fine with me! Patti has sprung
quite a few admiring offshoots and if we disdain them just because they 'are
just trying to sound like Patti' (some of them are, and some are good--some
of them are and some are horrid!) Influences are influences, and ya just
can't shake em. Now when someone pretends they ARE Patti Smith, well then we
got a problem!

I think we need some fresh meat, and I'm always willing to listen to new
sounds. Especially intelligent ones. And as YOU are an intelligent man, I
figure Ferron probably has some greatness!

Thanks for the tip! :-D

Ferron's show here in Santa Cruz about 2 months back was an absolutely
stunning performance, full of humor, heartbreakingly great songs, and
extremely fine musicianship. Go see her if you have a chance.

One point to make, though: Ferron is no fresh young thang. She's been doing
this for a long, long time. She actually came up from the women's music
scene back in the 70s. What I consider to be her best album, Testimony, was
released in 1980.

But don't let that stop you--Ferron has always been good; she has seasoned
into being great!

Yes, Ferron is by all means from the classic old school,
"women's music" planet which sometimes a difficult
surface for men to land on. But a song of her's back
in the 80s struck my heart in such a positive way that
I persuaded that genera at the record shop (then morphing
into CD stores) and found a test pressing of Horses
(a rare, all blank vinyl with a cover of the Maplethorpe
photo printed on a 12x24 sheet of paper - the card
board jackets hadn't been made yet) on which some-
one at Arista hand wrote "women's music" on it.

I found that an awkward statement for Patti's music.
Yes, it had a strong appeal for women, but the last
thing I could imagine her doing back in '75 is standing
around in a big women-only circle in Colorado, Northern
California, Mass., Upstate NY or some other Coombya
campfire stronghold with Holly Far (oops, that's Nea...
oh, you who) in a great, swilling, swaying estrogen sing-
along.

I don't think that after Radio Ethiopia that the person
who refaced that test pressing (not realizing it's value
then) would have thought twice before pegging Patti
has "Women's music." In this decade we have so many
tags for so many sub-generas it makes categorizing,
especially if you're getting paid for it as part of your
days duties, a very difficult job to do so accurately.

So, what kind of music does Patti make? Our great
lady, herself would put her discs in the "Rock 'n Roll"
section along with the Stones, Dylan and the Doors and
I would do the same. But she has covered so much ground.
The cut Radio Ethiopia is like improvised late era Coletrane
in a way and a live acidic Hawkwind space journey in
another.

'O Patti, Patti, Patti.... I will love you till I die, but I must
say, if weren't for Lenny and a handful of other friends
and family, you would have flown off to Neptune and
perhaps never come back. Who are you? What are you?
How did you learn to spread your wings so wide?

Paul Perner

Subject: Because The Night - Origin Explained - By Patti Herself!

To those who recently wondered about the origin of Because The Night and what
did Bruce create and what did Patti Smith create, here's what I sent
recently to a person who requested the same on a babelogue post but still,
there
were questions - like prove it! So, following all the detail below is where
you
can HEAR Patti tell the story herself, exactly as relayed originally by me
but recapped below:
-----------------------
Here's the story as I know it. It comes from piecing together stuff from
Bruce and Patti books. Bruce and Patti were both in the same recording studios
back then ('77 & '78) and Jimmy Iovine, who was the recording engineer for
Bruce on Darkness On The Edge of Town and was the producer on Patti's Easter
album, got the ball rolling by approaching Bruce to see if he had a song that
would be good for Patti as he was trying to get her a "hit." [That bit about
Iovine approaching Bruce for a Patti hit comes from a radio interview I have
from Jimmy Iovine, called "Rock Years '78" that was played in D.C. around New
Year's in 1980 where tells the story.]
Bruce offered Because The Night, which was a work in progress at that point.
He had the music down but was still working on the words. The chorus was
pretty well set but the verses were in a state of flux. Bruce, in that period,
wrote the music first and the words second.
Patti, got his demo and then re-wrote most of the lyrics to suit her in
places. So, they didn't actually work on it together. Her lyrics have stayed
pretty constant over the years other than how she's played it musically, which
has had different styles. However, Bruce's lyrics would continue to evolve
over
the years but you can see the differences by comparing his differing lyrics
with hers. Some lines between the two are the same. But you can clearly tell,
if you know Pattibs writing style at all, what lines are hers. To this
date,
Brucebs lyrics for this song have fluctuated greatly. Thus, I donbt even
know what they are anymore when I sing it in concert at his shows nor at
Pattibs
shows, but somehow it never seems to cause a problem. What a remarkable
song.
Patti did write her lyrics late one night in NYC (from a Patti book) while
waiting for a phone call from Fred in Detroit that didn't come until late in
the night. Thus, her line, "love is a ring, the telephone," she specifically
said was her waiting for Fred's call. The rest of it was written along the
same lines as she was waiting for his call that night.
You can compare the lyrics from her version to those listed for Bruce's
versions on KillingFloor.com at http://www.brucespringsteen.it/Brucex.htm
----------------------------
Further, at Michael Stipe's suggestion, the version they did of BTN on the
Vote For Change Tour was mostly with Patti's lyrics. Michael does her first
verse and Bruce does most of her second verse which begins:
Have I doubt, when Ibm alone,
Love is a ring, the telephone,
Love is an angel, disguised as lust,
Here in our bed until the morning comes
As Michael Stipe relayed at the Cleveland VFC show before doing Final Straw,
a song played first for Patti to which when Michael didnbt know what to
call
it, Patti suggested the title come from the phrase in a line of the song, so
he named it Final Straw, that Patti had called him that day and thanked him
for something he did at the Philly VFC show, wished them luck, and, in typical
Patti fashion, wanted to remind him that that day was Gandhibs birthday.
Despite Patti's stamp on the VFC tour with doing mostly her version of BTN,
and also doing her song, People Have The Power as the next to last group
finale at each of Bruce's VFC shows, Patti and Bruce did not reprise doing
Because The Night on that tour nor have they ever done it together since the
1st
and only time at CBGBs, on 11/30/77, when Bruce showed up for Patti's show and
they did Because The Night. I never checked to see whose lyrics they did that
night.
Well, inquiring minds wanted even more information than the above about
Because The Night's origins and the role each played, so here it is, in
Patti's
own words that totally equals what I said above.
It's contained in Part 1 of a radio interview on The Globe, FM 94.7 in the
D.C. area. The interview was conducted Cerphe, a longtime area DJ, who goes
back to WHFS and a radio interview he did with Bruce on 6/2/73 as detailed on
Brucebase:
02/06/73 - RADIO STATION WHFS-FM, BETHESDA, MD
INTERVIEW - SATIN DOLL / CIRCUS SONG / NEW YORK SONG / GROWIN' UP / MARY
QUEEN OF ARKANSAS
In-station interview conducted by Donald bCerpheb Colwell (a DJ who was
one
of Brucebs biggest early supporters) - plus Brucebs 3rd acoustic radio
performance. The above-mentioned 5-song setlist is believed to be the complete
show. The master tape is not circulating but a fan had the foresight to tape
the
40-minute show from the radio although, unfortunately, the result seems to
have been only fair sound quality. Two of the tracks, bNew York Songb and
b
Mary Queen Of Arkansasb can be found as tracks 9 and 10 the CD bRADIO
WAVESb
(Great Dane). The entire audio is available on the custom made CDR boot b
STRICTLY PROHIBITEDb. This is Brucebs last known in-station musical
performance
until 09/03/74.
Cerphe also, by voice, is the one who intro Bruce on the Largo 8/15/78 DVD
and visually on the Largo 11/23/80 DVD. He had a long blonde ponytail then.
Well, just today on Cerphe's page of The Globe's website at
http://www.947theglobe.com/pages/264754.php
I found the following 2 part interview Cerphe did with Patti Smith in the
studio on 4/26/08, the day of her D.C. Film Fest premiere that night at the
Lincoln Theatre of the Sundance award winning documentary film on her by
Steven
Sebring, "Dream Of Life."
At about 12:30 of Part 1, Patti tells the story of how Because The Night
happened and "straight from the horse's mouth" as she says. That part runs
for
about 2 minutes. She even mentions, verbatim, the "Love is a ring, the
telephone" line as coming to her while waiting for Fred's phone call so many
hours
that night,"
Both parts total about 23 1/2 minutes. She also does a live version of Wing
with her son Jackson on guitar. The interview can be downloaded as MP3s from
the site so grab 'em kiddies!
Thanks Patti!bWe can turn the earthbs revolutionb

Thank you. That hits very nail in the pail and definitely
shuts me and my criticisms about "Because the Night" up
for the rest of my natural life.

Some of the reaction to it was that in that year, if you
flew the punk flag, your heroes weren't supposed to have
commercial hits. B the N was a good, solid, beautiful song
and the Patti wagon needed a new wheel to keep things
rolling after Radio Ethiopia (I speak purely from my own
conjectures) didn't fly out of the bins.... even though it's
an artistic gem and one of my all time faves.

I find it interesting that Bruce created the melody
without words first.

Paul
